I think Harris can change the name too, but I think the real question is "is there any benefit to reopening this can of worms?" I don't think there is. No matter what the diehards who loved the old name feel, having more name changes than Super Bowl wins would return this team to being the punchline to embarrassing jokes that drive away new fans the team so desperately wants. And that's without considering the fact that there will still be no name that everyone agrees on.
The name change was a scar. That scar will never fully heal. Fans can keep picking at the scar, or they can let it heal as much as it can and be done with it. It will never be pretty, it will never be as good as the untouched name. But I have come to terms with the team not having a name I wanted.
I agree. There is also only one name that people want, and that's Redskins, and the league has decided that isn't coming back. Like ever unless there is a huge and enormous change in perception that hasn't happened yet.
Every other name has issues. Warriors might have been most accepted. And hell, you could maybe even use the old logo, but they aren't going to get Warriors with an NBA team already using the name. I get that there are 2 teams named Giants and 2 teams named Cardinals (which is REALLY odd, a dainty red bird has 2 professional teams named after it?) but those teams were named generations ago and we're living in a different time. The trademarking and copyright stuff would be really hard at this point to go with Warriors.
I lot of folks would love the Red Wolves. But it's far from unanimous. I hate it.
Direct military stuff, some people like, some don't.
The thing about the city, like the Monuments, or Presidents, or Senators, or whatever. I mean, they all kindof suck.
Do we want another big cat to go along with Panthers, Lions and Tigers (Bengals?) Cheetahs perhaps? Or could I interest you in the Washington Leopards?
Do we want another big animal to go along with Rams, Broncos, Colts, Dolphins (really?), Bears? Maybe Whales? Elephants? Rhinos?
What about, wait for it, A BIRD! We already have Eagles, Falcons, Cardinals, Sea Hawks and Ravens. That's 5 teams after birds. Let's ponder a Condor? Or a vulture? Or maybe a parrot or parakeet! Wait! We could be tweety bird!
I mean, there just isn't anything anybody is going to get excited about, except some really liked Red Wolves.
So I agree with you, why in God's name would you reopen this can of worms with no obvious viable answer. Does Commanders suck? Yes. Would something else suck less? Probably. But if you don't go with Red Wolves, then the Red Wolves people will still be bitter. And everything else is going to be meh, and hard to get excited about.
To me, the only two options would be to go back to Washington Football Team, of Washington Football Club, or something like that, or Red Wolves. I desperately hate the Red Wolves. And I might never go to a game if they started playing howling sounds when we scored. Bletch. Also bah humbug, get off my lawn and cancel Christmas!
I personally don't like the idea of going back to WFT, but I do like it more than Red Wolves. I might like both more than Commanders. But to me it would be going from like a F to D-. But that's me. I know others violently disagree.
