While I have posted and believe the club needs to be wary of players with the bio and attitude profile of a Shaun Rogers, the fact the team is interviewing free agents for two of the most pressing roster needs, NT and FS, this early is at least some comfort that the front office sees the club much as we do.
Both Atogwe and Rogers physically would be significant upgrades on anything the Redskins had in 2010 at their position.
Age at 29 and 32 is a concern even if the attitude questions with Rogers were not there.
It's also apparent that neither player is looking to make a quick move for 'fair value' deal. These guys are going to visit 8-10 teams, although Washington does have thanks to Allen's moves last year a LOT of cap space to work with given a new CBA.
Again, my preference would be to look for 5th and 6th year veterans in free agency when that process starts as these players at 26 and 27 are guys you can build with over the next 3-4 years.
Rogers at 32 is a guy who could help for perhaps a year or two. Supposedly, he wants a deal for $5M a year which seems a bit rich for him given his performance in 2009 and 2010.
But give the Redskins credit. In an environment where few teams are doing anything other than laying off groundskeepers and secretaries, the Redskins are at least looking at their needs going forward.
