2025 Washington Commanders- All Things Defense

With the massively lopsided losses, I'm kinda surprised we haven't gone with the "F-it, send the house" mentality. If we aren't going to ever make Detroit punt, why not blitz the **** out of them repeatedly.

If you just hit on a 10 yd sack, you at least give the defense a chance to make a stop.

Again, I think the defense is going to turn over quite a bit.

Some of it is expiring one year contracts for 30 plus year old guys that probably going to retire.

The other is moving on from guys like Lattimore and Jones whose bodies have simply broken down due to the wear and tear of an NFL career and are no longer the players they were 3 or 4 years ago.

To me 2026 is a put up or shut up season for Johnny Newton and Quan Martin. Are these guys legit NFL defenders and part of the solution here or are they part of the problem?

We have some younger guys in Owens, Aho, and high pick like Trey Amos that look to be players that can grow and become real contributors here.

Whitt to me is not a great coordinator by any stretch. But he has not been given elite or even solid talent across the board to work with either.

One thing I would criticize is the 2 linebacker standard set. It almost guarantees that Washington in its base defense is outmanned at the line of scrimmage and at a disadvantage stopping the run.

Most teams go to a 2 linebacker set in long yardage passing downs but not as a regular look.

As I mentioned in another thread - I think we need more DAWGS on this team. More players that are aggressive on the field and show visible fight.

Outside of Tunsil and a few others I see chirping away during games and pushing guys, we have a LOT of quiet players that just go on the field and come off and you barely notice them.

I saw Tunsil talking to Conerly Jr. on the sideline a couple of weeks ago.

Amusing - he took Conerly away from the coach and talked to him alone.

Evidently the coaches here are not looked to for leadership.

If I'm a GM worth my salt, Quan Martin is not guaranteed a starting position next year or, heck, even a roster spot. I'm absolutely pursuing an upgrade at FS.

I feel like we should have a separate thread about who we want to be our next DC.

Maybe. It's not really clear though who is getting fired quite yet. Gannon feels like the the obvious one but my #1 candidate would be Ullbrich if the Falcons surprise us and fire Raheem. Ullbrich is fielding a top 10 defense based on DVOA without a single superstar. I may be wrong but I believe Jessie Bates is his only former All Pro

This is a real indictment of Peters first to give the team such a slight draft of talent on defense but also of Dan Quinn, whose had a 30 year career of coaching on that side of the ball.

Last year the OFFENSE took this team to the playoffs and NFC title game and the defense came along for the ride.

This year they fell off the truck completely.

For the people wanting Quinn to step in…we aren’t going to improve drastically if Quinn calls the defensive plays, either imo. Better? Probably, he’s been good before. But I don’t think he’s some special schemer or playcaller, he’s someone who I think is likely a better HC than DC, if he has good coordinators under him. I don’t think he’s secretly retaining all the cures to our ills in his mind right now. Our gameplan and defensive decision-making has his input already, he’s just not literally calling the plays.

Whitt needs to go, and maybe Quinn needs a stretch of the season calling the plays again to really get in tune with how much the defensive personnel sucks going into the offseason, but Quinn is not some un-utilized cure-all to our defensive issues now or in the future. He literally sold himself as the HC candidate who had learned the most from his past mistakes—those mistakes being calling the plays and dividing his attention. He will sink or swim as a CEO style HC because that’s what he sold to AP. Him taking over play calling would just be a temporary thing if Whitt has lost so much respect with the players that you just can’t have him in the building anymore. Outcomes won’t improve much.

Schwartz would be legit. He is a big personality however. It'll be interesting to see if DQ has the cojones to hire him if he is indeed the best candidate

Naa, it'll be like when Wade Phillips was available but they hired Dingleberry instead.

I don’t know about that, Quinn is a collaborator and given his bond with AP, I don’t think he fears bringing in a bigger personality as a coordinator. The guy wants to win, he just doesn’t know how right now. I don’t think he’s fragile and afraid of strong voices in the room. He wants to be a CEO HC, it’s in his best interests to have coordinators that bring their own ideas and strong opinions to the mix

If that's the case it would be a huge upgrade, would take a load off DQ's mind so he could go back to playing HC and bring credibility to the staff, especially DQ showing he can cut a friend if they deserve it...which is currently where we sit

Yeah, even as someone who isn’t sold on Quinn long term, I don’t think he’s a fragile dude that needs to play politics.

I don’t think he hires an OC in Kliff, and other assistants with head coach/coordinator experience, if he’s a guy worried about bench strength taking him out.

I think he made a mistake and miscalculation in hiring his buddy to be DC. I don’t think he realized just how much he set Whitt up to fail with a talent deficient roster, and never thought about the fact that it might not work out - and he’d have to fire him.
