So with the start of real Free Agency, I figured we might want to track what we think the starting lineup looks like. There will be holes to start with, where the cupboard is bare, which will get filled with additional signings and, late on, draft picks. This is not a depth chart.

Of course, there could be changes at ANY of the position groupings, but the one where I really doubt we come back with 4 guys that are holdovers is the secondary.

Martin showed signs of improvement over the course of the season last year but Forbes to me was only out there because of his draft position and all of the injuries the team suffered in the backfield.

At safety, I think with all of the veterans on the market we almost have to grab one to provide some leadership in the secondary for 2024.

Gotta add Jeudy as one of the WRs now

I love the list!

Brissett to the Pats

Great work, Neophyte. The team kept you up late updating the roster chart I see. I like the Allegretti signing. He is another capable interior OL player that we were able to sign at an affordable rate. I suppose starting in some high stakes playoff games and the Super Bowl, and helping KC not miss a beat makes up some for a lack of overall starting experience (13 games). Overall, we spent 43M for two well regarded players on the interior by all accounts, one of which has been named to a Pro Bowl before. Carolina spent 153M between Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis alone. I would say we got good bang for our buck. That all said, given that Allegretti is healing from injury and has never had to stand up to a full season of work, I still want to draft an IOL somewhere in the draft as insurance.

If all the contracts max out, Washington spent 147m on Luvu, Armstrong, Biadasz, Allegretti, Ekeler, Ertz, and McManus.

The NYG spent 141m on Brian Burns.

The Giants move for Burns and the money given out along with the Hunt contract in Carolina will be ones those teams end up regretting 2 or 3 years from now.

It seems as if the Giants are in panic mode signing an entire offensive line, running back and now defense to surround a very questionable passer in Daniel Jones in a bid to legitimize the quarterback in 2024.

I think ultimately the Giants will realize Jones is overpaid and they will have to cut bait at some point down the road and admit their mistake by having a fire sale on these same players.

I penciled Ferrell in as the starter at RDE but I'm not convinced that is the case. This one is a wait-and-see, I think.

I think he will compete for the job. He may be in a job share.

Recall that Quinn likes to rotate ends in the rush game, so there may be 3-4 guys that come in and out based on the down and distance.

Bobby Wagner is old as dirt for a LB, but his attitude and work ethic could really help mold our corp into something good.

Agreed but after listening to the guys on the fan yesterday I was reminded he’s only one year older then Fletcher when he came and we got 6 yrs out of him so I’m feeling a little more excited about this move . On top of it it’s only a one year deal still leaving us options

Wagner is a tackling machine. I envision the team using him on early downs vs. the run much as the team used Matt Millen in 1991. Short yardage and goal line as well.

Wagner is OK in short coverage, he's just lost the speed to be 25 yards down field covering George Kittle or a dynamic back like Barkley.

Let's face it, Washington's defense was poor in tackling near the line of scrimmage, allowing plays that should have gained 3-4 yards to turn into 20-30 chunk plays.

Cody Barton and Khaleke Hudson had no heft and were easily blocked.

Jamin Davis at this point appears set to become a pass rushing linebacker. I think after watching the film, Washington's coaches have put Davis in the same category as LaVar Arrington, a physical freak talent whose ability to play disciplined assignments and coverages is questionable.

There are a number of very good rush linebackers around the NFL that can't cover and have questionable overall football IQ, but they have that one skill and it is a valuable one if you can cover in other areas of our defense for his deficiencies.

Anyone who watched Richie Petitbon's defenses in the past can recognize some of the things Quinn is setting the team up to do in 2024 as the club builds better overall talent over the next 2-3 drafts.

Targeted situation substitution can help fill gaps and maximize the talents of the players on the roster.

Neophyte,
Thank you for actively updating this lineup - definitely not an easy task with all the change over the last several days.

I suppose if we had to identify needs as we currently stand, they might be (in no particular order):

a) starting QB
b) starting LT
c) RT to push or oust Wylie
d) TE to develop behind Ertz that can turn into a legitimate starter
e) WR3
f) rotational DT to supplant Mathis/Ridgeway
g) depth LB to groom
h) CB to push Forbes on the outside for playing time
i) IOL to push Allegretti and act as insurance

What are we missing?

The way I see it, I think Peters might be setting us up to go bananas on the offensive side of the ball in the draft, especially since we have reportedly been sniffing around the CB market in FA.

Push Forbes? I think he was playing late last year because of injuries and his draft position.

Ain’t no passes for this stick man in 2024 😎

I think CB is our biggest deficit right after OT. I like St-Juste with better coaching, but betting Forbes is a total bust. We may draft 2 CBs.

I think we still need to acquire a veteran corner. We really don't have an anchor in the secondary right now. A lot of younger guys that need mentoring.

If a Bobby Wagner type veteran becomes available at some point we should be looking at signing.

As it stands today, after the first wave of Free Agency but before the draft, we have 11 new starters out of 26 positions (regular 22 plus 4 specialists).

You have to think that with 3 picks in the Top 40 of this draft, we will get a couple more.
