The Pet Thread

buffalo blue hypoalergenic or whatever it's called.
if its caused by allergies it doesn't appear to be from the food :\

Is there any ingredient in that food and old food? Also what kind of soap etc is used on his fur, beds etc

My dog is still licking :(

I watch a lot of Cesar Milan and sometimes the licking can be a behavioural thing and not an allergy. I think you said you had a border collie, they are a high activity mission type of dog. On there lots of times more exercise or a purpose can help them in general. Hope whatever it is you can get him to stop, sucks when they can't help themselves.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure he's just 'special'

Unfortunately he doesn't get the amount of activity he needs. We try... but short of giving him up to a family that has land and/or a farm, we don't have any other options. We can only take him for multiple-mile-runs so many days a week :\

You have a place you can play frisbee??? If I had a border collie that would be job 1 for him. They seem to love that and it burns off a ton of energy plus it's cool as hell.

Oh yeah, he loves the Frisbee. He's really, really good at it too. He's very good at fetch in general.

Maybe start one Friday and wear his butt out over the weekend playing frisbee regularly and see if it helps. It probably is much more likely to be food or environment, but you never know.

Well I'm using a hypoallergenic food so I don't think it's food :\

It could very well be environment and there's nothing I could do about it.

We take him for runs multiple times a week. Now that the weather is nicer we'll be able to take him to the parks and throw the Frisbee/ball.

He's actually at my parents house for a few weeks because we're doing a bike trip this weekend and couldn't take him with. He's probably getting worn out down there.

You should have them paying attention if he licks or not. Could narrow some stuff down if he stops there.

Awesome that should help narrow it down to allergy or behavior :)

I'm thinking of switching our dog's food from Iams to Blue Buffalo. The problem is, I switched him to a new food 1 1/2 years ago and had issues. Henry was fine for a few months and then he started throwing up a couple times a day. The vet suggested some medicine, but it didn't work. After looking up his problems online, we switched back to the old food and gave him smaller meals several times a day. He got better and we were eventually able to go back to feeding him twice a day. I'm worried if I switch his food, even slowly, he'll get sick again. He didn't get sick for a while after we switched food. What do you guys think?

It all depends on the dog. We switched one dog from (damn I forgot what we used to feed her lol) to Fresh Pet, and she had no issues at all. We have recommended it to a few friends who also made the switch without incident. And it's hard for me to believe there's a healthier dog food out there, because the ingredients are visible and it's not full of filler or sugar or anything else. Just whole grain, whole vegetables, and meat. If you have problems with the Blue Buffalo, it would be worth a shot.

Are you mixing? If he's that sensitive try mixing and do it VERY gradually over a 2 week span. Start with say 10 to 1 old to new and gradually work your way over to a reverse ratio. I am a fan of Wellness which is on the same nutritional level as Blue Buffalo. Another route you can take which I have since latching up with the current breeder I have is supplements. I have 2 I give: Olewo Carrot pellets do all kinds of great things for GI and skin etc. It's why raw carrots are an excellent treat for dogs. I also use Nupro for dogs which is a powder that you hydrate into a liver based gravy and put on their food. It is just loaded with all kinds of things that vets specifically recommend for dogs of all kinds. It's fantastic stuff and heath issues common to my dog's breed have never been present since I got on this stuff...like skin, joints etc (I have a Rottweiler).

Good luck!

He's a pit rescued from a Harrisburg dogfight ring. He doesn't need the chain, but he thinks it makes him look badass.

Just curious but did u go full throttle or mix the two together in increments? The vet told us do it that way to minimize upset stomach.

You have a good looking dog Terry. How's his temperament?
