Official Game Thread - NFC CHAMPIONSHIP - Commanders @ Eagles

Dyami needs to get CJ Gardner ejected again - get in his face trash talk goad him he's clearly a hot head. Terry needs to get a shoulder right into Quinyon's wonky shoulder to start the game - or better yet our orgish Bates on a WR screen to TMC. I want to see every advantage exploited. Very unGibbs like, I know. If an Eglett DB gets injured but stays in the game, i want a spotter in the booth get on the red phone to Kliff and target him. Bullseye on his ass. If a player gets knocked out of the game, target the street DB forced into action.

No prisoners!

With the extremely notable exception that Daniels is better than Hurts, I’m not entirely sure, from a player to player perspective, Kelce is wrong.
That is QUITE a big caveat. Yes there is an argument there on units (perhaps not player by player, but units) that Kelce is right, EXCEPT QB. That is a big "EXCEPT" that he refused to admit because why? Maybe he didn't want Eagles fans to throw their diapers at him? He made a big deal about how it was his honest assessment but it's pretty universally accepted that right now, there is one important position where we have the better player (again, right now). I mean, you're supposed to be an analyst now Kelce. Grow up.

Actually there is really NO way he can justify this, because I don't think there is a single stat that works in his favor.

If the argument is, well he is a rookie, then I guess throw out the Eagles DBs supposedly superior nature, because there are more rookies there.

I don't think he has a leg to stand on.

Here is the thing, outside of QB, he isn't wrong.

Even stretching, I can't legitimately put more than 5 or 6 of our starters in the Philly lineup.

Terry in ahead of Smith (but that is our #1 against their #2)
Ertz (maybe)
Allen in next to Carter
Luvu (but only because Dean is on IR)
Lattimore

The thing is we are playing together, with purpose, without mistakes, and within a brilliant scheme - all of which Kelce goes on to talk about and praise if you watch the whole extended clip.

I'm not sure how much it matters if their receivers and TE are better than ours, if their passing game as a whole is weaker. I know that's largely about Jayden. But, I think it's also true that the Eagles are limited in the passing game, and I think it's a big enough weakness that if we can figure out how to limit Saquan, we have a good chance to walk away with the game.

If he is going to be "honest" he should have mentioned QB - so to me, he was ignoring the most obvious place where we *currently* have the better player. I am not saying Jalen can't have a better day, especially factoring in defenses or just the day-to-day aspects of being human, but there is no way to ignore the most obvious place we have the better player. It should have been mentioned if he was really being honest. I would have respected that. This? Not so much. As an "analyst" (for him, it's in quotes now), ignoring something that obvious and plain... not a good look, in my eyes.

Kelce is ’whistling past the graveyard’ with those statements. He’s nervous because he knows we are a very dangerous opponent and he’s trying to reassure himself that Philly ‘should win’.

He should be nervous.

Twenty-seven teams -- including the Tennessee Titans, New York Giants and New England Patriots -- attracted more Super Bowl bets than the Commanders last offseason at BetMGM sportsbooks. There was approximately 10 times as much money wagered on the New York Jets to win the Super Bowl than there was on the Commanders entering September.

Four months later, Washington is the most popular bet on the board at BetMGM. More bets have been placed on the Commanders to beat the Eagles straight-up than have been placed on any other outcome in either championship game this weekend. Washington is around a +240 underdog to win the game outright.

I was in Vegas in early December. I thought about placing a bet on them to win the Super Bowl, but never did. At the time, I believe they were +4000. I wish I had made that bet.

All this roster comparison also keeps forgetting that in football, coaching matters, I would argue, more than any other sport. Dan Quinn > Punk Ass Sirianni by a MILE.

I'll take the team with the better QB and the better coach all day. Let's stomp Philthy on Sunday.

Hail.

My buddy was in Charlestown early October and put $20 on the Commanders to win the Super Bowl just for shits and giggles. It was +5000 at the time.

Nice - I got it at +10000 before the season and I'm kicking myself I only put $6 on it. I also got Jayden to win ROTY at +375.

I had the same sense about the roster comparison - the Eagles are clearly far ahead, but after doing a bit of thinking and poking around, I’m less sure about the gap than I was.

Surprisingly, we’re across the board a better pass rushing D - pressure %, hurry %, QB knockdown %. Of course, they’re far better at limiting scoring, stopping the run, getting takeaways, and are less penalized. So certainly a better D overall. Going player specific, I find it interesting that Armstrong has more pressures than Carter, and then Fowler and Luvu have more pressures than Sweat and Smith.

I think there are some big factors that need to be considered. First off, this is our first year in this D. Secondly, we spent almost the entire year with BSJ or Davis in the lineup. Thirdly, we play very different defensive styles. Our defense is focused first and foremost on not giving up the big play, whereas the Eagles are about limiting the short stuff, including stopping the run. If you can get decent protection, it seems like the Eagles are more likely to give up the big play. I think us playing a lot of 6 man boxes makes our run D look worse than it could be.

I think I like all of their O and D units better than us with the exception of QB, though I think LB might be a push. I’d take our ST over theirs though, sans maybe/probably K. Coverage has been killing it outside the one Dallas game, and McCaffrey/Crowder have been really good on returns.

At individual positions, I think I’d take Ekeler over Gainwell, Chinn and Gardner are close I think, I’m not sure who their slot receiver is offhand, so maybe we get the edge there, ditto slot corner? Center may be a push? With Lattimore in the game, I’m not sure I take Mitchell/Dejean over him and Sainristil (though I can see the argument).

I guess overall, it might be a lot closer than it initially appears. Crucially though, they have a damn good DT in Carter, 2 excellent receivers, a superior oline, and one of the best backs in football. I like our depth at running back, receiver, DT, DE, OT, and (to an extent) S, though we’re lacking interior oline depth.

Beyond Daniels, I think this team’s superpower is the culture that’s been carefully built. A top down vision that has built a bond between players and coaches, and a brotherhood among the players. That, coaching adjustments, and how this staff is extremely intentional in how they put guys into positions to succeed, and not asking them to do things they’re uncomfortable with. So overall, yeah, the Eagles have a superior roster, but the unquantifiable puts us on their level.

Exactly.
Let's not forget this is the same coach who completely lost that locker room last year and went down in an almost unprecedented collapse.
If it weren't for fangio I think that team would have come unglued again this year.

Nice one. We were still 16/1 to reach the Superbowl at the beginning of the Play-offs which I availed myself of. Which is sadly why we won't win on Sunday!

Fangio and Barkley having a historic year as a running back.

I would willingly make the argument that though Philadelphia has a significantly better sum of individual parts, like Tampa did, like Detroit did, Washington is performing better as a team. I also believe that Siriani is the weakest of the 3 HCs that we have/will faced.

Agreed. I've said it all year. This is a "the whole is better than the sum of its parts" kind of team. If we look at our running back room, our wide receiver room, and even our tight end room, you'd be hard pressed to find a player (other than Terry) that any team would want to poach as their immediate starter. Whose benching their starters for Dyami Brown, OZ, McNichols, Bates or Sinnott? Maybe you'd get some takers for Ekeler and Ertz though I think age/injury would scare off most suitors. I don't think anyone's running to claim BRob.

On defense, I think we do have stealable players. I think a bunch of teams might want to poach Luvu, Wagner, Lattimore, Sainristil, Chinn.

But our offense works. It works better than most offenses in the league. Castoffs like Noah Brown and OZ have way overproduced their pedigree. Bubble players like Dyami Brown have made a legit case for being resigned. Ertz and Ekeler found the fountain of youth. A C line at the beginning of the year is performing most weeks as a B line. Heck, even John Bates is catching everything thrown his way. So while we may not have better players than the other guy I like the players we got.
