2024 Injuries (*UPDATE: Jon Allen likely gone for season*)

Yeah, the cold objective view acknowledges the D wasn't getting it done with Allen. The run D was porous and the pass rush inconsistent at best. I'll admit I hoped we might trade him a few weeks ago. So, I don't know how much worse we will be without him. He has been a great player for us during several difficult years. The D did seem like it had figured something out in Arizona and Cleveland. Would be nice if it did and Allen could have been a part of the renaissance. I suppose it's still possible next year as this year is still a building one though I suspect it's a longshot he makes next year's roster.

Unless he restructures his 17 mil next season (since there is no guarantees) to lower the cap hit he wont be sure on the team

At 31 I don't see Allen coming back next season.

We need to get Newton going and get him reps. We need to see Phidarian Mathis come out and stop the run on the early downs, a role he seems better suited for than being in on third down as a guy who rushes the passer.

This is one reason I didn't want to give Ridgeway away. He was strong against the run, which is not the forte of the defensive line overall, and gave 110% consistent effort, which has been an issue with this group as well.

when we traded him I felt they moved the wrong guy
but Ill be happy if that's the worst move they make this season

what's strange to me is how desperate the team seemed to be rid of Ridgeway.

we carried other players that we know are borderline NFL players onto the regular roster to start the season.

Ridgeway is definitely better than that.

One question I have is where is Jamin Davis?

When you look at edge rushers it appears Baptiste, our #7 pick, has moved ahead of him on the depth chart.

i dont think they were 'desperate' to get rid of him, it likely just came down to him and Mathis, and he garnered an actual return where Mathis likely wouldn't have. The room got full quick.

Allen
Payne
Mathis
Newton
Ridgeway

Ridgeway was just the odd man out that had some trade value. Ridgeway hasn't exactly been lighting it up in NO either. In fairness I havne't watched every snap of their games, maybe he has been lights out?

He's a road grader that helps against the run. He's not going to show up on the stat sheet like the pass rushers do.

But he's a legit 320-325 and right now you were looking at Jonathan Allen at 301 and Newton at 295 as part of the DT rotation.

That's a bit light for the NFL given the size of guards in the league.

ICYMI

If you missed Chris' post in the Roster Moves thread, Javonte Jean-Bapstiste has now been placed on IR.

that's a shame. we now have both Jordan Magee and Baptiste on the IR from our 2024 draft class.

Although Baptiste already looks better despite his raw skills than Jamin Davis in live action.

Magee was removed from IR and returned to practice if i'm not mistaken.

He hasn't produced.. yet, but at least he's on track to return... fingers crossed.

Magee has been out of action for quite awhile. As a rookie we may be looking at the second half of the season before he makes an impact.

He did have a good offseason and looked much better than a #5 pick.
