Official Game Thread - Preseason Week 1 - Dolphins @ Commanders

If Mariota is going to miss a lot of time, I'd personally want to get a veteran QB besides Kaliakmanis. Preferably someone with past experience in a system that Blough considers most like his own. Doesn't mean he'd make the final 53, but more likely to be helpful to the team in the longrun than Hartman on cleanup duty and nobody but Kaliakmanis to rely on.

The only FA QBs listed on Spotrac are:
Russell Wilson (but he's going to broadcasting)
Jimmy Garoppolo
Brett Rypien
John Wolford
Jeff Driskel

Sharp Football Analysis has a list as of 2 days ago:
Jimmy Garoppolo
Jeff Driskel
John Wolford
Brett Rypien
Clayton Tune
Dorian Thompson-Robinson
Tim Boyle
Jake Haener
Desmond Ridder
Diego Pavia
Trevor Siemian

That's all I could find doing some half assed internet research.

Anybody there tickle your fancy? Driskel would be the obvious choice because he's been here. Could I interest you in Desmond Ridder? Maybe a side of Trevor Siemian?

There's just nobody out there. If we wanted another veteran backup QB, we probably would have to trade for him.

Looks like slim pickings, but of the available guys, maybe Jeff Driskel if you want familiarity, Jimmy Garrapolo if you want experience?

If nothing else, yeah, I'd kick the tires on Driskel again. Anything but Hartman.

We need to see what Mariota's situation is. I'd probably take Driskel as another backup option, but candidly, in any of those scenarios, if Daniels goes down, it's

Guessing the coaches are more interested in him getting time live wearing the green dot, but I don’t love that it looks like he’s playing at 3/4 speed on a lot of these snaps. Almost easier to get hurt that way trying to preserve yourself than just going 100%.

I’ve already heard how fast and natural he looks in practice so I’m not worried, but I’ll be honest if this tweet was the first I’d seen or heard of Styles since being drafted I’d be a little worried by what’s in that video.

Yeah, hopefully Mariota is okay, he is a good backup option, which we especially need.

You’re pretty much screwed by the time you’re on QB3 regardless, but I would probably prefer to go with a developmental guy like Kaliakmanis if it comes to that.

People keep bringing up Driskel. That QB is so Kliff Kingsbury.

But seriously, Driskell looked good in Kliff's system. I'm not sure how good he is in other systems. One would would think not very since he's available and it's mid-August.

Look up at the list I posted above.

I think the reason people bring up Driskel is because he’s the only guy available who anybody had heard of outside of Jimmy G.

The pickings are slim if they want to bring in a vet.

There's always trying that guy who was a backup for the Chargers and Falcons.........

I hope that Marcus heals quickly and is the #2.

But remember, he was 2-6 last year.

Lost in the injury.....Mariota's first pass attempt looked awful. Looked like he shotputted the ball. Floated it toward a wide open receiver but way short. Mariota may no longer be the ideal backup either.

Everything else aside, I do think there’s a high probability this is his final year as our #2. Developing a cheap young backup QB will be necessary for when Jayden gets paid anyways.

I think I remember reading that Mariotta has looked pretty bad in practice so far. Holding the ball too long, checking down too often, etc. I wonder if he's struggling in this system?

The Sonny Styles clip made it clear none of the players there were playing the scheme they were all training camp. That opening drive Miami had is not indicative of how that would go with the same personnel in the regular season.
