Default Release: REDSKINS SIGN HOWARD GREEN, MARQUES HAGANS, RYAN TORAIN AND ROYDELL WILLIAMS

    PRESS RELEASE

    For Immediate Release

    April 19, 2010

REDSKINS SIGN HOWARD GREEN, MARQUES HAGANS, RYAN TORAIN AND ROYDELL WILLIAMS

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed free agent defensive lineman Howard Green, wide receiver Marques Hagans, running back Ryan Torain and wide receiver Roydell Williams. All four players participated in this past weekend’s mini-camp on a tryout basis. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Green, 31, has appeared in 49 career games, with 12 starts, in six seasons. He played in 12 contests with the New York Jets last season and logged 37 tackles. Green (6-2, 320) spent the prior two campaigns in Seattle, where he appeared in a combined 18 games and recorded 18 tackles and one sack.

Green saw his most significant action in 2004 as a member of the New Orleans Saints. That season, his second with the club, Green appeared in 14 games, starting 12, and racked up 53 tackles. Green originally entered the NFL as a sixth-round draft pick of the Houston Texans out of LSU in 2002. He was waived following training camp and claimed by Baltimore, where he would participate in one contest. He was later waived by Baltimore and spent the final two weeks of the season on Houston’s active roster, but was inactive for both contests.

Green has also spent time on the training camp rosters of the Miami Dolphins in 2005 and the Minnesota Vikings in 2007.

A native of Donaldsville, La., Green was born Jan. 12, 1979.

Hagans, 27, has played in six career NFL games with the St. Louis Rams (four in 2007) and Kansas City Chiefs (two in 2008), totaling nine receptions for 108 yards. Hagans (5-10, 205) was first signed to the Washington practice squad in Week 15 of the 2008 season after spending the majority of the year with the Chiefs’ practice squad. Hagans remained with the Redskins through the 2009 offseason and training camp before being released (8/30/09) prior to the final preseason game.

He originally entered the NFL in 2006 as a fifth-round draft pick of St. Louis out of the University of Virginia, where he played quarterback, wide receiver and kick returner. He was born on Dec. 29, 1982, and is a native of Hampton, Va.

Torain, 23, has played in two games, with one start, amassing 15 carries for 69 yards (4.6 avg.) and one touchdown for the Denver Broncos during his single season in the NFL.

Torain (6-1, 225) was originally selected by the Broncos in the fifth round (139th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft, where he played one season under current Redskins Head Coach Mike Shanahan. Torain was waived by the Broncos (8/15/09) prior to the start of the 2009 season.

After spending two seasons at Butler Community College (El Dorado, Kan.), Torain played two seasons at Arizona State, where he posted seven 100-yard rushing outings in 19 career games (14 starts). Torain was named a second-team All-Pac-10 selection in 2006 after ranking third in the conference and 21st in the nation with 1,229 rushing yards.

Born on Aug. 10, 1986, Torain is a native of Topeka, Kan.

Williams originally joined the Redskins as a free agent on May 4, 2009, and spent the offseason in Washington before being waived/injured on August 5, 2009.

The six-foot, 187-pound Williams played three seasons for Tennessee (2005-07) after the Titans selected him in the fourth round of the 2005 draft out of Tulane. In 2007, Williams started 14 games and tied for the team lead with 55 catches for 719 yards and a team-high four touchdowns. For his career, he has made 84 receptions for 1,139 yards and six touchdowns.

Williams was a two-time All-Conference USA selection as a junior and senior (2003-04) and set a league record with 35 receiving touchdowns. The 29-year-old Williams is a native of LaPlace, La.

I'm mildly surprised they didn't sign Jerry Porter. Ah well, more camp fodder although it wouldn't surprise me if Torain stuck around.

Yeah, I seem to remember Torain being one of Shanahan's favs in 2008, before all the injuries. It may be that Shanny keeps him around as depth, especially because it will be very economical to do so.

Either him or Alridge is my guess.....I'm still assuming that the Skins will only keep two btw Portis, Johnson and Parker. But it's possible they bring 4 HB/RBs and Mike Sellers to the 53 man squad.
