2022 OTA / Camp thread

Well, you can't teach good hands. The team has tried that in the past with Devin Thomas, Michael Westbrook and host of guys that were great athletes but as it turned out not very good NFL wide receivers.

We used to say your hands should be soft enough to catch the ball with little sound (avoiding a 'slap'), but strong enough to do that without them moving.... like this.... it just naturally sticks...

I've clearly been impressed with Dotson...

I like him a lot as #3, could turn into a real player. Time to end the Sammis Reyes experiment.

Yep, time teams realize Antonio Gates was a once in a lifetime find at TE, coming from an alternate sports background.

Just like Kurt Warner. Not too many HOF quarterbacks stocking shelves at Basix.

as expected, it appears no hard feelings between Payne and Allen, and Davis looks BIG.

No mention of Jarrett Patterson...

'NO' joint practices this year..

Holcomb looks like he added some weight

Good news. But I still think we need a mentor at LB for Davis, Holcomb and Hudson, etc.

we also could use a veteran corner in case either Fuller or Jackson goes down during the season. The younger guys are not ready yet.

The position group that I am most excited to watch through camp(s) is the TE’s.

A healthy Logan Thomas plus John Bates, Cole Turner and Curtis Hodges bring NBA size, hands, and athleticism that the team has never had before. Plus, I will be very surprised if the Sammis Reyes experience hasn’t run it’s course.

NORMALLY don't care about this stuff... but I feel like Young is not being a 'team's guy. He wasn't at OTAs, supposedly rehabbing in Denver. There was video of all the D lineman partying at a Caps game a few weeks ago.. he wasn't there... now he shows up publicly... doesn't APPEAR to be a teammate anywhere in sight..

this isn't an alarm bell.. yet, but it's just something i noticed. He skipped OTAs last offseason to record commercials, saying 'this is a business.' He hadn't done anywhere near enough to be acting like he's bigger than practice... I hope he balls out this year, because if he doesnt... I can see him souring to this coaching staff pretty quick... if he hasn't already. Last year should have showed Young just how limited chances can be, not a great start.

I am starting to get some bad vibes from Young and Sweat. I try to counter those thoughts by looking at how the team slow-walked Jon Allen and are doing the same with Terry McLaurin, two young leaders who have done everything right.

Pro sports really are nothing more than a business, no matter how much fans wish it were more.

I have to agree.

Now I'm not going to sit here and act like ALL NFL players need to have the same personality as those two. There WILL be players that demand the spot light more than others, but I really want those spotlight guys to either absolutely OWN Sundays, or at least be present when the team is practicing. Young had a pretty good rookie season, yes he won DROY, but he wasn't statistically anywhere near the top in any measurable category. I will say he influenced games, and situations, like the Burrow hit, the fumble return, and others, but those are moments... and it was obvious the defense got BETTER after he went down.

Again, I'm rooting for him, and I'll never 'blame' Rivera and co. for that pick because I would have made 10 times in a row without being afforded the hindsight we have now. I just need Chase to take that next step. I would LIKE to see him with the team, at all OTAs, being the LEADER. McLaurin and Payne are without contracts, and both have made it known they will NOT be participating in On-Field practices at this point, but they're still doing the team conditioning, weight lifting, meeting, and other activities with the OTAs. They're HERE. Chase has chosen to not be here multiple years in a row now, and he's coming off a TERRIBLE seasons given the expectations, and hope, surrounding him. Those shouldn't be his priority, but getting better should...

The interesting factor to me is that I have absolutely no problem with Chase making the decision to rehab as he sees fit. Especially considering the state and history of the teams training staff.

He is probably better served sticking with the protocol he chose and I see no need for him to delay or interrupt that program in order to just ‘be around’ the team. Rivera made it a bigger issue than it needed to be by harping on it.

I see this as a completely different situation than last offseason. I gave him no benefit of the doubt for that. He needs to take the very best path towards being ready for camp. If that is conducted remotely, so be it.

Now, Sweat not attending? That is a bigger and more questionable behavior for me.

I don't think any of the 'facts' you guys have covered, in and of itself is a 'warning sign'. But I will say this. Chase Young got absolutely roasted last season for not attending OTAs - and he deserved to get roasted. To elect not to attend this year after getting roasted last year, that speaks to more than a little tone-deafness. Not like he can't benefit from being there. And as far as interrupting his personal 'rehab', I can't imagine at least a few days is going to make a meaningful difference and surely he is far enough along to know what he should be doing.

So far in his career, Chase Young is far more hype than reality. He's supposed to be this 'unicorn' player. So far, I'm not seeing it but I'd love to be totally wrong.

I think Young believes he is 'special'. Why wouldn't he - it's all he's heard his entire adult life. I doubt he thinks the rules or expectations thrust on 'normal' players applies to him. And that might be the problem.
