Since I got out last year, I am still working toward purchasing a vehicle, which I will finally be able to do next month. As a result, I've had to rely on riding Lime scooters to and from work every day. I've logged nearly 500 miles and never had an incident.
On my way home today, I was going almost 20mph (the city enforced max speed) and the back wheel came off. The scooter immediately came out from under me, I hit the sidewalk so fast I couldn't get my hands down, and my ribs, shoulder and leg made contact first. I slid and tumbled nearly 50 feet before stopping, and only stopped when I reached out trying to grab anything, and as my luck would have it, it was a rose bush loaded with thorns.
So I separated my shoulder, cracked two ribs, dislocated my patella, the rose bush tore my hand up pretty badly, and all of the skin on the right side of my right calf was completely scraped off.
The homeowner that witnessed the accident called 911 and I'm glad I went to the ER, because I had no idea I was in such bad shape. I spent several hours being treated before I was released, and I contacted Lime to let them know their scooter had a serious malfunction resulting in serious injury, and they might want to look into that particular model to make sure it wasn't a defect issue so other riders wouldn't get hurt.
I never mentioned money, I wasn't seeking money, accidents happen and I accepted that possibility when I got on it. But the guy I spoke to immediately had an attitude with me and said it was my fault, I was probably being reckless, and they weren't liable.
It caught me off guard, and I told him I didn't want anything, I just wanted to bring it to their attention, because it was their newest generation scooter and I wanted them to check it out and make sure it was a fluke and not a manufacturer defect so other riders don't get hurt or even killed.
I could not have been more calm, rational, and understanding. His response before he hung up on me was, "if your injuries are that serious, I guess you're gonna have to sue us." Wtf? I'm not a vengeful person at all, but his hostility almost makes me want to sue them just because he's a jerk.
