The All Things Offensive Line Thread

Just a follow up post that tells a bit about the money decker would ask for

In the three games, Coleman filled in for Laremy post-injury last year. Brandon gave up zero sacks and only two pressures. Kind of jibes with what I remember both last year and how he was actually pretty good in his rookie season. Played against the Giants (good D Line), Dallas, and Philly.

Unless Jim Lachey has found a flux capacitor, there's no reason anybody should be at LT besides Coleman. He performed damn well in 2024 and looked great spelling Tunsil last season.

Regarding Biadasz, I’m fine with releasing him. I just never thought he was remotely as good as his reputation.

So I don’t really want him back. Certainly not for the money he was making.

But we needed better depth at center no matter what.

I don’t remember you saying this before the organization’s move to cut him out of nowhere though. Feels like we all mostly didn’t think Biadasz was anything special but we also thought we had C covered for now and were surprised when a hole at the position was opened, given all our other holes and the fact that the OL finally felt like it was approaching “complete”. Feels revisionist to say that he was always a problem that needed to be solved, now. That’s the narrative since they decided to save $4M in cash to cut him or whatever it was. Not a peep before that.

I didnt say they should cut him. But I did comment fairly often that it was irritating he was always on the injury list. And he got pushed around in the run game. I’d point that out on game day threads when I noticed it.

I frankly didn’t think they ever would cut him. And I never said i advocated for it.

I just didn’t think he was that good, and when they did cut him, it didn’t bother me near as much as others. I think I posted that near immediately after he was cut that I didn’t think it was that big a deal.

I’ve also been very critical about not bringing in competition for Allegretti after they swung and missed on Lindy. JGG and a 6th round rookie isn’t good enough.

I don’t think it’s revisionist to say that I really never had the abject panic about this move as others did from the moment it happened. Same with WR.

Where I always was panicked was CB. And still am.

Okay, well not to be an investigative reporter about it, but this just didn’t sound right to me…

You’re right that you didn’t think they would cut him, you found the idea outright shocking and crazy after the season ended:

But the tone of this post really makes it seem like you think it’s crazy because he was a good center for us

You did eventually go on to make various mentions of his injuries, but not until after we cut him and we were all searching for reasons why. I’m not saying you didn’t feel that way privately, you just never posted about it during the 2025 season. I didn’t go back further than the 2024 NFCCG because I’m not a total psycho, but it was not something you were bringing up about him in 2025 during the season or that previous offseason, at least. I don’t remember people here really feeling that way which is why I questioned it.

Now hey for all I know other people were posting it and you were hitting that “like” button like crazy which wouldn’t show up in a search. Or you spelled his name wrong a few times or something. I’m not calling you a liar. I’m simply saying that we tend to internalize narratives that explain something for us after the fact, that we didn’t actually believe or think of at the time. I think your post history from before Biadasz was cut shows (as would mine) that you thought he was a good-to-very-good Center for this team and that it would be crazy to cut him and create a hole that wasn’t there before.

I still feel that way, personally. Although if the coaches thought he couldn’t make the line calls for Blough’s offense because behind the scenes they know he’s a big old dummy, that’s fine. Nobody thought that before the cut, but it’s a realistic explanation if still hard to believe given how functional of a starter he was for the Cowboys and for Kliff’s offense.

And I will acknowledge that you’re right that you didn’t have any panicky posts about the cut when it happened, you more so immediately started looking for reasons that made sense to you. Which makes sense if you trust this FO more than some of us do. And you have been consistent that they didn’t do enough to add to Allegretti at the position.

I’m usually on the side of defending AP, but I don’t see how there’s any question that Badass should’ve been retained, whether as a backup or competing with Allegretti for the starting spot. Makes no sense to help out another team by letting him go unless we needed the cap space, which we clearly didn’t/don’t. We are taking an $8 million cap him on him so he can start at center for the Chargers. Absurd!

That said though, I don’t see how having him around now or not now would help us with the left tackle situation. I suppose you could make a loose connection as far as overall OL depth, but to me it’s two different positions and we are better off signing one of the available veteran LT’s. Hopefully AP can extract a few million dollars from our tightfisted owners and get that done.

Colemam was playing LG, so moving him back to tackle thins the interior line depth, and Biadasz could have helped that.

Sure, a little bit I guess, but that’s a lot of shuffling things around. I think they should just sign an available tackle (or guard) for depth and maybe one day we’ll get a viable explanation for the inexplicable release of Biadasz.

With Biadasz as the center, Allegretti was a backup for both guard and center. Coleman effectively backed up both guard and offensive tackle. By forcing our solid backup into being a doubtful starter and cutting the original starter, the Commanders lost depth at two positions. Coleman being a starter loses our second backup guard, which was unavoidable. Wylie himself is mediocre, but at least can play both guard and tackle. We really have one "reliable" backup for the entire offensive line. Hopefully the others show promise.

My question moving forward as a result of the Tunsil injury is where does the leadership within the OL come from now? In training camp, it really seemed like Tunsil was making it a point of emphasis to take Conerly under his wing. I was (and still am) expecting Josh to have a huge second year as a pro, but Tunsil’s injury hurts more than just between the lines on Sundays. We really need Cosmi to stay healthy and take charge within the OL group moving forward.

If we proceed past the fact they let Biadasz go, then they tried to get Lindy, and failed, they came up with another plan for the OL:

The plan was the loser of the Coleman/Paul battle would be the primary backup for both guard spots, Wylie was the primary backup for both tackle spots, and there would be some backup center, either JGG or Gublin. If Paul won the guard spot, then they could alter and say that Coleman was the left side primary backup and Wylie the right side primary backup, because both can play guard and tackle. And there would be a backup center to backup Allegretti. Apart from they did a pathetic job getting a backup center, that plan made sense. You typically carry 10 OL, so originally you had Tunsil, Coleman/Paul, Allegretti, Cosmi, Conerly, Wylie, Gublin, and that's 8. So they could carry one or two more backups in addition to those 8. One of which being the primary center backup, whoever that is,.

The problem is our starting LT is probably out for the season, and that blows up the original plan because now Coleman slides to LT, and Paul wins the battle for LG by default,, so we no longer have the loser of that battle as the primary backup guard. Tunsil is going to go to IR, which means the original 8 is now down to 7. So they will definitely have 2-3 more slots on the OL to start the season. Who they exactly are, I'm not sure. I think one is going to be a veteran backup Center. Probably another is another backup guard, but whether that person is on the roster now or not, who's to say.

If it's "off the field" leadership, Tunsil is going to be around. I don't think it changes much. I would expect to see Tunsil still working with Conerly as he rehabs.

If it's on the field, they love Allegretti's communication. And Cosmi is a leader by example.

Depending on the money, I think I’d still strongly consider signing Decker. Not as an indictment of Coleman, but rather because it allows him to go back to competing for guard (while also backing up LT). We could really use a step forward on the IOL, and Coleman’s our best chance at that. As others have mentioned (including myself), losing Tunsil wasn’t just a hit to our LT spot, but also our depth.

In theory, we’d be looking at…
LT - Decker (Coleman
LG - Coleman (Paul)
C - Allegretti (who knows)
RG - Cosmi (Wiley)
RT - Conerly (Wiley)
Utility guy - Trent Scott

That’s a decent 8 IMO, with a solid blend of quality, experience and potential. I’d feel pretty good about the starters and backups, aside from center. Speaking of which, hopefully they look at cut-downs and even trade options for a better backup center, ideally one that could possibly challenge Allegretti once they get the scheme down.

Yeah, I’m good with this. If not Decker or another tackle, sign an IOL. I would’ve hoped an unexpected injury like this is a big reason why they are keeping so much unused cap room around. Use it!!!

Does anyone know where we can find a list of interior OL free agents remaining?

Issue is that reports about Conerly haven't been particularly glowing.. so now you have a liability at LT, at RT and possibly Center. Normally you'd have help on the weakest side.. now we likely need help on both. Teams with 2 good (not even great) pass rushers will have their way with this Oline.
I still prefer to give Coleman a shot at LT first.. and only if he is getting spanked look at available options at LT. I see FO bringing 2 OLs after cuts... i am sure someone decent will become available.

I'm really not ready to panic about the OL yet. I think what's clear is our backup center status is basically non-functional. They need to get another guy who can start.

I'd like to see what the line looks like, especially in run-blocking, once Allegretti is back. And maybe after Coleman and Paul have a little more time to work together.

The backup center spot is a huge, enormous concern.

I don't think we're going to have any more real information until the Ravens joint practice, assuming Allegretti is back for that.

Personally, I think Coleman, Paul, Allegretti, Cosmi and Conerly can be absolutely good enough.

My only slight concern is Conerly doesn't seem to be as far along as I had hoped after he spent the entire off-season with Tunsil.
