The Legend
Think Gruden is going to be smiling introducing another guard at Redskins Park?
The problem for the Redskins is we DO tend to draft linemen well in the early rounds (when it happens) while our record with skill players early is pretty poor.
Trent Williams in 2010, Ryan Kerrigan in 2011, Brandon Scherff in 2015, Jonathan Allen in 2017.
Those are all HITS. And we didn't have picks in 2013 and 2014 due to the trade up with the Rams in 2012.
We also found Morgan Moses, Spencer Long and Matt Ioannidis with #3/#5 picks.
Which brings us to the question of skill players.
We traded a King's ransom to move up and take Robert Griffin. At 28 he is out of the NFL.
We drafted David Amerson with our top pick in 2013 and he was waived by the Redskins and subsequently picked up by the Raiders. We got no compensation back for him in a trade not even a conditional late round pick.
In 2016, we drafted Josh Doctson at WR. To say he has been disappointing to date is an understatement. He has a great skills toolbox but also has shown questionable hands and route running skills. He still looks very raw at times despite being such a high pick and having been in the building for 2 years working to learn this offense.
He has a four year deal with a team option. He's already through 2 years of that deal and we still don't know much if anything about what his future holds with us.
So, overall while the team may now be loathe to draft 'big uglies' at or near the top of the draft, the recent history shows that we seem to be a lot better at projecting OL and DL talent than we are with projecting talent at the 'stat' positions on the field.
