What Would You Like For The New Name Of This Team?

I wouldn't go 'Native American' with Warriors - I'd go military. The possibilities are awesome. Camouflage uniform or components. Honor a different famous military unit at halftime every game. Discount or ticket giveaways to members of the branch celebrated.

Of course, some people despise the military - which thanks to the military they have every right to feel and express :)

Mark The Homer - why do we have two threads with the same title? I have merged. If you want to add a poll later, you can edit the thread and add it.

Aren't the Sentinels from The Replacements? No idea why "military themed" is the first takeaway for a Washington fan, it should be that movie based on our team.

To keep it as close to the original, I guess Red Wolves but I think Warriors would work also.

It's weird to me because Commandos was already available and was a much better name. I'd still prefer something we could somehow make work with either our old logo or our old name or both but it's amazing how bad they fumbled it. Sentinels at least sounds cool as a name even if it doesn't fit what I ultimately want.

Braves.

I really hate that some confluence of internal and external factors (the fever pitch of political correctness, Dan Snyder having no leverage or advocates in the league, and minority owners being in influential positions with sponsors) resulted in the elimination of our old name and, consequentially, much of our proud history. Because of that, the only compromise to get it back would be roll things back to 1932 and adopt the franchise's original name.

I realize there are challenges (a well-known baseball team and an association with Native Americans), but I think it's as close as we could get. Clearly, it's not deemed as racist (see Atlanta) and we'd be able to use the Indian head logo again.

Yes - that was the name of the team in the Replacements

I like it

I wrote before- Redhawks, because it would have been (and still could be the most seamless transition from Redskins. Redwolves, Red Storm, Red Almostanything works too.

I could have lived with Washington Football Team. Better than Commanders.

Warriors would be ok- friend of mine loves this because he imagines them playing clips from the Warriors movie during key plays.

The Burgundy & Gold- a mouthful but that is who we are.

Radical ideas:

Nationals- cut a deal with the Nats for cross marketing.

Redskins- 1) Say fu and bring it back or 2) Ditch all NA imagery, use R logo from Lombardi era, and declare that it refers to the color of the uniforms. I know, unlikely.

Remember when Chris Berman would refer to the "New York Football Giants" as a way of paying homage to the time when there was a baseball team with the same name in New York (before they moved to San Francisco)?

For me personally, it's all about history and continuity. I go back as far as Sonny's last hurrah, but I love reading about Mitchell, Baugh, etc. I like how the history of the franchise reflects the history of the city and the region. Part of the strange feeling I have with Commanders is that it's not quite my ancestral team, but rather a replacement for something that has departed, like the Houston Texans.

That is why I would like Redhawks, Redwolves, etc. At least there is something akin to continuity.

I have my own preference in what I want the team to be named, but it's superceded by my desire for this debate to end forever. I am exhausted by it.

...

I don't think 'Redskins' should be on the list as the owner has already stated emphatically that it is not on the table and isn't coming back.

I remember seeing that. But then this came out...

Harris, who bought the football team from longtime owner Dan Snyder last year for $6.05 billion, had previously said the old Redskins name, originating in 1933, would not return.

But Harris' group includes NBA legend Magic Johnson, who told NBC News otherwise.

"Everything's on the table, especially after this year," Johnson told journalist Craig Melvin last year. "We'll see where we are with the name."

Not sure what the relevance of the article is, but Harris has stated multiple times 'Redskins' isn't coming back. I don't believe anything has changed with that.

Harris' comment came after Johnsons.
Not to mention, whose words should we give more weight to ? Harris' or Johnson ?

Not a tough call.

I wouldn't put Redskins in the poll. It skews the percentages of the other choices.

Yah Mon!

JK, but I’d rather be named after a cheap beer, then named by a crappy owner
