Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2016 (Continual Updates)

Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2016 (Continual Updates)

The new NFL season arrived last week and the Redskins have seen some changes in free agency. We’ll continue to update this BBQ thread as new players are signed and others depart. Today we shift our focus to the upcoming draft. In the coming weeks we will have mocks that focus on no trades, trades, and are BGO member centric. We’ll even feature two or three mocks that are extraordinary. Scot McCloughan has said he would like to get fifteen picks if at all possible. BBQ thinks that is unrealistic, but we will delve into the unusual for the fun of it.

Feel free to offer your own ideas about the draft, free agency, team cuts, and anything else related to these subjects. Too, we’d like to see your mocks if you are so inclined.

Without any further delays, let’s take a look at the latest mock for 2016.

Round One: Vernon Butler, DT/DE, Louisiana Tech
Simply put, he is strong and able to do the following: bull rush, hold the offensive lineman from making plays, sack the quarterback, generate a consistent pass rush, and contain running backs – often for a loss. The CUSA product’s motor is constantly running and does not stop. A high character person and his focus is always in the right place.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltL6872vGzs
Other Possible Targets:
A’Shawn Robinson, DE/DT, Alabama
Andrew Billings, DT, Baylor
Reggie Ragland, ILB, Alabama
Jarran Reed, DT, Alabama
Sheldon Rankins, DT/DE, Louisville
Laquon Treadwell, WR, Mississippi

Round Two: William Jackson, CB, Houston
Here is a little secret. BBQ believes that Jackson could be the best corner prospect in this draft and would be a huge steal for the Redskins. The AAC standout has started to move up according to the pundits and he now receives a second round grade. Any higher? Not sure. Jackson has the overwhelming size that more teams covet. Very physical, but needs to be aware of personal foul penalties at the next level. Breaks quicker on the ball than any other corner that BBQ has seen in the last three drafts. Excellent closing speed. Totally frustrates quarterbacks and receivers alike.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ed52KLps6U
Other Possible Targets:
Jeremy Cash, SS, Duke
Kendall Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
Jonathan Bullard, DE, Florida
Tyler Boyd, WR, Pittsburgh
Will Fuller, WR, Notre Dame
Derrick Henry, RB, Alabama

Round Three: Chris Jones, DE, Mississippi St.
With a calm and cool demeanor, Chris Jones quietly goes about his business and does it quite effectively. However, he is a powerhouse on the field. A team leader by example. Played beside Preston Smith in many defensive formations for the SEC power. In a draft that is extremely deep with defensive linemen, Jones would likely project to a late first or early second round choice in other years. Here is a video of the person who makes up the good football player.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tsLaDuSOKk
Other Possible Targets:
Darian Thompson, FS, Boise St.
Cyrus Jones, CB, Alabama
Shawn Oakman, DE, Baylor
Charles Tapper, DE, Oklahoma
Rashard Higgins, WR, Colorado St.
Nick Martin, C, Notre Dame

Round Four: Jordan Howard, RB, Indiana
Indiana is known as a basketball mecca and the football team is something of an afterthought. The Hoosiers have seen some good fortunes on the gridiron last few years and Howard is a big reason for that buzz. Even with Tevin Coleman (now with the Atlanta Falcons), his backfield running mate last year, Howard was a running machine and still rushed for more than 1,500 yards. He is overlooked because of being in a lower tier program within the Big Ten, but has the size and strength to excel at the next level.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otzk5QUSjAY
Other Possible Targets:
Aaron Burbridge, WR, Michigan St.
Keyarris Garrett, WR, Tulsa
Hassan Ridgeway, DT, Texas
Sean Davis, FS, Maryland
Bronson Kaufusi, DE, BYU
Kyler Fackrell, OLB, Utah St.

Round Five: Matt Ioannidis, DE, Temple
Ioannidis had a special season for the Owls, but he is a bit overlooked due to playing for a perennial doormat of the AAC. Not this past year – Temple had a great season and Matt Ioannidis was a big factor in that success. He has excellent size to go with a great attitude and possesses a tenacious motor. The first team all-conference standout added about twenty pounds of bulk and muscle in recent weeks. He can slide inside for certain defensive formations. Ioannidis could quickly be a rotational player and possibly a starter within a year or two.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUY9y8vCW-w
Other Possible Targets:
Graham Glasgow, C/G, Michigan
Blake Martinez, ILB, Stanford
Jayron Kearse, FS, Clemson
Jonathan Williams, RB, Arkansas
Tajae Sharpe, WR, Massachusetts
Jihad Ward, DE, Illinois

Round Six: Tyvis Powell, FS, Ohio St.
Did Tyvis Powell declare for the draft one year earlier than expected? Yes. Was it too soon? Likely so. Advantage Redskins. He would be a better prospect in the 2017 draft, but decided to enter this year. He would need a year of sitting on the bench and playing special teams, then could be ready to take on the role of starting free safety. He has the size that teams covet these days. Physical player. Powell covers the field with ease and was the team MVP in the national championship game for the Big Ten’s Buckeyes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Am1yWv_3wlk
Other Possible Targets:
Kevin Hogan, QB, Stanford
Deiondre Hall, CB, Northern Iowa
Jared Norris, ILB, Utah
D.J. Reader, DT, Clemson
Nick Kwiatkoski, ILB, West Virginia
Maurice Canady, CB, Virginia

Round Seven: Nate Sudfeld, QB, Indiana
The Redskins take another Hoosier in round seven, a project with some decent upside at the quarterback position. The fundamentally sound Sudfeld had a good senior season with nearly 3,200 yards passing. He tossed twenty-four touchdowns and just five interceptions. The numbers were twenty-one and nine for his junior campaign. He would obviously be a candidate for third string, but could quickly become a reliable backup within a year or two. The one negative would be that the 6’5”, 240 lb. Sudfeld floats his long passes a bit too much – something that should be easily corrected.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UG6y2yLcnA
Other Possible Targets:
Joe Thuney, G, N.C. St.
Jeff Driskel, QB, Louisiana Tech
Ian Seau, OLB, Nevada
Terrance Smith, ILB, Florida St.
De’Runnya Wilson, WR, Mississippi St.
Elijah Shumate, SS, Notre Dame

Round Seven: Clayton Fejedelem, FS, Illinois
Are you looking for a seventh round steal? Are you looking for a seventh rounder who could start or play many minutes in a reserve role two or three years from now? Are you looking for a special teams player that is able to contribute immediately? Are you looking for a diamond in the rough? Look no further. Clayton Fejedelem is an aggressive free safety who led the Big Ten in tackles last year. He was solid in the Illini’s pro day and had a great East-West Shrine game. Fejedelem has constantly silenced his critics and continues to do so. So yes, he would be a seventh round steal.

There is your latest mock for 2016 and prospect lists. The draft is just weeks away. We’ll post who the Redskins contact during team pro days, visits, and who they work out privately. See you as we go along.

Connor Cook, QB, Michigan St. - NFLC

I've seen Connor projected as a 3rd rounder. You think we'll draft a QB even close to that round number ?
It's hard to imagine us using a draft pick on a QB, any higher than a 6th this year.
And I wouldn't want to sign him as an UDFA either ; The painful memories are just still too fresh, from when just last year we signed an UDFA Quarterback named "Connor" and then the unthinkable happened.

The latest mock has been updated. I used an older template. Apologies.

You never know about those UDFA quarterbacks. Chase Daniel was here in Washington as an 'extra arm' one offseason.

Now, there was a fight the past couple of weeks to secure his services in Philly vs. KC.

A slight update from McLovin. He now says he wants to turn our 8 current picks into 12.

He also sounds like he might be leaning a little toward the defensive side of the ball--at least in FA.

“Like I did last year, and I’m going to keep trying to do, especially in free agency, is bring guys from organizations that have won in defenses that have been very strong, very powerful – and offense, too – but it’s just bringing guys in that have seen it,” McCloughan said. “They know what it looks like. They know how to practice, they know how to take notes, they know how to lift weights – they understand, 'This is what we have to do to be successful.’”

Scot McCloughan: ?I Want 12? Draft Picks

One thing that's clear, is in the 7th round, we need to take LaQuan McGowan.

Could be the blocking TE we've been asking for...

img_Pmg5r2.jpg

I don't know whether he can play but Marcel Jensen is something like 6'5 and 269 as a TE. We signed him to a futures deal in December. Hopefully our OL and TE coaches can mold him into a blocking ram at the LOS.

Just doing due diligence on a player. If he drops to the sixth round, I could see Scot pulling the trigger. Otherwise, we probably take a developmental QB in the seventh round.

Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2016 (Continual Updates)

We hope you are having a good day. There is a change in the BBQ mocks. There will be no more mocks that feature zero trades. Scot McCloughan has stated his desire to obtain more picks and that is how BBQ will structure future mocks. We have a further explanation below.

Today we bring you the latest mock from BBQ. This mock features trades and other exciting information. In the coming weeks we will have mocks that focus on trades, multiple trades, and two mocks that are BGO member centric.

Feel free to offer your own ideas about the draft, free agency, team cuts, and anything else related to these subjects. Too, we’d like to see your mocks if you are so inclined.

Without any further delays, let’s take a look at the latest mock for 2016.

Round One: Trade
The Broncos watch as a coveted quarterback falls in the first round. They broker a trade with the Redskins and move their first, second, fifth, and seventh rounders to the Redskins for the opportunity to select twenty-first overall.

Other Possible Targets:
Jeremy Cash, SS, Duke
Kendall Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
Jonathan Bullard, DE, Florida
Tyler Boyd, WR, Pittsburgh
Will Fuller, WR, Notre Dame
Derrick Henry, RB, Alabama

Round Two: Ryan Kelly, C, Alabama
Alabama’s national championship team is likely to send many talented players to the NFL and Ryan Kelly is another of those prospects. Provided leadership and opened up huge lanes for the Crimson Tide’s formidable running game. Excelled against strong SEC and national competition. Good in pass protection, but could be a bit more polished. He will need to add about ten pounds of bulk to his tall frame, but that should not be an issue.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6fbGqi8oIw

Round Three: Chris Jones, DE, Mississippi St.
With a calm and cool demeanor, Chris Jones quietly goes about his business and does it quite effectively. However, he is a powerhouse on the field. A team leader by example. Played beside Preston Smith in many defensive formations for the SEC power. In a draft that is extremely deep with defensive linemen, Jones would likely project to a late first or early second round choice in other years. He does have an off-field issue (March, 2016) – driving with a suspended license and this could affect his stock in the draft just a bit. Here is a video of the person who makes up the good football player.

Keyarris Garrett, WR, Tulsa
Hassan Ridgeway, DT, Texas
Denver Kirkland, OG, Arkansas
Bronson Kaufusi, DE, BYU
Kyler Fackrell, OLB, Utah St.

Round Five: Blake Martinez, ILB, Stanford
Martinez is a relentless baller who plays intelligently and within his skillset. The PAC-12 first teamer, a captain for the Cardinal, is a leader on and off the field. He is solid in the passing and rushing defense and has a great nose for the ball. Seems to be around most plays and creates a disruptive force against offenses. Well regarded and respected by opposing coaches and players. A solid core player who would be exceptional on special teams.

Other Possible Targets:
Graham Glasgow, C/G, Michigan
DeAndre Houston-Carson, FS, William & Mary
Jayron Kearse, FS, Clemson

Round Seven: Ian Seau, OLB, Nevada
He has a famous last name. Yes, the Mountain West product is a nephew of the late Junior Seau and like his famous uncle, Ian plays linebacker. He may not have the overall talent of his well known relative, but Ian Seau is a good football player. His specialty is rushing the passer. He would be an extra body on the field during passing downs and would need to make the roster as a special teamer as well. He lacks speed, but makes up for it with determination and toughness.

Hail To The Redskins!

Since the draft is just weeks away, I thought I'd mention that the 2016 edition of the NFL Draft is up and running at: first-pick.com

You are the GM and you pick the players for your team. It's free registration and it's fun!

It's also a great way to get to know all the players in the draft.

Enjoy!

I am just getting started in looking at the draft prospects, but the sheer number of DL that appear on the list of players to watch is amazing.

I recall some years where there were perhaps 2-3 DL prospects that could be projected to the first round, this year there are half a dozen or more.

No wonder we moved on from Knighton (30) and Hatcher (34).

BB, it seems like your second round pick is getting noticed by some of the smartest guys out there.

William Jackson III is best coverage corner in draft. Let me just say that.

It appears that way. I'm sure that more adjustments to the mocks are to be expected.

Today we bring you a bonus mock. Only one was scheduled for this week, but today is a holiday and BBQ wanted to bring you more information and a preview of coming changes. Starting next week we will present two mocks a week. The frequency will increase as we get closer to the draft.

Round One: A’Shawn Robinson, DE/DT, Alabama
One of the best defensive linemen to ever play for the perennial national title contender. A force for the SEC’s Crimson Tide. He can play inside or slide outside as a 3-4 end. A run stuffer. A pass rusher. Great attitude. A dominating force who can overwhelm an offensive line. Robinson is everything you could want in a defensive lineman and more.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BR7EyecqwM
Other Possible Targets:
Vernon Butler, DT/DE, Louisiana Tech
Andrew Billings, DT, Baylor
Reggie Ragland, ILB, Alabama
Jarran Reed, DT, Alabama
Sheldon Rankins, DT/DE, Louisville
Laquon Treadwell, WR, Mississippi

Round Two: Trade
The Redskins trade down to an early third round pick along with an extra fourth and sixth.

Round Three: Rashard Higgins, WR, Colorado St.
Higgins is a highly productive receiver who posted monstrous numbers for the Mountain West program. Fantastic numbers two seasons ago, but production was a bit down this last season. The QB and head coach from two years ago went to the NFL and another program respectively and this accounts for the lower numbers. Still had an impressive 2015 by any standard. Goes by the nickname “Hollywood”. Holds school records for TDs and receptions. Runs excellent routes and is able to get separation from defenders on a consistent basis. Overflows with confidence.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpjRhP2q26k
Other Possible Targets:
Darian Thompson, FS, Boise St.
Cyrus Jones, CB, Alabama
Shawn Oakman, DE, Baylor
Charles Tapper, DE, Oklahoma
Sebastian Tretola, OG, Arkansas
Nick Martin, C, Notre Dame

Round Three: Chris Jones, DE, Mississippi St.
With a calm and cool demeanor, Chris Jones quietly goes about his business and does it quite effectively. However, he is a powerhouse on the field. A team leader by example. Played beside Preston Smith in many defensive formations for the SEC power. In a draft that is extremely deep with defensive linemen, Jones would likely project to a late first or early second round choice in other years.

Other Possible Targets:
Sean Davis, FS, Maryland
Keyarris Garrett, WR, Tulsa
Hassan Ridgeway, DT, Texas
Denver Kirkland, OG, Arkansas
Bronson Kaufusi, DE, BYU
Kyler Fackrell, OLB, Utah St.

Round Four: Hassan Ridgeway, DT, Texas
The All Big12 performer is like the blue collar worker who packs his lunch and comes to work with a positive attitude. There is nothing flashy about him other than dependability and reliability. He can occupy blockers at the line and apply pressure in the running and passing games. Ridgeway will likely add about fifteen pounds of bulk to his sturdy frame. For his size, the Longhorn is deceptively quick on his feet. Pretty much an unmovable object on the field.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93CbXKt7roY

Round Five: Trade
The Redskins trade down a few positions and pick up an extra seventh rounder.

Round Five: Graham Glasgow, C/G, Michigan
Glasgow is an intriguing prospect who can play either left guard or center with superb effectiveness. He would likely be a third rounder (possibly second) if it wasn’t for a DUI conviction and a team suspension for similar behavior. In the past year, the Big Ten mauler has become a model citizen and had a great year on the gridiron. He more than held his own at the Senior Bowl as he handled elite defenders who will do well at the next level.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otzk5QUSjAY
Other Possible Targets:
Blake Martinez, ILB, Stanford
DeAndre Houston-Carson, FS, William & Mary
Jayron Kearse, FS, Clemson
Jonathan Williams, RB, Arkansas
Tajae Sharpe, WR, Massachusetts
Matt Ioannidis, DE, Temple

Round Six: Tyvis Powell, FS, Ohio St.
Did Tyvis Powell declare for the draft one year earlier than expected? Yes. Was it too soon? Likely so. Advantage Redskins. He would be a better prospect in the 2017 draft, but decided to enter this year. He would need a year of sitting on the bench and playing special teams, then could be ready to take on the role of starting free safety. He has the size that teams covet these days. Physical player. Powell covers the field with ease and was the team MVP in the national championship game for the Big Ten’s Buckeyes.

Other Possible Targets:
Kevin Hogan, QB, Stanford
Deiondre Hall, CB, Northern Iowa
Justin Burris, CB, N.C. State
D.J. Reader, DT, Clemson
Nick Kwiatkoski, ILB, West Virginia
Maurice Canady, CB, Virginia

Round Six: Jared Norris, ILB, Utah
Norris has been a good linebacker for the Utes during his career in the PAC12. He has good skills in the running game, but needs to work a bit on his pass defense. A true tackling machine that doesn’t get as much attention as his counterparts at more notable conference schools. A true team leader. Has the intangibles to be a good special teams player.

Other Possible Targets:
Joe Thuney, G, N.C. St.
Jeff Driskel, QB, Louisiana Tech
Cassanova McKinzy, ILB, Auburn

I still think there might be a chance the Redskins can parlay that #21 pick into an early #2 and a late #2 or early #3 from a team that falls in love with someone and wants to move up.

This type of move becomes more plausible if the team is indeed targeting DL help because of the depth among the prospects coming out.

Tried my hand at "fixing" the Redskins over at first-pick.com.

After two trade downs, here's what I came up with:

Round 1 Pick 30 (CAR): A'Shawn Robinson, DT/DE, Alabama (A+)
Round 2 Pick 26 (G.B.): Vernon Butler, DT, Louisiana Tech (A+)
Round 2 Pick 31 (CAR): Nick Martin, C/OG, Notre Dame (A)
Round 3 Pick 21: Chris Jones, DT/DE, Mississippi State (A+)
Round 3 Pick 25 (G.B.): Jordan Howard, RB, Indiana (A+)
Round 4 Pick 22: Aaron Burbridge, WR, Michigan State (A)
Round 5 Pick 19: Rashard Robinson, CB, LSU (A+)
Round 6 Pick 12: Charone Peake, WR, Clemson (A+)
Round 7 Pick 11: Wendell Smallwood, RB, West Virginia (A+)
Round 7 Pick 21: KeiVarae Russell, CB, Notre Dame (A)
