So, is there a reason Ted Leonsis got 500 mil after trying to leave the city without much fuss, but people are really fighting double that for something that has to be a bigger deal?
 
If I were Harris I would immediately start talking to MD or VA officials about what they could offer up ‘should DC not work out’. Turn up the heat some.
 
Just do a city wide vote. It's pass like 70-30 and we can all get on with our lives.

I’m sure he has and I’m sure MD would do anything they can to keep the team.

The problem is the fools who are against this will relish that as a way out.

That’s actually not a bad idea. I’m not sure how you get that on the ballot as a public referendum. But it would likely fly through.
 
Some of the Councilmen are sounding like spoiled brats. I don't like it because they didn't talk to me first. Waaah!

They have. Towards the end of the presser Harris actually cut off a new question in order to hurriedly add onto the end of the previous answer that they “have other options” but prefer DC. You could tell he was thinking he needed to throw that in there in a targeted way

I really think the mayor should have approached the communication differently. Talking points:

- the land is useless right now, an expensive eye sore
- we’re going to have to spend money, and a lot of it, just to get rid of the stadium and redevelop it
- we need to use the land to maximize tax revenue because park land would still just be a cost with no or little offsetting revenue.
- any developer who comes in to do anything would require infrastructure
- we are paying 0 dollars for a new stadium. We are paying what we would have to pay under any circumstance to redevelop the land.
- the commanders are paying $2.7 billion to bum the stadium.
- the tax revenue, which had been going to MD, and now will come to DC, helps offset the cost of the inevitable investment by the city.
- there isn’t another partner willing to invest $2.7B in DC. And the net benefit of any other type of investment would be significantly less
- so stop being butt holes about it your dumbass ninnies
 
Bottom line is the bitching will mostly come from people who care nothing about football, and will only see the unwashed masses showing up en masse at the place for a “stupid game” as cramping their style. There is always something else much more important to be focused on.
 
Some of the naysayers on the council may just be treating this as an opening bid, trying to squeeze a little more from Harris. Doesn’t mean they won’t back off if he doesn’t budge. I’d guess they could take a symbolic get and posture to their constituents about how tough they were representing DC interests. It’s going to pass in the end, I just don’t see Harris and the mayor going public unless they were pretty sure.

And I see no path that voting no is in the best interest of DC residents. Strikes me as a classic pay to play scheme.

I come back to the point that the DC counsel managed to turn down JKK when he wanted to pay for a stadium and asked for infrastructure and other support around the stadium.

This is a political body that has not always done the most rational thing for their constituents.

There is no question there will be some "pay to play" nature of this, as there always is. However District politics have always been, and always will be, wonky.

Also, as I posted above, I don't think the Mayor played the game well.

The then mayor of DC was not the brightest bulb out there. She wanted concessions that JKC found unpalatable considering he was footing most of the bill.

To be fair, JKC at that stage of his life could not have been the easiest man to deal with.

The DC government has rarely been a rational body dedicated to good governance.

JKK might not have been the easiest guy to deal with, but Maryland managed to do it.

Oh, I know. I could be a lot harsher with regards to the DC government. I should know. I grew up there.

We see this as a win-win business/development deal. They see things a bit differently ... then and now.
