What's for Dinner - Thanksgiving Edition

Thinking about this as an appetizer...eggrolls with turkey, stuffing, and a dab of cranberry sauce for sweetness...what do my foodie brothers think - would that 'work' ?

That sounds like a tiny slice of heaven on earth.

If you're concerned about disappointing your guests, however, feel free to drop off a dozen or so at my house this evening; and I can test them out for you. ;)

*sigh* My mom's work stretch (midnights, 8 days in a row) starts Wednesday, so she'll be in bed Thursday. My kids go with their mom to their great aunt's cabin at The Woods, WV. My dad is going out to dinner with other single-and-60 friends....

And I'm.......well, I'm going up to the nursing home for Thanksgiving lunch with my 96-year old Redskin-fan grandmother. She's the one who used to occupy my sig. She's the reason I'm a fan, and I love her with everything I'm able. I'm going cause it'll mean something to her. Her mind is actually pretty clear right now, which is awesome. So, yeah....anyone who wants to join us is welcome! lol

I probably won't eat, because the smell in there makes me about half queasious (my mom's word -- pronounced "QUEE shus.") And I attempted to eat the slice of tannish-colored meat up there last year without success. I'll tell her I'm happy with a cup of coffee, and great company.

I'll be back here in time to watch the game, and hang out with the other ne'er-do-wells in chat. And I will be bringing home Mickey D's for Thanksgiving dinner....happily. It's the most American and simple (sorry for the redundancy) thing to do. And besides that, when I was in high school, I worked at Mickey D's on two Thanksgiving days. They were miserable, massively busy, and a colossal pain the ass, quite frankly.

I'm looking forward to thanking the counterperson for being there.

I know, I know. :violin:

I think what you are doing is honorable and kind. Be proud of that! The only thing that saddens me is that you arent having a real traditional dinner.

Sorry if that came off as a sob story. Certainly not my intent. I'll leave the nursing home, feeling good that my grandma didn't eat alone on Thanksgiving. And that means a great deal to me.

I talked to Mom last night, as well as my ex and the kids. Judging by everyone's schedules, we'll have our traditional meal, oh, sometime in April.

But don't cry for me (Argentina.) It's gonna be a GREAT day. Capped by a 24-12 spanking of the Cowboys. And I'll got to bed that night a happy camper!

I just want to say too that I received an incredibly kind and generous invitation from a BGOer, inviting me to dinner with him and his family. To say that I was touched is a huge understatement. As I said yesterday, quite simply, I love you guys. This is the best group of human beings ever assembled in one place.

Have thought about butterflying one but never done it...may consider that though :)

Sounds awesome - and may I humbly suggest the sweet potato salsa I listed in the other thread? Delicious and topical! (Yams)

Where hosting today being my sister doesn't have a TV worth watching, and we're going pretty traditional.

Anti pasta (salad Italian style)
Dates stuffed with cheese, wrapped in bacon, then glazed with maple syrup
Turkey
Stuffing / dressing
Twice baked sweet potatoes
Mashed potatoes
Some sort of green bean dish
Home made cranberry sauce
Pumpkin pecan pie
Butter cup squash pie with gluten free crust

And of course, a special treat for me, turkey gizzard.....

Enjoy the food, friends, and family.

Those dates sound outrageous! And do you do anything special with the gizzard, or you just leave it in and call dibs when the turkey comes out of the oven?

This my grilled turkey.

That looks butterflied - right? Nice!

John, did you make the egg rolls? I'm anxious to hear how they turned out. Sounded fantastic!

I'll be doing them Saturday, will let you know...

I was resisting going the butterfly route, but you've swayed me. I'm going to do rub mine with the below rub:
1/4 cup olive oil
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon white wine
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
4 teaspoons of fresh rosemary, chopped
4 teaspoons of fresh thyme, chopped
4 teaspoons onion, minced
4 teaspoons garlic, minced
2 teaspoons salt

then cook the whole bird brick style on the grill.

My marinade.

1 cup olive oil
1/4 cup lemon juice
6 cloves garlic
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
Salt and pepper

For 13 lb. turkey took 1 1/2 hours. First 10 minutes did skin side down. Also used couple bricks.

Roses are red
Violets are blue,
Elephants are fat
And I am too.

I'm stuffed!

Old saying - applies to me today. And for the next few days until leftovers are gone.

The friends house we went to served Yorkshire pudding - its my new favorite! So...effing....GOOD!

The dates were off the wall good, and the gizzard is just roasted in a small dish with the heart and liver. No dibs, I'm the only one who'll eat them since my dad passed away.

Food network for the date recipe...
