2021 Roster Updates

I’m not against signing him. I was against trading for him because you had to give up assets. Signing him to a reasonable contract would be fine.

Ultimately, a very small percentage of our fanbase will be satisfied once the dust settles with our QB situation. I think we are going to have to accept an open competition in camp and embrace the guy who runs with the job...and that is not necessarily a bad thing.
 
I like the idea of having Cam Sims back in training camp. He showed definite growth a year ago and while he has his flaws and will not cut it as a #2 option, if he is put in the right type of role, I think he can be a useful player to continue to develop here.
 
I'm skeptical he can improve. Some guys have great hands and concentration, some don't. I would love to be wrong. I wonder if this is more about them thinking he's shown enough flash in highlight reels to get real interest from other teams who may have to cut vets who'd demand a higher premium, than it is about wanting to be sure they can match an offer? I've just never gotten the impression they were super impressed with him, particularly given his inconsistency.

His stats are actually very respectable. If you didn't watch all of Washington's games, you'd be enticed - but it's those repeated drops of easy catches that gives me pause. Maybe I'm being too hard on the kid.

Sims is inexpensive, has some NFL experience and like a lot of other players on the roster is looking to improve as we move forward.

There is no doubt the team needs to find a veteran #2 who can pair with Terry McLaurin and start with a resume that is proven.

But Sims has the physical upside to improve from where he is and after suffering through years of 'developing' players like Trey Quinn and Aldrick Robinson that could not impact the game, Sims' size and ability to make the contested catch is at least worth the effort of seeing through for another season.
 
I think it also proves Rivera and company are not looking to overhaul, instead they're looking to upgrade. They're not going to put all their eggs into one basket for anything. They keep players around that they believe in but are absolutely willing to upgrade pretty much any position if the right pieces become available.

In terms of a fit, I think that the versatility that Juju brings is better than any FA wideout available. Additionally, he brings skills that complement McLaurin nicely. That all said, if we truly believe in Terry and are convinced that he is our #1 for the long haul in DC, I think we need to pump the breaks on Juju and show restraint. There are not too many teams paying two receivers premium money and finding long term success with that approach. I do believe that we can get close to equivalent production out of a group of value signings and a day 2 draft pick at WR.

Two things are now official as a result of this news related to Newton:

1. WFT fans' collective sigh of relief this morning could be heard all the way from Mars.

2. Canadian Hog has been fired from all future BGO podcast productions.
 
Personally, I am okay with us not getting Cam. But again, yours was a defensible argument.

And this doesn't mean we weren't going to TRY to get him ... just that Bellidude wouldn't let him leave the building.
 
With Newton off the table, we obviously are going to have to decide if it is best to go after some of the other reclamation projects such as Mariota, Darnold, Winston, etc., or if we are better served making a move up in the draft.

I personally feel that Fields, Wilson, and Lawrence will obviously not be doable in terms of a trade up due to cost. Those guys are all gone I think within the first 7 picks or so. However, the wildcard is Lance. If he makes past the top 10, I can see our team making a play for him and rolling with the better of Heinicke and Allen as the bridge starter for 2021 while he sits and learns.

I personally do not think our team's compete window truly opens up in the NFC until 2022 provided all stays on track this year and we continue to show progress. Who knows, if we have our long term starter marinating and waiting in the wings and an Allen or Heinicke produce in 2021, maybe you just created a solid situation and competitive quarterback room heading into 2022, where spots have to be earned and not simply given.

I really don't understand the fascination with Mariota within this organization - if those reports were true.

If they are true, I don't understand why the Raiders if they are planning to release him down the road weren't able to deal him to Washington for whatever they could get in terms of a middle round pick, etc.

Nobody was trading assets for Mariota at a $17mil cap hit for 2021 and the league knew it. Vegas' hand was forced and Rivera and co called their bluff.

If we can bring Mariota in for about $5-8mil to compete, it woudln't be my favorite move but i could stomach that as long as if he doesn't show out we can get out of it easy
 
I think if he is healthy Heinicke beats out Mariota in a fair competition.

Mariota since that breakout season in 2016 really has not done much over the past 3-4 years to warrant any confidence in his ability as a starter in the NFL.

Tennessee picked up his fifth year option but ultimately moved on from him without much argument.

His injuries in large measure seem to correlate to his inability to mature into a pocket quarterback who scambles vs. a running quarterback that passes.

If you are Cam Newton at 6'4 and 240 you can play 8-9 years of that style before it catches up to you or in the case of Lamar Jackson he's simply quicker and faster than 95% of the defenders in the league and avoids a lot of direct hits that would sildeline others.
 



I feel more and more like this is going to be the narrative this offseason and it's going to be crazy. The cap is down but TV deals being on the horizon it's likely to jump. Agents and players have likely talked and are willing to take a 'lesser' deal and play 1 year looking to hit big next offseason as the money rebounds and they know they can likely ask for a bigger pay out next year..
