Tech/Computer advice from me

where I live....verizon has been laying a lot of fibre optic cable. so this isn't always the case.

That's interesting because last we heard (about 2 1/2 years ago) Verizon had stopped their FIOS (fiber cable) rollout indefinitely. They were only doing it because the government (federal, state, and local) was paying for it, once those funds dried up Verizon stopped.

It was to be a permanent halt in rolling it out. Anyone that didn't already have it wasn't going to be getting it. So if they're laying fiber cable that is very interesting...

I got a call from Verizon about free upgrade to fibre optic lines due to service issues in my area. I was told they need to access inside the house for about 20 minutes to install a battery pack.

I told them, "thanks, but no thanks".

NBC.com hacked to distribute malware

This is why the idea that you don't need antivirus because you don't visit 'shady' sites or porn sites is so misguided. It doesn't matter what type of sites you visit, if you're computer is not protected and the site you visit is infected there is a good chance you will get something.

Kind of like saying you don't need condoms because you don't sleep with shady girls.

I have a brand new, fresh out of the box Motorola SBG6580 cable modem/wireless router. Today, Cox came and activated my internet. So I connected my modem as I've done with many modems before, and the wireless output on it is full bore, but I cannot connect to the internet through the ethernet cable at all. I tried multiple cables, none worked. I tried running them to my wife's PC, it wouldn't get on either. I called Cox, and they told me it shows it's active on their end, and it should be working no problem. But it's not. So I have to wait until Sunday so they can come look at it. I'd rather fix the problem myself, any ideas what the problem could be?

Here's what I tried.....

- Installed the software

- Set up the modem like any fool knows how to do

- It didn't work, so I set it up the way the disk told me to step by step (same way btw)

- Reinstalled everything

- Rebooted the computer

- Reset network adapters

- Reset the modem

- Repeated the procedures over and over and over again, then returned modem for a new one just in case, and SAME PROBLEM.

Yet, rather than work, I plug in the modem and the power light is green/solid as it should be, and so is the wifi light. The send and receive lights are solid blue, as they should be. The online light is solid green. Meaning it's not connected. HOW DO I FIX THIS? :doh1::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall:

The router address should be 192.168.100.1 go there in a browser and see what it says.

simple question..can you ping it? do you know the IP address of it?

Do you have a firewall that is turned on that could be blocking it?
I turned off the firewall to see if anything changed, it didn't. And I just discovered the wireless signal I'm running on isn't from the modem, it's from my father in law's phone :wall: So the modem just isn't doing anything but sitting there looking fancy.

The router address should be 192.168.100.1 go there in a browser and see what it says.
It times out.

Running various troubleshooters, it says my dns servers are not responding.

When I bought and installed my Motorola cable modem for Comcast after I hooked it up I had to call and give them my MAC address and they sent a signal to it and it activated. Without doing that it won't work.

That was the first thing I tried. He even read it back to me to make sure he had it right, and he did.

To ask a stupid question to make sure I have all my bases covered, does it matter that my verizon internet won't be canceled until Monday? The verizon modem is off and it's DSL, but I want to make sure I'm not doing something basic and dumb, because in the past I've always already had one canceled before activating another.

You probably did this, but just a basic thing, did you check your network settings and make sure it was dhcp and obtain dns auto. Thinking maybe the old setup for dsl is messing with you somehow.

DHCP is enabled, and dns detect is auto. Already checked, but double checked and no change.

Also just looked it up and the IP address for this router should be 192.168.0.1 give that a try and see if it'll let you into the modem interface.

When I talked to tech support from Cox to set it up, the number above listed as the mac address is the number he asked for to activate the gateway (listed on the tag as the HFC MAC ID). On the product tag under that, there is a number that says gateway mgmt MAC ID, and it's a different number. Is that the number he should have been asking for?

Well at least you know the routers good. You also have a good wan ip, what does your ipconfig read out? Just go to start>run>ipconfig and it should bring up the info. Looks like a cable company issue to me.

You don't have a coax cable coming from a splitter do you?

Not sure, have not seen the 2 differnt MAC addresses before. You have lock end channels so it looks like you are connected but are unable to resolve addresses due to some sort of DNS issue. But the DNS servers are listed too. Weird.

When I try to do ipconfig, the black box flashes for a split second and vanishes. Wtf? Never had that happen before. I've tried it a dozen times. Gonna see if I can be quick enough to capture it and at least see what the hell it says. Got a way to fix that?

As for the splitter, I banished all splitters from my house years ago, they always caused problems. For my computer, the line runs from the Cox box at the end of my driveway, up to the service panel on the side of the house, and inside the box it has an extender with a grounding wire, but no splitter.

From there, it runs directly through the back wall of my house to my computer.
