Default DCIst: Silver Line is Off the Rails

One of the main reasons National is the preferred airport in the region is accessibility - this would probably change the game, if they can get their acts together. I know I would probably consider Dulles again if there was metro access.
    ************************************************** ******

The Dulles Rail project is overbudget, WTOP reports. The first phase of the project, scheduled to be completed next year, is going to need more than the nearly $2.8 billion originally laid out to build the Silver Line from Falls Church to Reston.

But now it looks like the project will need an additional $150 million to complete the project. And though Dulles Rail hit up the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which is leading oversight of the Silver Line project, for the extra dough, it looks as though everyone is going to have to chip in, according to WTOP:

Actually, it won't just be the Authority that has to kick in more—taxpayers in Fairfax and Loudoun Counties—as well as drivers on the Dulles Toll Road will have to shoulder the extra costs.
By comparison, the $150 million is just a shade over 5 percent of the total cost of Phase 1 of the Silver Line project, and not all of it may be needed, the head of the MWAA told WTOP. Still, the ask comes just a day after the Virginia Senate failed to pass a state budget proposal over Democrats' objections to Gov. Bob McDonnell's proposal to spend $150 million on the Silver Line, when they were hoping for twice that.

If all the extra money is needed it could mean that the cost of driving the Dulles Toll Road could increase from the relatively modest $2.25 today to nearly $7 to drive the 28-mile highway in 2018.

Do these things ever come in on time and on budget?
