    Default Panthers/Redskins - Please Update

    Greetings all,

I believe yesterday marked the first time in over 21 years that I've missed an entire Sunday of football. The wife and I had our 5 month old baptized yesterday. I could tell just by the final score, and the fact that at one point the game was 30-13, that yesterday was a complete and utter mess in Carolina. With that being said, if you guys can please update me as to the specifics, and what you saw out there on the field, that would be greatly appreciated. Next week in Toronto, I'll be up close and personal, but for now I need to rely on the great minds of BGO to help their Canadian friends out.

Thanks for any and all feedback.

Defense: piss-poor tackling led to a 25-yard scamper by Newton when we had him dead to rights for a 10-yard loss. This set the tone for the rest of the day, and the Panthers O pretty much dictated play. Our secondary without Atogwe was abused by Steve Smith, and then by Brandon LaFell when we started to focus more attention on #89. Not sure if Cofield got injured, but Nield saw a lot of action and was pretty consistently playing like a 7th-rounder (read: getting blown off the ball). We did a pretty decent job against the ground attack, but then again they didn't really need to run that much.

Kerrigan and Orakpo had good games - both had a sack (Kerrigan's sack was wiped out by an offensive penalty from Carolina); Orakpo's sack would have killed a lesser man.

Offense: run game was popping from the start, but per usual, Kyle tried to mix in passes at the most inopportune times. Its frustrating, as it seems like whenever we're stuffed just once or twice, Kyle is quick to abandon the run - he is very predictable that way. Then, when Hightower went down, the running game went with him and Kyle got pass-happy (handed the ball off just once after Hightower left the game). Should have kept feeding Torain and Helu the rock.

Beck played okay - he fumbled and threw a pick (miscommunication btw him and Hankerson, not sure who's fault it was), but kept a few plays/drives alive with nice throws and his feet. Showed a great pocket presence on his TD pass to Davis. Also rushed for a TD.

Bottom line: there is no way they should have lost this game - they are just a turrible team.

The rushing attack wasnt trhat off balanced considering once we were behind 30 -13 thats when the passing started to become outnumbered as the last 15 some plays by the skins were passing but behind 30-13 you have no shot of winning if you run the ball

CH, it was not a pleasant game. Cam's big run early really put the defense on their heels, and in my opnion, took away some of their aggressiveness. I think they were very concerned with him escaping the pocket after that.

On offense, our run game looked terrific just about all game. Why Shanny, Jr decided that passing was the way to go is beyond me. Beck looked all right, a little nervous at first, but he settled down and played competently most of the time. The problem was that Santana got injured early on, and he was Beck's safety valve at first. Davis eventually took over that role, but it took a little while to get that chemistry down.

We actually didn't play horribly. If you look at the stats, they are pretty similar for both sides. The Panthers got some big plays and Newton showed yet again why he is going to be a super-star QB.

I would also add that Beck had some passes dropped that should have gone for first-downs/potential long-gainers. Davis, Gaffney, and Armstrong all dropped passes; they weren't helping Beck out there.

Biggest head-scratcher moment: game is tied at 6 towards the end of the first half, and instead of kneeling it and taking a tied game into the half, Kyle decided to be aggressive and attack. Gaffney fumbles the ball in our half, Panthers take a 3-pt lead. Was a really strange sequence.

Another thing which I think could have easily turned the game around was when D-Hall dropped an easy INT, that just hit him between the numbers. Had he held on, it would have been a certain Pick 6, and perhaps a game-changer. It's almost like he was trying to fill the void of Butterfingers, that was created when Carlos left.
