Why do division winners automatically get the top 4 seeds even if their record is subpar compared to wild card teams? Why not give the division winners a guaranteed spot, but HFA should go to the team wiith the

I never used to feel that way but more and more my opinion is starting to shift.

It's possible that this year we could have the 3 and 4 seeds with 9 wins and the 5, 6 and 7 seeds could have 14, 13 and 12 wins.

That would be crazy!

I kind of like our chances of earning the 6th seed with Green Bay facing Minnesota this week.

But…

I’m nervous about our chances of making the playoffs. If we don’t beat Atlanta, we likely need to win against Dallas, in Dallas, with them knowing they have a chance to knock us out and absolutely nothing to lose.

They definitely need a change… been in need of a change… several years ago the Seahawks hosted a home playoff game and actually won when they were like 2 or 3 games under .500 but because they won a very weak division… once playoffs start a reseeding needs to be done…. It happened to us several years ago during Covid season… we hosted the Bucs at home but they had a better record… that needs to change

It would be nice knowing we're already in, before kickoff.

If I did the math correctly all we need for the 6th seed is to win out and Green Bay lose one of the next 2 games. The best they can do is tie us on common opponents. We would then go to the next tie breaker conference record. We would have a better conference record.

Will Tampa send us gifts for eliminating Atlanta? Will we send Minnesota gifts for knocking Green Bay from the 6 seed?

I dunno. I'm honestly in two minds on this.
- If you win your division, that's a big deal and you should be rewarded for doing that by a home game.
- On the other hand, a 8-9 team who wins a crappy division probably doesn't deserve to host an 11-6 team, who has had the better season and plays in a better division.

The only thing I could come up with as a compromise is leave the Wild Card round as is, and for the Division and Conference rounds, leave the matchups the same way they would be determined, but flip home field to whoever has the best record. Example: Let's assume:

1 - Lions 15-2
2 - Eagles 14-3
3 - Rams 10-7
4 - Bucs 9-8
5 - Vikings 14-3
6 - 'Skins - 11-6 (We win the tie-break I think based on conference record.)
7 - Packers 11-6

Round one plays out as normal:
1 - Lions on Bye

#2 Eagles vs. #7 Packers
#3 Rams vs. #6 Skins
#4 Bucs vs. #5 Vikings

Now, let's assume for a minute, the Eagles implode and lose to the Packers. That could very well happen. The Packers are a good team. And let's assume the Rams best the 'Skins (boo) and Vikings beat the Bucs. (you could also do the same scenario with the 'Skins beating the Rams and the Bucs beating the Vikings. But if we're being honest, this seems more realistic. I don't think the Vikings are losing to the Bucs.)

Currently that means you'd have:

#1 Lions vs. #7 Packers.
#3 Rams vs. #5 Vikings. In Tampa. (According to Tony Kornheiser, there are only 3 things in Tampa: Waffle Houses, Old People and Strip Clubs) This is the one which seems unfair. The Vikings with the 14-3 regular season, 15-3 overall traveling to the 9-8 regular season, 10-8 overall, Bucs. So, in that case, I'd just flip the location. Have the team with the better record host the divisional and conference championship game. If they have the same record, then tie-breaker is the original playoff seeding.

I think that would work.

Yeah, it needs to be changed so that you get a playoff spot if you win your division, but have to travel if your record is worse than the team you'll be playing. Its ridiculous that the Vikings will likely have to travel to Atlanta or Tampa.

Its ridiculous that we are going to have to travel as well, but for our last three times in the playoffs (2012, 2015, 2020), we got to host games against teams which had better records.

Not worried at all about the Skins making the playoffs. They'll beat Atlanta. Don't rely on help. Someone at the bar I was at Sunday was actually relying on the sorry NYG to beat Atlanta to help us.....lol

FYI: we are all fans of Minnesota on Sunday against the Packers.

2 reasons:
1. A loss drops them to the same number of losses we have (currently) which is 5. That, assuming we take care of business against Atlanta, would put us in control of the #6 seed.

2, it makes the week 18 matchup between the Vikings and Lions a game for the division and #1 seed. That’s fun. And I will be rooting hard for the football gods to punish Dan Campbell for doing stupid Dan Campbell stuff.

Chiefs clinched the #1 seed and a bye, so I am somewhat assured they will beat the Bills at home and once again crush Buffalo’s soul in the playoffs. Which is a personal vendetta but makes me happy.

There is no way anybody can catch Philly for the #1 seed. And it’s very unlikely they could catch either the Lions or Vikings for the #1 seed.

Much rather play the Rams in LA than the Eagles in Philly, no cold weather to deal with and less of a home field advantage playing against the Rams, we probably would have just as many Commanders fans in LA as what the Rams would have.

1. We’ve been over this: don’t temp fate. We almost certainly lose both games and miss the playoffs. I’m not sure if I’ve reversed your fate tempting enough, so you might want to make a ritual sacrifice. Please do not tempt fate.

2. Dan Campbell is not a baffoon. He’s a damn good coach. But he does enough things against conventional wisdom that from time to time, conventional wisdom is right.

I remember so many talking about the first Dallas game as a gimmee.

This team is not good enough to take any team for granted. Atlanta is playing for its playoff life and we are down most of our offensive weapons. We need to be sharp.

I am sure somebody said this at some point, but we clinch a playoff spot with a Tampa loss.

So… GO PANTHERS! That would take the edge off the Falcons game and probably have the team playing free and loose.

So we really want the Panthers and Vikings to win in the early games. Lock in playoff berth and better for 6th seed
