2025 Washington Commanders- All Things Defense

At least DQ pulled the trigger on a move, he had to make some sort of a change whetheer he received pressure from above him or not.

I think its big time. I think it assures Whitt isn't running the defense next year. I wasn't sure if he'd pull the trigger this season.

Whether it helps or not this season in a big way, i don't know. But I like the big picture of it...

A. Almost assures Whitt isn't running the defense next year.

B. It will give Quinn I think a bigger window into this unit and as for what they need to do this offseason.

Quinn helped get our franchise QB injured again and he has employed a terrible defense and he's supposed to be known as a defense guy. I won't be sad to see him leave either. 28-3..never forget.
Firing a coach coming off an NFC Title game appearance?

Dan Snyder still lives here.

I agree his window should get him to next year. If he didn't make a move his job would have been on the line.

I don't expect great changer right away due to thee extent of injuries but he did man up

What do you think Quinn does all week, then? My understanding was that he still sits in on these meetings and has his input on the defensive gameplan—and also as much as he can with Kliff and the offensive game plan. I agree that he’s not running these meetings, his pitch to AP was that he would succeed as a CEO HC who has his hands on every part of the operation in a managerial role. To me that would include offering his knowledge and expertise on both sides of the ball as often as possible, without having to actually grind tape into the early hours of the morning and mastermind either side of the ball himself, or call the plays himself on gameday. But having input on the macro direction of the game plan and observing what the assistant coaches are showing the players in practice and preaching in positional meeting rooms?? That’s gotta be the majority of his job, right?

The idea that he’s not involved in the X’s and O’s at all until he demoted Whitt and took over this week? That seems crazy, what the hell does Quinn do when everyone spends all week in meetings then? I’m seriously asking

Quinn talked about this a lot when he started this job. According to him, he doesn't do X's and O's, he think it would make him a bad head coach. there is so much on his plate running the whole team that he doesn't have time to delve into game planning.

What am i guessing he's been doing on the defensive front? Watching practice, talking to Whitt, Whitt explaining what he's doing and why, hearing the calls when they come in. There was a time where I thought isn't that most of everyhing? But lol after reading Arians book, i see that as like 20% of the drill if that.

According to him, the battle between offensive coodinator and defensive coordinator are spending late nights dissecting each others unit and especially dissecting each others QB. I make X move, they make Y. When I go to this formation, this is how they react. It's about the actual game planning.

So Quinn hearing from Whitt about what he plans to do and why would demand he take it on a leap of faith. Because taking Quinn at his word, he was unikely shrugging off many of his HC duties during the season, and saying to Whitt, you know what i am going to stay up to midnight and study film with you and game plan this sucker together.

I was listening to Keim's podcast last night and he was going over having a convo with a defensive guy (assuming from another team) who described some of the process and related it to Whitt. They said watching the Lions game and if I heard him right referring to other games too -- this defense overreacts to formation, the QB audibles out of it, the defense in turn doesn't react to the offenses audible and are stuck in a bad defense for the given play again and again and again. They cited among examples Goff being in a passing formation, the defense goes cover 2, Goff's audibles to a run, and Gibbs is off to the races.

So its the opponent shows a chess move. The defense reacts hard to it. the opponent reacts to the defenses overreaction. And the defense is in the worst possible set up to stop the play.

Also they talked about this team struggiling with run fits and the passing formations playing off of it. And they go thats something driven by preperation that you run in practice to death. On that one could Quinn be part of the problem? Maybe. But at least in the one practice I watched Quinn wasn't just with the defense. Whitt ran his own unit.

If there is some blame pie directed at Quinn for this is perhaps he's too hands off the unit. He made should a big deal of noting wanting to be part of X's and O's especially taking this job that it felt a bit over the top where dude running defense is you thing, you should be more involved.

Yeah am with you on that. I got no worry about it either. Keim who is most in the know typically said Quinn is coming back.

I think this regime made mistakes. I might have been the most aggressive poster here as to making the point as to what and why. But I also thought their would be some upside to it over the long term, too. Same point with Peters for me. And if anyone should be on the hotseat, maybe its Peters but for him too i am giving him another year.

A. With Quinn didn't love the light camp. The light preseason. And the general it felt like cockiness and in turn lack of edge coming into the season -- this is a mild point from me, it was low key cockiness bt it felt that way to me. Didn't love his dismissive comment about September football. If you judge things by the Packers coaching stiff, Quinns lack of push during camp is likely a reason of why so many injuries. And the key for me is having his pal running defense. And yeah I didn't like him keeping Daniels in that game -- that move ironically is what guaranteed a lost season.

B. Peters. Left two holes so wide open for the team to implode and it did. But was cocky IMO and let it play out. The reason why its a dumpster fire right now is almost 100% on him.

But...

A. Quinn is a good motivator and works his ass off. Also, he's not by reputation a stick in the mud type of dude. He learns from his mistakes. Players like him. He's a good coach IMO. And I'd bet hard that all of this is eating him up. Compare to Rivera, who doesn't change and doesn't have the rep of being a hard worker -- to me its night and day.

B. Peters also with a reputation of working his ass off and learns from his mistakes. I don't think his mistakes will be loss on him. I do like how he's turned a crap O line into a good one. I have no doubt he's going to attack WR and edge in particular hard versus the half ass job he did in both spots last year.

I am letting Rocky 3 evolve until the rematch with Mr. T at the end of the movie. I felt and say it felt like early Rock 3 this summer before it fell apart. I didn't think it woild be this bad but I was concerned about some early bumps. And yeah the injuries and killer hard schedule compounded the problems in a big way.

It's weird he took it on now. No Payne. No Amos. So a weaker unit than what Whitt had. And he has to do it with the team in Madrid for one week.

I am glad he did it but if I were him, I'd have done it in the bye week where you got more time to study this and prepare.

How did Kliff not work Whitt through his struggles through these tactical sit downs? I mean really, we are supposed to have some sort of an all star coaching staff, they all should have been working together and finding answers to issues. Really most professional analysts or even us posters have pointed out many of the seen issues but there was often no real attempt at an answer or a half-ass attempt and then they fell back to thee same old same old. Sorry, frustration venting this morning

Totally agree and that's when it initially sounded like he'd make the move . He must have been feeling pressure from all around or feeling his bud Whitt taking shots from everywhere and just trying to take thee load off him. If it were for the latter, it is a mistake but feels DQesque.

I am guessing Kliff's got plenty of his own things on his plate to deal with Whitt and that unit. Also, it seems clear that Whitt was trying to reasure the other coaches with each week until Quinn had enough of it.

Remember Whitt

A. Eye discipline is the problem
B. Hero ball
C. We just need to take the ball away
D. We need to simplify
E. Let me do this on the sidelines and help communications

You hire someone to run a unit, its natural to trust their problem solving until you don't. Quinn now finally doesn't.

I am not saying whomever Keim talked to is on the money for sure but man does it feel true. My two takeaways from it is.

A. Offenses are coaches to oversell something in formation, Whitt takes the bait right away, then they do the opposite and the defense is in the worst spot to stop it. So its the equivalent of a CB always falling for the double move from a WR, always taking the bait.

B. they don't practice hard run fits for the D line along with the secondary playing off of it. That's something you reinforce over and over and over untl it's rote, and the assumption is Whitt doesn't do so.

And if anyone should be on the hotseat, maybe its Peters but for him too i am giving him another year.
Peters gets to see his contract to the end for me. I don't now how you'd pass judgement on a GM who inherited one of the worst rosters in the league in just 3 seasons. Especially when you can't judge a draft class after one season.

It sucks being the doormat of the league....again. But you have to give a GM a chance to establish a vision.

I think that after the Lions game something had to change. That was unacceptable and downright embarrassing

Honestly, this makes Whitt sound like an idiot. Is it possible he could be this ignorant after all his years in football? It doesn't feel like he should be a coach of any kind

Considering how loyal he is to his coaches. I am guesing 1 of 2 things.

1. Peters pressured him to do it. The whole defense collapse you can argue is Peters versus Whitt as to the blame game. If Whitt is making the most of the talent Peters gave him than it makes Peters look bad and vice versa. Personally I think both did a bad job with the unit but I have much more faith that Peters will fix his mistakes than Whitt. Peters did his bargain basement FA shopping, and he excels at it mostly. But he needs to have more balls and sign marquee more expensive FAs like a Josh Sweat type. But I think he will.

2. Quinn finally got fed up. Whitt as I mentioned seems to have a new theme for his excuses every week. Eventually it had to feel comical even to him.

3. Even with the depleted talent. And I agree with Conn they might get boatraced even against the Dolphins. Quinn's game planning this should be much different than Whitt game planning -- based on the little I know from Arians book and adding some of Keim's podcast insight to this.

What I think will happen? Not much of a difference Sunday. this is too much, too fast. and i gather between the HC duties and being in Madrid this isn't the ideal time to do this. But I do think some improvement will come post bye week.

I see it in my business some. I am not in sports but there is a strategic component to my job. Oversell your strategy -- get the opponent to react to it -- and then go the opposite direction and get your opponent flat footed.

Its the Art of War from Sun Tzu 101.

And again this was just one person's opinion who talked to Keim by boy did what they say to him resonate to me listenting to it.

And yeah if true, I don't think it makes Whitt an idiot. but it doesn't make him a chess player in this league. And i think that's one of the key differences between actually running a unit versus being a position coach.

And it goes back to Arians point about game planning for things. If you see that formations create overreactions from the defensive coordinator, you are going to game out plays to exploit it. If we show them this look. they go cover 2. We then run J. Gibbs up the gut for 20 yards.

So if you get your QB prepped to audible and your offense is trained to start in one formation, but end up in a different formation -- you re going to have Whitt on his heels at least according to one observor.

Good posts!
It seems Whitt has been on his heels to start a majority of the games, especially over the past month.

Even as a position coach, how does he survive lol this time not understanding the OC is jobbing you by doing thee same thing repetitively to kill you.

I feel like Whittts coaching appears, baffled. How has he survived in his job for this long? I go back to his intense first presser and every fell for his enthusiasm but that turns to just BS after a while. He thrived on having a good offense last year and Owes JD and Kliff some of last years paychecks....again this is venting Tuesday morning lol

I watch all the teams press avails every week. All season I have heard Joe Whitt take the responsibility for his unit’s poor performances but then point out the failings du jour of the players. If I was a player, he would at least be getting a side-eye from me. He’s too much of a pro but I’d love to hear Bobby Wagner’s thoughts when the season is thankfully over.

I asked a few weeks back how all of the vet leaders aren't calling these defensive shortfalls out. THey should be way more frustrated than anyone as they get trounced over and over.

I am going to try to change topics.
I read that Von Miller wants to return next year.
Is it just me or has Jacob Martin looked better than Von Miller?

Must be nice.

I certainly hope not. Von isn’t part of the problem but he isn’t part of the solution either.
