Summer Garden Time

I saw a recipe for pickled brussel sprouts. Didn't follow the recipe, but it made me curious. Bought some sprouts and blanched them for about 10 minutes in some salted boiling water. Then used my kosher dill recipe with them. I couldn't wait any longer and opened a jar last night. Holy cow are they good. The recipe called for halving them, but I left them whole and they came out amazing.

Think of European cabbage recipes for future inspiration

I didn't plant all that much because we are leaving for the Philippines for over a month next week but I have 10+ tomato plants of different varieties. Ive already picked probably 200 cherry tomatoes and most of the others are getting ripe now so I'll have to freeze them or something in about a week. My 4-5 pepper plants are going to have to hope it rains.

One thing though, in the Philippines several years ago I picked out the seeds from one single papaya that I liked and started an entire plantation of papaya plants in my yard there. A papaya plant grows and has fruit in maybe 9 months and each tree has probably 30-40 or more 2-3 pound papayas on it so you end up with lots of food you have to give away pretty fast. I just put seeds all along my fence and in a couple spots in the yard and they all turned into trees. They are only like 4 feet tall.

Also we have a humongous avocado tree that is currently full of several thousand avocado. They just drop all over the place. There are several banana trees and some coconut trees too. And a few pineapples that grow on the ground. There are others too but some of that stuff I don't eat. Hopefully our jackfruit tree has something too but that is even cheap at the store anyway.

My wife's mother took over most of the yard when we left so I don't know what it looks like right now, probably 2000 orchids, but I am going to get me some papaya seeds and maybe some others and try to grow that here in my basement with a light through the winter in pots and then put them outside in the summer. 1 papaya tree is probably going to make me 1000 dollars worth of papaya since they cost so much at the store here. Well, if it works. My wife is sitting here rolling her eyes at this genius idea of mine.

Nice. Got back from a week overseas and had some stuff to pick as well…

Not so much summer garden but tons of paw paws and figs from the yard. Collards and cabbage on the raised beds.

You have a keen eye. My wife thanks you for your kind comment. Yeah, we really like the Poblanos. Also, they have a "Poblano sausage" at 2-Fifty BBQ in Riverdale which is my favorite sausage. I get one or two every time I go, which isn't often enough. Best Texas BBQ in the region.

Grew a bunch of Tabasco peppers this summer I put in my freezer over the growing season. Diced them up into some brine along with some Jalapeños I grew and some garlic and fermented for 2 weeks. Pulled it out today, added a couple cups of white vinegar and cooked for 20 minutes. Threw in the food processor and then strained into canning jars and hot water canned. It’s damned tasty.

Had so many requests for hot sauce I decided to move the haul to hot sauce bottles.

Decided to make some fig jam with some of this years crop.

I would say medium - very similar to Tabasco (not surprisingly a I suppose)

How is that garden wrapping up? Nice yield this year? What did you learn?

Boone

I have collards and cabbage I will harvest soon. As far as learning, I have been at it for awhile (although not in recent years), but I still made the mistake of trying to cram in too many plants in a small area. That's always been an urge I needed to resist, so hopefully I will be better about it next Summer. I need to take down some brush and trees on the periphery of my garden area too. I had someone come out a decade or so ago and take down a bunch of trees, but the area has grown up again and the garden plot no longer gets the ideal direct sunlight it once did.

Hopefully I can address that this winter.

Boone how did those Korean kimchi green beans turn out?
