2016 Week 3 - Redskins @ Giants

Perspective

In 2013, Peyton Manning threw for an incredible 5,477 yards. In doing so, he broke the all-time NFL record for the most passing yards in a single season.

5,544 yards. After two games, that's the pace that Kirk Cousins is on this very season.

Hard to believe, right?

Ask just about any Skins fan, and they'll quickly give you a hot take on how badly Kirk Cousins has played this season. He's underthrowing receivers. He's overthrowing receivers. He's missing wide open receivers. He's forcing the ball to covered receivers. Heck, he looks like he's lost all confidence in himself. Another game like these first two and we'll need to bench him for Colt McCoy.
Now it's true, he hasn't looked like the Cousins that lit up the NFL last season. He may even be the single biggest reason why we lost a heartbreaking game to Dallas last weekend. But what's the bigger story here? The fact that Cousins might continue to stumble and fail? Or the fact that even playing seemingly as poorly as he has, that we have such a good offense, and such great playmakers that he's on pace to shatter the single season record? Imagine if he actually plays well....

Clinton Portis is blasting someone else for our 0-2 start:

“You had a cool season last year, and your only offseason move was (signing cornerback) Josh Norman,” Portis said, according to Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post. “You needed to go out and make offseason moves on the D-line. You needed to find some kind of speed. We have no team speed. You needed to find a pass-rusher. You needed to find an interior D-lineman. We didn’t address any of the issues we needed to address. You (drafted) the sports car in (rookie receiver) Josh Doctson, but there were so many receivers in this draft … We should have went and addressed a need.”

Just a few months earlier, Portis and almost every other Redskins fan was preaching BPA as the best draft approach. So what's changed after two games, Clinton? Was the goal to fill as many needs as possible for this season, or to draft the most exceptional BPAs with an eye on the next five seasons?

And although early, Josh Doctson has flashed--coming back to catch one of those "errant" Kirk Cousins passes for 57 yards against Dallas. Second-rounder Su'a Cravens is the highest rated of all rookie LBs in the league this season.

Cousins and McCloughan aren't the only targets of frustration for our disappointing start of course. The coaching staff is taking serious fire. Jay Gruden obviously sucks. We should probably fire the HC that created this offensive system that has a terrible Cousins on pace to shatter NFL records and replace him with......someone.

Joe Barry has no idea what he's doing. He probably has no business being a DC in this league. "I hate Joe Barry!" was a frequent comment from Redskins fans this week. Although he sure did a pretty good job with a patchwork group last season. Now he has Josh Norman, and he looks like he might develop into a good player in this league one day......

So what's it going to be, Redskins fans? Are we going to point fingers at the players, coaching staff and even our new GM? Are we going to allow a few early losses (something out of our control) affect us and throw us into a state of severe depression, rage and anxiety? Or are we going to control what we can and have a little faith? A lot of how this season goes really is up to each one of us.
Just two months ago, we were searching aimlessly to watch any recorded game from prior years to quench our thirst for football. A 16 game season really does go by quickly. And then it's seven months of barren desert. My advice is to enjoy it while it's here and to find the positives as we go through these growing pains.

In the words of Ferris Beuller, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."
On a much more important note, two of our best members at this great site had serious medical challenges in recent months. I know that I can speak for everyone when I say that we are happy to hear that both are on the road to recovery.

Oh, there's also a football game this weekend. We're traveling into New York to take on the surging Giants. Let's hope the team can snap out of this early funk, tune out all of the naysayers and come together to get us the W.

I want to see my Redskins friends happy again.
