Great Movies That Others Might Enjoy, Or Ones To Avoid

Wife and I saw Disclosure Day on Thursday.
I very much enjoyed it, my wife was meh on it. Both of us agreed we thought it was a little too long.
I think a lot of the people naysaying were expecting an action movie with aliens, à la Independence Day. There’s a scene in the trailer with a UFO coming out of a cloud which kind of implies it. But that scene is very much taken out of context. It’s actually an interesting discussion around empathy, belief, and faith, so in that respect I think some people thought it was slow or boring in parts. That said, there are some nice action set pieces.

The one thing that bugged me…
Emily Blunt driving an Alfa Romeo that didn’t break down or fall apart under duress! 😂

Actually as an addition…

I think a bunch of people went into this expecting Close Encounters or War of the Worlds, both Spielberg alien movies.
But if there’s a comparison in his back catalogue, then this is probably closer to Minority Report (I love that movie!!)
They have similar structures, essentially being chase movies, and Disclosure Day even has a similar ‘gimmick’ to get the protagonists out of trouble when they need it.

Finally got to watch Project Hail Mary. I had read the book first, and think they did a fantastic job with producing the movie. I normally do it the other way, movie first, then the book if I like the movie. I think it's difficult to take a very detailed sci-fy, and covey the in a way it's entertaining, understandable, and not go to far off track from the original story. Gosling was a perfect choice IMHO. He can do the serious stuff, but he has a natural goofy quality and a way of reacting to situations that this role needed. I don't think Damon could have pulled it off as well, yet was perfect for the Martian.

The Outsider on Netflix it's about Japanese Mafia with an American who integrates. Highly recommended

Loved the book. My wife said if she hadn't read the book, she wouldn't have been able to follow the movie. I don't agree with her being she doesn't actually sit and watch a movie without her phone in her face doing something.

The book was great. However, like The Martian”, you need to have your science cap on when reading.📖 😃

I really loved the movie. I have not read the book. I thought what they were able to do with practical effects to make Rocky (not that Rocky) come to life was absolutely astounding. And since Rocky was a puppet, it really helped Gosling's performance because he was acting opposite a real thing rather than a tennis ball at the end of a stick.

To each their own, but I Really loved it.

Spielberg's first run is more impressive to me.

I can't watch Saving Private Ryan anymore either. The knife scene where the German slowly stabs the American while shushing him, I'd like to get that one out of my head. I haven't seen Schindler's List, not sure why I haven't either.

I think Spielberg's first run might be the best run of all time.

Though the Rob Reiner run of 9 (minus one) movies is absolutely WILD:

North (this is the one which is actively bad)
The American President.

Milage may very on each of them, but my goodness, some absolute classics in that list.

You should watch Schindler's list. It's not one which I can revisit very often, but it's so fantastically well made, well shot, and the story is so good, it's worth it. It's not like eating leafy green vegetables. It's so good.

If you're making out during Schindler's list, it's probably a sign of true love, given that it's like the absolute opposite of a make out mood setting film.

Since we have the unlimited movie pass, I've seen these movies in theaters:

- The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. My son (7) loved it. It's grossed $1.01 BILLION dollars world wide? Why? Who's to say. It was fun fine time at the movies I guess. I would not see it again under any circumstance.
- Mortal Kombat II. I liked this more than I should have. Was it a good movie? No. It was not. Was it well made? No. Was there a lot of CGI Slop? Yes. But it was just campy enough and didn't even attempt to take itself seriously, and the action was cool, I liked it. There is no plot to describe because why have a plot get in the way of action?
- The Sheep Detectives. Very cute. Some said this could be a sneaky award season type movie. I didn't see that. But it was cute. Hugh Jackman reading mystery stories to sheep who then have to solve the mystery of his murder (spoilers from the trailer, Hugh is murdered) is funny. It's also a movie that didn't take itself seriously, though it does have some more adult themes. I'd recommend this one, you don't have to see it with a kid to enjoy it.
- Disclosure Day. I liked it maybe more than some. I think the film making is amazing. The chase scenes were really good. I didn't think it felt long even though it was long. I have some notes on some of the plot points. Give the damn Oscar to Emily Blunt. She pulled off such a wonderful blend of serious and comedy, it was just great. The score composed by 94 year old John Williams cracks. Milage will certainly vary on this one. I really enjoyed it. I liked Project Hail Mary more as a Sci-Fi comparison from this year. But I still liked it and Spielberg is just a master director, and he was cooking. Script and plot could have used some work.
- He-Man, Master of the Universe. I saw this movie twice. Once alone (because I loved He-Man as a kid and my lovely wife had zero interest in seeing it, which I thought was a very legitimate point of view) and once with my son because he wanted to see it and I deemed it ok for him to see. It's not good. But it's campy enough to be entertaining. That's about all I have to say about that movie.
- Mandalorian and Grogu. I was so fantastically disappointed. I love Star Wars. It was just so "meh." My son loved it. I took him to see it a second time and I fell asleep. I guess I liked some of the grogu stuff. I had a lot of notes on plot, design, script, reason for existence, etc. It was just so "meh."
- Toy Story 5. I liked this, my kids didn't. Ironically. They thought it was just ok. I thought it was cute, and it hit on some good things. And I really enjoy spending time with Woody and Buzz. However, they weren't the primary characters in the movie. It was ok. If you don't have to pay for it and you liked the original Toy Story from decades ago, it's a good watch.
- Supergirl. I'm a sucker for Supergirl, and I am a fan of Millie Alcock. If hot blonde Australians is not your thing, I understand. (Maybe?) The movie was fine. Again, fun fine time at the movies. I think the movie has gotten a lot of critical hate I don't think it deserves. It wasn't Citizen Kane. Hell, it wasn't even the Superman movie from last summer. But it was entertaining, good action, and some good stuff. If you want to get into the plot and the why of certain things, you'll come away hating the movie. Just like it for what it is and it's fine.
- Minions and Monsters. I would not have seen this without kids and I will not see it again. There is literally zero plot. My son loved it. The 12 year old thought it was nonsense. Shrug.

I might see The Invite tonight, the family wants to see Moana tomorrow, and then I'm going to see the Odyssey next week.

I don't like horror. I've heard horror people have really loved Backrooms and Obsession. I haven't seen them because I don't like horror.

I discovered this great little flick about alternate reality. It's called 'The Matrix'. Worth a watch.

Seriously - first time I've watched it last night. I have been known to be a 'late adopter' lol...

I remember folks in the office hanging Matrix posters up all over the office when that movie came out.

I have never seen The Replacements, even though I have been tempted a lot.
Each time I start to consider watching it, I realize that Keanu Reeves in a jersey that looks more like the Patriots, and in a fictionalized version just doesn't excite me.
Even though I like Reeves...and the Pats.
If they made a docu-drama instead of a fictionalized version, and attempted to stay as close as possible to the original story, I would have jumped at it.
And probably a lot more other people would have as well, especially fans of the team

The Replacements is a fun movie with some great stars in it like Reeves and Hackman. I hated it when it first came out since it is not even close to the original story, but I grew to enjoy it later on once I stopped comparing it to our past.

I just found this trailer for MAYDAY and I gotta see this one. Not sure how to watch apple TV though.

There are a lot of good movies coming out this year and next. This one looks movie theater worthy.

Was a busy movie weekend for the Mrs and I.

The Death of Robin Hood - Really enjoyed this take on the story, I found the acting and storytelling excellent for what the movie is, it runs 2 hours but sure as hell didn't feel like it. If you are a Hugh Jackman fan and/or Robin Hood fan, I think you'd really enjoy it. Yes there is some violence this isn't Disney or Errol Flynn's Robin Hood.

The Long Walk - I read the book years ago so I wasn't really interested in seeing this but it was well done for the source material, the run time was spot on. Mrs .SO really enjoyed it having never known any of the story prior to seeing this film. If you are King movie adaptation fan, it's pretty good and if you like stories centered around "The Lottery" concept, definitely a good watch. Please note I lump a lot of movies including Hunger Games into "The Lottery" concept.

The Odyssey - Yes there was some hubbub about the casting choices, it's irrelevant while watching this as it just flows. Holy moly was this movie good, to sustain my attention for nearly 3 hours is almost impossible and I was glued to the seat (minus a few bathroom breaks). As a fan of the original story, this re-telling, re-imagining whatever you wish to call it was an A for me. Nolan imo crushed it.

I just watched the Long Walk, and it just didn't keep me engaged for some reason. Lost interest about halfway through. My wife enjoyed it.
