Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2017 (Continual Updates)

Part of the reason the Redskins fell in the division from 2015 to 2016 was the lack of production from the 2016 picks out of the gate.

Doctson was hurt the entire season, Cravens was playing out of position at inside linebacker and struggled mightily at times. Then you throw in that Kendall Fuller was coming off knee surgery and wasn't 100%, and you are getting almost ZERO impact from your draft.

That's exciting to know, that this year we could see a handful of players from the last TWO drafts burst onto the scene for virtually the first time.

Yep! Everything I've read on Doctson so far is impressive. Crisp routes, separation, and not dropping any thrown to him.

I'm excited to see this wr group spread out & running apeshit on some defenses this yr.

All the writers keep raggin on us for losing Garcon & Jackson, and that it's a steep drop, but those who have watched camp say that Pryor & Doctson will likely be a better duo.

Monday Tidbits

UDFA guard Kyle Kalis is having a good camp and there is a buzz going around that he could be a starter in a couple of years.

LB Chris Carter is having a good camp as well. He is a special teams standout, but has been impressing on passing drills at middle linebacker.

Arie Kouandjio is failing to impress during the first week of camp. He is not expected to challenge Shawn Lauvao for the left guard position. At this rate, the backup could be in danger of not making the final roster.

DL Jonathan Allen is now a fixture on the first unit.

From John Keim: "Matt Ioannidis has looked bigger and stronger at end. He's done a nice job using that power to win battles, and he has a knack for finding the ball. Former general manager Scot McCloughan loved him last year, partly for his mindset. It's a good start for Ioannidis; where he takes it from here is up to him."

Josh Norman has been corrected a few times about technique from Torrian Gray. Norman has been very supportive of Gray and the CB listens intently when these corrections are suggested.

Terelle Pryor says the Redskins have a unique problem. It will be difficult to cut any of the receivers as they are all good and provide superior depth. Fans may disagree to a certain point (Ryan Grant).

Another day, another case of Bashaud Breeland having troubles. Today he muffed punts.

Keith Marshall was waived today. If no team claims him, then he will be placed on IR.

Nate Sudfeld knocked off several days of sub par play and looked sharp on Monday.

Monday's afternoon practice was very spirited. There were good plays on both sides of the ball and a lot of trash talking back and forth.

So anyway, Bashaud Breeland tried to kick a field goal at the close of practice on Monday. It traveled about ten yards and had about three yards of altitude. In other words, a four year old would've blocked that kick.

Jordan Reed had his knee iced late in practice and after a workout.

Martrell Spaight had his hamstring examined after practice - no other updates.

Players mentioned yesterday who are day to day with various injuries - no change in that status today.

So just keeping record of the unimpressive so far we got...

Breeland
Quick
Kouandjio
Sudfeld (until today)
Taylor

Out of these guys I'd say I'm disappointed mostly in Arie, hoping that kid would beast out at LG. Oh well

Tuesday Notes

D.J. Swearinger is very happy to be with the Redskins and feels like he finally has a football home. He grew up being a fan of the team.

One defensive linemen who is really progressing each day and continues to impress is free agent Stacy McGee.

Is Ryan Anderson showing that he could be the best pass rusher that the Redskins have in their arsenal? The buzz in camp seems to back it up.

For the first time in camp, Colt McCoy was sharper and looked good, but it was against the second unit defense. He was superb on the last two minute drill of the day.

Deshazor Everett had a very good Tuesday and he is likely solidifying a place on the roster with his play on special teams.

Junior Galette is looking quicker with each successive practice.

Terrelle Pryor had a one handed grab, against the body, and fully turned around on a fade route to the end zone today. Describing it does it zero justice. The catch came against Dashaun Phillips.

Even though he won't appear until game five, Trent Murphy is looking much more athletic than last year.

Chase Roullier was the starting center today and did a good job.

Josh Holsey had a rough day and allowed many passes to be caught, especially in the end zone.

Brian Quick looked very good against the second string defensive unit.

The defense is picking up the pace and they are increasing their stunts on the defensive line.

Trent Williams absolutely mauled Junior Galette on one play and proceeded to maul Preston Smith on the very next play. Big Trent rode them out and buried both in ground.

DeAngelo Hall demonstrated that his injured achilles is nearly 100% healed. He jumped unto a padded gym box that stands nearly four and a half feet several times and then topped it off with a back flip.

In fade route drills, Josh Doctson hauled in touchdowns against a very confused Bashaud Breeland and Quinton Dunbar.

A nice moment to close the day. Niles Paul and Terrelle Pryor work at the jugs machine after practice and had several kids help with placement and retrieval of footballs.

Wednesday Notes

Jordan Reed is going to see a specialist in North Carolina regarding his toe. Team officials and coaches wonder if this could be a long term problem.

As talk of a new stadium continues, fans are divided on whether it should be located in Virginia or Maryland. BBQ thinks it will be Virginia as politicians in the commonwealth seem to favor it more than politicians in Maryland.

The fade routes will be a given in 2017. The offense has been spending a great deal of time in camp on the fade route plays.

Stacy McGee has added considerable bulk and muscle to his frame. He now goes 6-3, 355 (estimated) and could be a solid anchor at DT.

Purple cows eat purple grass.

Although the running back core of Kelley, Perine, and Thompson seems to be set, RB4 could actually come down to a competition between Mack Brown and Matt Jones. BBQ gives Brown the edge.

Matt Jones is not participating in any special team drills (coaching decision) and this could be a main reason for being left off the roster next month. A trade could happen, but not too likely.

It is now becoming obvious that the Redskins got a huge steal in the first round of the 2017 draft. Jonathan Allen continues to impress and the latest praise comes from none other than Trent Williams.

D.J. Swearinger looks like he has a nickname from his teammates: "Swag in the Back".

BBQ highly recommends that you take everything that Chris Cooley says with a grain of salt. It's nice that he praises all of the players, but most of it is "stretching the truth."

Jamison Crowder was back on the field today and fielded some punts.

For the first time ever, the Redskins will use the BLESTO scouting service. It should help them with scouting college players in each draft. The annual dues for this service is more than $100,000 a year.

Fabian Moreau practiced with the special teams today. He looked smooth, fast, and healthy.

Cooley talks both sides out of his mouth. I give little credence to anything he says.

Hey BB, a couple local reporters have commented on an improved, stronger Matt Ioannidis. This would be most welcome news.

Have your little birds reported such?

Thursday Notes

Ryan Anderson says that practices at Alabama were harder and tougher than practices with the Redskins.

Sheldon Richardson said that the Redskins pursued a trade for him. The Redskins would've given up the second fourth round selection they had in the 2017 draft, but Richardson did not want to lower his salary - a condition for any such trade that the Redskins wanted.

Two days later and everyone can't stop talking about the one handed catch Terrelle Pryor made in the end zone on a fade route. Even Pro Football Talk had an article about it.

One player who BBQ mocked extensively in the first round this year was injured recently in an ATV accident. He reported to the Seahawks camp and was promptly put on the NFI list.

Martrell Spaight has a hamstring injury and was held out of practice today.

Jay Gruden tells Kirk Cousins that he can faithfully rely on Josh Doctson to get highly placed footballs in the end zone. Docston's leaping ability appears to be intact after last season's injury.

Another day, another Terelle Pryor moment. He was completely smothered by Quinton Dunbar on a post pattern to the end zone, but Pryor somehow made the catch look routine. Another moment: Faking out Breeland in an uncanny fashion.

The Redskins released two safeties (camp fodder) and signed two safeties (camp fodder).

The team has released Lou Young from injured reserve with an injury settlement.

Ryan Grant made a spectacular one handed catch on a thirty yard post pattern into the end zone against Josh Norman, but he was slightly out of bounds.

Bashaud Breeland had his first decent day of camp and was able to swat away several passes to various players.

A training camp moment: Fan yells that Pryor "was wide open Mr. 24 million." Next play Cousin Kirk hit Pryor deep. Kirk came to the sideline and traded a high five with the fan.

Josh Doctson caught a pass in the end zone and then proceeded to flip the ball off of Nico Marley's helmet. Tempers flared. Shortly after, Niles Paul did a little bit of trash talking with the defensive secondary.

On the last play of the day, Junior Galette beat RT Morgan Moses and hit Cousin Kirk. This resulted in Zach Brown deflecting the football and Josh Norman intercepting it.

On the Ryan Anderson quote, I wonder how much of that can be said of all pro practices given the rules they are under now.

Ax, you at camp ?

I was noting this 3 months ago :)

Backup NT probably gonna be Ionnaidis. He's had a good offseason of workouts, and I think he sticks around one more year at least.
