I think things are a bit different.. Rivera has had a year to see team needs so his opinion may have changed. We also have a heck of a lot more cap room and the defense appeared to take a big step earlier than was planned. A rangy free safety could be a VERY valuable addition.
I do agree that there's a chance Rivera knows more than the rest of us and something about is not interested who knows.. ?
I have to say in regards to the Scherff franchise tag news, I am actually okay with it. You look around the league and news has recently surfaced that guys like Norwell and Zeitler are being made available for trade and will likely eventually end up getting released when the dust settles. These were both guys that signed big contracts as guards. Scherff will cost you for a year (assuming we do not get a long term deal ironed out), but in the meantime it also buys you a year of time to see if you can develop a younger, cheaper option in the event that you have to replace him. Does the team give Charles a look inside, do we draft a guard on day 2 or early day 3 of the draft? The smart teams always seemingly know when to cut ties with someone, but also have a succession plan firmly in place.
Fans gave Bruce crap for using the tag instead of getting a long term deal done and rightfully so.

I think comparing the impact of being unable to get a long-term deal done for a guard vs. a supposed franchise QB is apples to oranges.
Look - if Scherff won’t accept a reasonable deal, they have two options, let him go or franchise him again. That’s it. They chose the latter and I’m sure it wasn’t based on a dartboard. If there was ever going to be a long-term deal with Scherff we’d already have one. They are buying time to find his replacement. There are pros and cons to either way they go. Scherff knows the offense and his teammates and they know exactly what he brings. We can say ‘we could get player x to replace him and he would be great’ but those are both suppositions.

Disagree. It’s the same principle. They drug their feet on Kirk, when they could’ve had him cheaper. Looks the same way here with Scherff only the negotiators are different.
Bruce was notoriously cheap.
Are Mayhew and Hurney the same way?
Look, I don’t want to set the market at guard but it seems like the team has backed themselves into that corner.
It will be interesting to see if they offer him a fair deal or low ball him.
And just a reminder: you don’t know how valuable a good guard and interior protection is until you don’t have one....
Fair but I will throw this caveat into the equation.
Kirk Cousins was known to have offered a 3 year deal to the team and they said no. We don't know that Scherff has ever actually put an offer on the table.
Kirk Cousins was a mid 20's year old QB . Scherff will be 30 by the time the team takes the field again and hasn't played 16 games since 2016.
Kirk Cousins was drafted while Bruce was in charge.. Scherff was not drafted by the current front office.
We don't know why Scherff hasn't signed. Part of it, as Mike pointed out, very well could be the concern that you don't want to spend that kind of money on a guy who has been incapable of playing a whole season, so paying him $18 mil this year to see if he can maintain that All Pro level while staying healthy opens the door to looking at a deal at the end of the season. The other thing is what Boone said... the tag keeps an All Pro guard in your building while you take an additional season to replace him because they don't want to pay that price for him. I don't think that's cheap, I think that's responsible. I also didn't want to pay Kirk what he got from Minnesota, I wanted to pay him that original deal he approached the team with... Allen and co screwed it up so bad that money was no longer a factor... he couldn't get out of here fast enough.
I have a feeling we are going offense heavy in this offseason so Guard may be in the plans. If you draft / sign a younger guy and he proves to be valuable you go into next season with him capable of replacing Scherff or you open the door to bringing Scherff back on a deal and that other stud takes over at LG. Keeping him in the building gives you options.
