(New Poll) The Washington Commanders Brand 2.0: Beer Drinkers and Hail Raisers

How do you feel about the Commanders Brand 2.0?

  • Vastly improved, if this is THE brand moving forward I’m satisfied.

  • I like the direction, but I still feel more to do. I will/have specified in thread.

  • I don’t like this new direction. I didn’t like the old either. They can’t make this work for me.

I know the fanbase will push for as much Redskins elements as possible for the foreseeable future.
But there has to be a point where we need to have the Commanders name/brand stand on its own.
If we were a name that faintly hearkens back to the Redskins, then we would have a much easier attempt to blend past and present branding together.
We however do not have a name that in any way reminds people of Redskins. So the most fans can do is demand to make things LOOK like the Redskins.

Uniforms and even helmets are the easiest things WSH can do so no harm there.

But logos, primary or secondary, should be made independently of a Redskins connection (team colors are the exception).
Now I get it, I was a name changer, I was on team (Red)Wolves. But the team stated that spears and feathers were NA imagery no matter how you spin it, and that it is not worth the money or time to spend in trademark court for (Red)Wolves.

We ALL dislike the name Commanders, not just because of how unappealing it is, but because we the fans had never campaigned for it. Even Brave was campaigned by the fans more than Commanders.
I heard Josh Harris not mention the fans embracing the name, and I am not surprised. We all feel no connection to a name we didn't want in the first place; and I think any expansion of the Commanders brand now HAS to come from the fans. The team HAS to promote the fans who took an impossible task of finding a way to make Commanders brand TOLERABLE. I mean I am not campaigning to #ExpandtheBrand because I like the name. I am doing this because I DON'T like the name. If I am gonna have to tolerate this name for the next 90 years, I want a brand that excites me whether the team is winning or losing. Players and coaches come and go; but the brand remains. And I want to wear a Commanders brand with pride and not explain it to strangers.

Some won't accept Commanders because Snyder did it, even claim he did it intentionally. But Snyder was such a bad owner that not only did he foolishly abandon the Washington Warriors trademark before Golden State won everything, but he got people so mad that they finally used the power of (no merch) money to take away the one thing he and the fans held dear: the name Redskins. I am certain that if the Redskins name wasn't removed, Snyder would still be here. While we have to suffer his toxic afternath with the loss of Redskins as our team name, we need to heal the pain with trying to make Commanders work. And the name will work best if we don't keep weighing it down with too many past Redskins traits.

We are always going to remind the world we were the Redskins; that is forever. But we need to stop asking ourselves who we are (like the Left Hand up song asks) and proudly say (independent of team performance) we are the Commanders!

It's like I say: Remember who we were, Take command of who we are.
You make a compelling argument, Sir. As long as we get the uniforms close to the classic look, I can probably be neutral or even lukewarm on almost anything they do with the branding.

I’m on Par w/OP on this

1: add some color to the already existing Helmet, yellow Facemusk etc….

2. Keep the Burgundy Tops w/Gold pants, it’s a mainstay imho.

3. I’d actually like to see the White Tops go w/Black pants along w/ a Burgundy-White-Gold stripe down the pants.

4. Several times through the season get back to some type of retro Uni…. Early 90’s style

I do not understand why they did not or will not switch to Redsomething. They'll capitulate to a woken mob, but ignore their own fans and heritage. They'll reinvent everything rather than just slashing 1/2 of a word.

I just don't get it and I suppose I never will.

So, I made a joke earlier about the black uniforms being our special ops commanders gear. On thinking more about it, I don't hate that line of thinking. While I'm not a fan of the black unis in general, I wouldn't necessarily hate if each of the uniforms had a theme or purpose. I keep wondering if there's a way to do a camoflage pattern? Maybe the jersey includes different patterns/shapes of varying shades of burgundy? It's probably not a good idea, but if we're going to rebrand let's go all out.

What's irritating to me is that the most obvious and logical tie-in to "Commanders" is one that due to the modern mindset we will most likely never see.

George Washington was the first Commander-in-Chief of the United States. The district is named for this man. Yet, because of a prevailing point of view about history I doubt such a branding scheme will ever be attempted. There is great potential here, but, alas, its potential will most likely remain untapped.

We could even do something like a Presidents Race during halftime. /sarc

its kind of ironic that our team is now glorifying the military that basically defeated the native-american tribes and cleared the way for expansion

whatever
It wouldn't surprise me at all if it was somewhat intentional. Snyder and his people were that petty.

Hey h? Never noticed

just shows how stupid everything is when you step back. Dan named them commanders thinking it was a + for him keeping the team...nothing more

Did I miss a bit of sarcasm?
No, more of a weird typo. I never really noticed or paid any attention to the black camo. Every so often, I get these weird artifacts because of the touchpad.

You can see it better on this image.

If the ditched the W on the helmet and the commaders on the chest, it would look way better

Black jerseys just don't get it for me. Keep the B & G jersey/pant colors for home games and give me white jersey and gold pants for away games with burgundy helmets for both home and away games.

It's not Redskins anymore so I don't see why they kind of kept the colors. Why not just totally change everything and come up with something that looks good? Because I really don't like any of it. The hotdog ketchup and mustard look, the W on the helmet, the white uniform, the no stripes on the pants.

They totally fail and need to fix it all.

Like in a video game where you create a character and can click on random over and over and each time it comes up with a totally different look, they need to keep clicking. They chose the wrong everything pretty much.

I think the 'intentions' of Jason Wright and other decisionmakers were good. They were *trying* to salvage what they could of the traditions fans cared about. But it's very difficult to straddle a fence between changing a team's core identity while simultaneously attempting to preserves some traditions. I don't know if it could have been done successfully by anyone, but I don't think the folks making the decisions at the times were experienced enough or tuned into the fans enough to pull it off. It was more or less one disaster after another.

You know what they say, the most likely result of trying to walk down the middle of a busy highway is getting run over.

Obviously there is a ton of talk about changes to the uniforms, with the white jerseys being very prominently included. I took some time this morning looking through photos from the past. I would be surprised if the photo of Jake below wouldn’t be pilloried by the fans if it wasn’t part of the past and was instead offered up by the new ownership.

Please add your own photos below of previously used white jerseys that you think would be home runs.

You don’t totally change everything because this is one of the oldest franchises in football with almost 100 years of history. You don’t just cut your brand off from all the loyal fans, the hall of fame players, or the five championships. Our traditions should be preserved as much as possible. Our colors in particular look great.
