Post Matt Terl's Redskins Blog: Pictures From Mini-Camp 3, Day 3

And so the second mini-camp under former Denver head coach Mike Shanahan wraps up on a Mothers' Day where the weather could not have felt more Colorado-esque. Probably doesn't signify anything at all, but a more metaphor-happy writer than I could probably do something with the birth of a new era and weather that reminds the head coach of his most successful days. I'll leave that to the people who excel at it, though, and leave you with another round of pictures instead.

Interesting drill in this next one, where a set of receivers run their patterns and two QBs throw two balls to two different guys. I'm not sure exactly what it was meant to be teaching, but it was confusing as heck to photograph.

Jeremy Jarmon works with the sled as he continues to return from his injuries. The sleds have been popular this offseason, with guys marking down their best times, max weights, and number of reps. Another addition by new head strength and conditioning coach Ray Wright, I believe.

Mike Williams has looked solid at right guard so far in offseason work. Amazing what a benefit it is to be able to focus on football and not on losing a hundred-plus pounds. "I know what it takes now," Williams said yesterday, according to Jason Reid of the Washington Post. "I know what it takes to be at this level and to be the best player you can. Now, I spend all my day in the weight room. Why? Because I know what this job requires. It took me some time, but I get it."

I've gotten a few emails with this question, so here: photographic proof that Chris Horton still exists and is at mini-camp. Although the coaches continue to say that there's no clear-cut strong- and free-safety positions in this defense, it certainly seems that Horton is behind LaRon Landry in the closer-to-the-ball safety position and, as I wrote yesterday, Reed Doughty and Kareem Moore appear to be 1-2 in some order at the farther-away-from-the-ball safety position.

These next two pictures were among my favorites from today: a drill where offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan played the role of middle linebacker and tried to bat down or intercept the passes intended for the receivers. He guaranteed an INT before the drill was over, but he didn't get one while I was watching. Still: cool drill, and some impressive leaping by the OC.

This is undrafted free agent TE Logan Paulsen. Wes Bunting of National Football Post has speculated that he might project to offensive tackle in the pros, but he sure doesn't seem to be built like one. Time will tell.

And this is a try-out guy, Brandon Banks. He's a return specialist from Kansas State who lists as 5-7, 150 pounds. I say "lists as" because ... well, for scale purposes, that's Santana Moss in the hood to the left of Banks in the photo. Moss is a few feet farther away than Banks, so perspective makes him appear shorter than he is, and he's not a tall guy to begin with. And Banks is still shorter than him in this picture.

What I'm trying to say, I guess, is that this is the shortest guy I've seen on a professional football practice field, by a fairly wide margin. Interested to see if he actually gets signed for a full look-see.

Now: several pictures of guys running.

And finally, a photographic answer to one of the most persistent offseason questions: will the team find a way to get both Chris Cooley and Fred Davis on the field at the same time? If this picture is any indication, the answer is an emphatic yes.

(Quick note, because I know someone will ask: no, mini-camp was not open to the public. The folks in the background were invited guests from the Redskins Kids Club.)

I remember seeing Darrell Green play live and thinking he looked small compared to everyone else on the field. He was only 5'9", 185 lbs. This guy must look tiny. Moss is listed as 5'10", 200 lbs, so bigger than DG at least.

Moss may be listed at that height, but the only way he comes close if he's got on the tallest cleats made...

I'm 5'5". Saw him and his family at Target a couple years ago. Dude was barely taller than me. Maybe 2-3" tops. That would make Brandon Banks basically a member of the Lollipop Guild.
