(New Poll) The Washington Commanders Brand 2.0: Beer Drinkers and Hail Raisers

How do you feel about the Commanders Brand 2.0?

  • Vastly improved, if this is THE brand moving forward I’m satisfied.

  • I like the direction, but I still feel more to do. I will/have specified in thread.

  • I don’t like this new direction. I didn’t like the old either. They can’t make this work for me.

Not everybody views our nations history the same, which is why it is best we stay away from specific people with the brand. Everybody has a grievance or opinion about everything.

Nothing saps the joy or fun out of a discussion quicker than political/social slants or negative historical perspectives…let’s keep that out of this thread.
Understood.

Well I think you just brought it up lol, but well stated and I agree. Even historical figures who seem beyond reproach today could be judged differently by future standards.

SER=3]Boone[/USER] would be devastated if something happened to Major Tuddy. :p
Yes a terrible, terrible tragedy

Here are some Washington Warriors design ideas that could work for Commanders also. I think the pentagon shape and the shield ideas are good.

You could put the crest inside the pentagon shape also. Three stars in the bottom half.

…so it’s safe to say you DON’T like Major Tuddy?

He's fine. I like whole smoked hogs better.

So the correct answer regarding the branding is as follows:

The Good:
1. The W. I think they did well on that. It's simple, clean. It beats the crap out of whatever they used for WFT.
2. Matte helmets. I don't know why, they just look cool. But as others have said, needs to gold mask and white stripes.
3. The Battle Blacks. Different and original. I think they can stand to be a cleaned up a little--but the pattern on the sleeves needs to be replicated elsewhere. It's the same as the Raise Hail Flag.
4. The Burgundy Homes. I like them.
5. The Raise Hail hashtag. I hate how they cheaply photoshopped "Commanders" over everything. HTTC sucked.

The Bad:
1. The white jerseys. Tanya Snyder was proud of these, that ditz; she definitely outsourced these to Jim Zorn. The pattern in the numbers sucks, why is there no gold? Fix the pattern, replace the black with the gold. Maybe even use the burgundy lined, gold numbers like the blacks. That would look good.
2. The fight song. Either just play the music without lyrics, or write a new song. Hail to the Redskins was so iconic; duct taping Commanders over it is awful. I miss singing Hail to the Redskins after every score. Get someone awesome to sing it. Get something original. Think Motorhead singing "The Game."

That is the definitive list. If you disagree--that's fine, not everyone can be right all the time. Just consider it a lesson in humility. 😁

My general thought is the more traditional or classic the better, the more contemporary and futuristic the worse. This is one of the oldest franchises in football not an expansion team.

I like burgundy and gold. I don’t like maroon and black. The burgundy jersey paired with gold pants is the best of our new looks. The white jerseys are awful, would be better with more gold, no black, and sold colors instead of the weird dots. The pants and socks would be better with stripes. The black uniforms are the worst thing from the new brand, but the kids like them so we might be stuck, maybe they could be improved with burgundy numbers outlined in gold.

I would love to see throwbacks, ideally even the Redskins uniform from the Super Bowl years with the Wetzel logo, but also the helmet with the feather in back, the spear logo, or the Lombardi R would be cool. Maybe the Lombardi unis with a W instead of an R?

I like the crests with the year we were founded and Super Bowl years. I would use them more, maybe even as a helmet logo.

I actually like the new helmets. The numbers in the back are a nice touch, and the colors and matte finish are good, but I think they would be better with gold face masks.

I don’t hate the W logo, sometimes simple is better, and W means winning.

I don’t hate the Commanders name as much as I used too, it is sorta-kinda-almost an anagram of Redskins which is cool enough I guess. However, I would much prefer the shortened form to be Manders instead of Commies.

Major Tuddy is okay due to the connection to the hogs and old Redskins Jersey he wears.

Finally, and most importantly to me, we should fix the fight song. Bring back the original music, change the line “fight for our commanders” to something more in line with “braves on the warpath,” and maybe drop the word “to” so it’s “Hail the Commanders,” with the right number of syllables and cadence.

1000%. This is the most important to me. I saw so many great mock-ups from random Joe Smiths on Twitter and we got Tanya Snyder's atrocities.

This is the perfect place for me to state my case with freedom of space!

FTR, I am not a fan of the name, but the name is not going away; so I swallow the pill.

What WSH currently has for branding however is not exciting enough for me to move closer. We went from 4 branding elements as Redskins (NA head, letter R, Spear, feathers) to just 2 as Commanders. A unique font W and a simple crest with no personality (WE ARE NOT SOCCER!) is not something we should only have for the next 90 years. We did not have this simple branding/name since the 1930s like Green Bay and New York Giants had, so we shouldn't act like it.

We need to #ExpandtheBrand!

While I understand the demand to bring in as many elements of the Redskins, it can only take you so far. Redskins and Commanders IRL have very little in common. And whenever WSH tries to blend Redskins tradition with Commanders branding, it becomes unappealing:

-I won't talk about the uniforms because every team tries making new uniforms and end up going back to their old style in 5 years.
-We tried bringing back Hail phrase, but that has been replaced by the ingenious "Raise Hail" with the founding forefathers script.
-No matter how much you complain, the spear and feathers are NA imagery and have nothing to do with Commanders. So they are not coming back
-The fight song will never be the same as before, but it can be better. I did my version where I took the 1/16th note that had to be added to the 3 syllable name and moved it earlier in lines 1 and 3. I also changed line 3 to say "Brave our fortune favors". Why? because people want to bring Braves back but brave is close enough and the line is based on the Roman phrase "Fortune favors the bold" and translators say bold can be brave.

But that is the extent of Redskins traditions that can work. We need to say no more Redskins branding carryover and start adding things that are solely connected to Commanders.
We need a VISUAL IDENTITY. A name is only as powerful as its visual reference. Something we can spot in real life and immediately think of our team. All pro teams created/redesigned in the last 30 years have a visual identity that pairs with their name or team letter. And currently, teams like CIN, KC, LAR, and TEN have more than just the letter. TEN may not show an actual Titan in their branding, but at least they add their T into the state flag star circle and set it on fire (and their secondary logo is a sword). If TEN was just a T like WSH has, it would not look as exciting.

Even the NHL's Seattle Kraken is an S but has Kraken elements blended with it.

So what do we connect the word Commander to?

Police
Military (Navy specifically but can be used in the other departments)
Commander-in-Chief

Since the W is done in chopped font like the military, we should reference the military primarily in our visual identity.
Luckily there is an item we can add to the Commanders branding that is literally used to identify someone: the soldier dog tag

It is a simple shaped that we can easily place the W inside and it strike an identity we all can wrap our heads around. when I see a dogtag, I see a mark of discipline and bravery and grit. Things the team talked about during their rebrand days. And the best part is, with the right coloring, we can replicate our old Redskins helmet!

For those who want something simple to expand the Commanders brand, they can enjoy this.

But for those who want more, I did more! Notice the black is not completely black? That is because I didn't want our new color to be the same black as other teams. I wanted a unique shade of black. That is why I made "Camouflage Black". A shade of black whose hex code is actually #323232! Camo black fits well with our present colors and can lead to a "black" helmet with real camo patterns on it!

But there is one more thing I would add: an animal. Not hog because Major Tuddy is Redskins based.

Police and Military and even Govt departments all have K-9 units.
And a K9 fits with our current culture. Our players have been calling each other dogs. And Doc Walker calls all his listeners K9s. But K9s are not dogs like Saints' St Bernard nor dawgs like Browns Bull Mastiff.

Dogs are pets. K9s are professionals. Like our players!
And I made a German Shepherd logo (I JUST updated it) based off a template from Logowik and made it the secondary mascot of Commanders. Notice the DC in its base and the Washington Monument in its ear. And its vest has the DC flag and five Pentagon shaped studs representing our championships.
It would only be secondary but I think it can pair well with Major Tuddy. In fact, the final two choices for mascot were hog and a (German Shepherd). Obviously Hog won 79/21, but because I have was constantly emailing the team throughout 2022 about adding a German Shepherd, that is no coincidence!

So TLDR, here are my ways to #ExpandtheBrand
1. Tweak the song
2. Add a soldier dog tag to give the name more of a visual identity
3. MAYBE add a German Shepherd as a secondary mascot

I remember you from the bloody Twitter name wars of 2020-2022. I remember you being very pro-canine as in wolves. I remember you were anti-hog in any fashion and against harkening back to most anything Redskins. I am not attacking. I am stating my recollection because I saw your mock-ups on many, many threads. I am personally not a fan of the dog stuff. And I honestly like MAJ Tuddy because of his connection to the past.

However, I would get on very onboard with your dog tag helmets because your mock-ups look much closer to our classic look than most things that have been floated including our current helmets.

I do have a question. What is your approximate age? Do you remember the glory years?

They should do something with Major Tuddy, along the line of the Browns dog logo:

Why is it even "Washington," for that matter? Everyone says "DC" or "The District." I was born in DC and grew up in Arlington and Falls Church. I've never known anyone who has called The District "Washington."

I’m 42. I have been a fan since 1990. So I saw the glory days.
