2025 Washington Commanders- All Things Defense

I was surprised to see PFF graded Lattimore out as elite against the Bears, including no receptions on 38 coverage snaps. Probably too much to hope it signifies turning a corner for him in Washington, but still nice.

I wonder how many CBs get graded as elite against Caleb Williams.
 
It just seemed like our defensive calls are just whatever they are. It doesn’t feel like Whitt is battling the OC by predicting the D to call against what they call. Or we just suck that bad.

There is a little suck factor, along with a lack of elite talent and good depth.

Whitt seems to go into games with a game plan and has a hard time adjusting early as needed based. I don't think there much predicting in Whitts game, he has more of a slow reactionary game.

I made the connection between Norv and Whitt earlier this week because of something Whitt says at his press conference. The more I think about it the more I think it has merit. Both are scheme guys. If they get the personnel to fit the scheme they're good coordinators, but if they have to go to plan B... they have no plan B because "What they do works."

Over the last two years, Whitt hasn't had the personnel to play aggressive man and yet that's been the plan. Right now, he is calling more zone, but it's clear they don't know how to scheme up a zone that either confuses or pressures a QB. It's more of a bend but don't break/almost prevent zone with a pass rush that never arrives.

Yup and your offense must score a ton and works a hell of a lot better with a lead if you are playing a bend but don't break D....I hate the prevent. I believe in pressure early and often.

This season we’re playing about 70/30 zone/man. Last season we also played a ton of zone, closer to 65/35 it looks like (which is still fairly high for the NFL, which is a zone league in a massive way)

So I’m not sure our “plan” heading into the season was to be a heavy man team, but I agree that either way we don’t have the personnel for it. Not that we really have the personnel for anything in particular on that side of the ball, never mind being aggressive with it.
 
Well, whatever the plan is... it hasn't worked two years in a row :(

Zone coverage is usually DOA without a pass rush. If you aren't pressuring the QB into rushing throws, or throwing from odd angles, all they are having to do is sit back and wait for a WR to run into a soft coverage area of the field.
 
Before the season started, our secondary was supposed to be an area of strength. It went to hell fast.

I personally was unhappy with St Juste for his PIs, but I also always wondered what on Earth they were teaching him as coaches; I also noticed Noah I and others with the same odd inability or awareness to turn the head around.
I see a lot of the same mannerisms now across the board from all of our DBs. I don't know. It feels like the coaching is way off in that group.
 
Watching this Detroit defense doing a real good job on Baker and TB offense......and that's with their secondary decimated by injuries.

Kelvin Sheppard has taken that D to another level. We unfortunately don’t really have a young up and comer like that to hand playcalling duties to. Was supposed to be Simmons but his unit is trash
