2014 Coaching Search Rumors

Don't want Cowher.

He's been out too long and would want too much control.
 
I found something interesting that in a way relates to the Redskins current coaching situation.

How long do coaches stay with their teams these days if they're not consistently successful?


Look at this list.



It is a list of teams, coaches, hiring year and number of playoff appearances during their tenure.



Jets-Rex Ryan 2009-2 playoffs


Falcons-Mike Smith 2008-4 playoffs


Ravens-Jon Harbaugh 2008-5 playoffs


Steelers-Mike Tomlin 2007-4 playoffs


Packers-Mike McCarthy 2006-6 playoffs


Saints-Sean Payton 2006-5 playoffs


Giants-Tom Coughlin 2004-5 playoffs


Bengals-Marvin Lewis 2003-5 playoffs


Pats-Bill Belichick 2000-11 playoffs


These are the only teams in the league whose current head coach was hired before Shanahan became HC here.


What's my point, you ask? Every one of these teams has had multiple playoff appearances and most of them at least one or more playoff wins during the current coaches tenure.



9 teams.


The other 23 have coaches who have been there less than five years Two of them came in the same time as Shanny.



Seahawk's-Pete Carroll-3 playoffs


Cowboys-Jason Garret-no playoffs, but it's the Jerruh so go figure.

This isn't about Shanahan, it's about his replacement-whoever that might turn out to be.



It's about being an NFL HC in 2014.



He is, I think, going to be on a tight schedule-4 seasons, a slight possibility of five, at most before he puts the Redskins in the playoffs or at least has two consecutive winning seasons in which the Redskins barely miss a wildcard spot.


This is simply my estimation of what to expect the goal assigned to the new HC will actually be if he is to avoid a Black Monday in, say, 2017 or so.

For the first time YESTERDAY I heard an unequivocal statement that Allen is responsible.

Now we can evaluate him going forward.

I believe Shanahan disregarded the scouts and front office people.

How else do you draft Josh LeRibeus in Round 3 despite the fact he had only one solid college season and continued to have fitness/weight issues?

Ironic that he comes here and enters camp in Year 2 sixty pounds overweight?

It was a dog pick from the get go.

But Shanny always knows best when it comes to the OL right? :laugh:

'No meddle' (assuming that's true - I haven't seen Shanahan's contract, have you guys?) doesn't mean you stand by and silently watch a guy bring down the franchise. It's water under the bridge, but if having the guy who has stood by for 4 years and supposedly is a numbers/financial guy, nothing more, suddently stand up and claim he's got everything under control - if that doesn't raise your eyebrows, I have to say I'm surprised. I have nothing against Allen. But he has been a huge part of this team's leadership for 4 years. I'm not, to date, impressed. Sorry.

Are the Redskins angling to hire an offensive coach so they can retain Haslett/Morris on D and not have to pay them to leave?

Interesting to see if new coach gets to pick his own coordinators.
 
Isn't Haslett on a one year deal that expires in the near future?

I thought I heard yesterday, teams that wanted to speak with coaching assistants needed to have permission and could only speak with coaches from teams that have a bye. But that they had to wait until the 5th. Maybe it was they had to do it before the 5th because that would be a work week for those teams with byes.
 
So I did hear it wrong. We can talk to them until the 5th...

Assistants with teams who have a first-round bye can interview only up until the conclusion of the wild-card games on Sunday, and no interviews of any assistants are allowed during conference championship week.

My understanding is they can interview until the week before they play. In any event, was just wondering what people thought. This as not a name I saw brought up anywhere, though on the face of it, may not be a bad idea to at least take a look.

Right on track with you in terms of wanting Zimmer as head coach.

Personally, I think one of the most important criteria in selecting a new coach is hunger/drive.

We need someone who not only has a bit of urgency to prove themselves worthy as a head coach, but someone who has the fire in their belly to right this ship and steer it in the right direction. For me, the likes of Zimmer and Ken Whisenhunt fit this type of description.

When you look at a guy like Zimmer, he's been interviewed on five different occasions for head coaching jobs, but eventually was overlooked. That alone in theory would put a bit of a chip on his shoulder you would think. You combine this with his impressive track record as a defensive coordinator, and I think that makes him a prime candidate.

Unfortunately, I have little confidence that he will even be interviewed.

Pursuing a guy like Bevell from Seattle smells of catering to our quarterback in my estimation. While I understand that Robert is an integral part of this franchise's success, I personally feel you need to select the coach that is best from an organizational standpoint. Not one that is necessarily suitable for a particular player.

I sensed in Robert's rookie year that he became bigger than the franchise itself. After the Seattle loss, it was clear that if that trend continued, we'd have difficulty making strides forward as an organization.

Make a coaching selection with the best interests of the entire organization in mind, whoever that may be.

I totally agree re: best interests of the organization. My question is, why would Bevell not have the interests of the organization in mind yet build our offense around what our QB does best. I know that sounds like catering to RG3, but take RG3 out of the picture and just say any quarterback, Bevell has done great with the offense in Seattle with Wilson. I'll be the first to admit I don't follow the coaches the way you guys do so I bow to your opinion. I don't want the players to think they are catering to RG3, but I also don't want them to think they are going to totally disregard what was accomplished last year with a healthy RG3.
