How Much Time do YOU Give Shanahan?

As long as Allen wants him around, you give him his five years. Last year there really wasn't much Shanny could do personnel-wise. Everyone has to remember what a train wreck this team was on his arrival. Not only had danny and vinny derailed the train, they drove it off the track and over a bridge while hauling a few million gallons of Diesel Fuel.

I like last years draft. I like that we seem to be sloooooooooowly turning around, especially considering we had very few draft picks before the horse trading

Obviously, I'm a little concerned about QB evaluation, but we'll see how that works

Having said all of this, I retain the right to bitch and moan until we get turned around.

If Shanahan had come out and SAID that he was going to address qb in 2012 and that Grossman and Beck were merely stopgaps, everybody would feel more comfortable about the decision-making, but after taking Kerrigan and Jenkins there was no way Shanahan could do anything but support the quarterbacks he had and then take his lumps.

Some of you are so impatient. It took the Capitals 3-4 years of excellent drafting and good trades to put a team on the ice that won their division.

And the Capitals had a top 5 pick THREE times in four years :)

The Redskins don't have that luxury.

five years no ifs, ands or buts. Snyder has had real problems in the past getting quality coaches to come to DC. painful as this may seem....he needs to sit on his hands and give Shanahan every opportunity to succeed. should Shanahan fail....a quiet period of demonstrated support may encourage the better coaches to come to DC.

:thud:

Al, I couldn't agree more. This is exactly right. Unless the 4th year is an unmitigated disaster or there is some sort of mutiny or unforeseen cluster****, you have to give him all five years for the reason you stated.

Allen can't fire Shanahan as Shanahan is Allen's boss.

If I'm not mistaken, Shanny has final say on all football matters. But Allen being the GM can terminate the coach, if it were to come to that. If things really go south, I'm pretty sure Allen will be the last one standing. And don't forget Joe Gibbs is still in the mix as a VP I think as well

Do you think Shanahan had a worse situation than Harbaugh in SF?

Well, considering that the 49ers already had Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree, Patrick Willis, etc......I would say yes. Also, Harbaugh somehow has managed to turn Alex Smith into a decent quarterback - but even Smith has greater talent than Beck or Grossman so is it that surprising that he is now performing better?

After the 2009 season I thought the Redskins had the worst talent in the NFC along with the Seattle Seahawks.

After the Nolan/Singletary/Dilfer/Smith saga the 49ers were a complete mess. Harbaugh stepped into a situation in which, IMO, he had far better talent across-the-board to work with than any Redskins coach has had to work with in years. Harbaugh's going to look really good at the end of the season because he'll be turning around what was a dysfunctional team situation without the burden of having to do a rebuild simultaneously.

Very astute observation here. Before considering the idea of dumping Shanahan it's probably wise to consider who is going to be doing both the searching and making the final hiring decision. I'd much rather give Mike his full five years than trust the judgment of his employer yet one more time on that particular issue. A few years of demonstrated non-involvement, as fansince states, may make D.C. a bit less of a "Oh, HELL no!" option for competent HC's looking for a team to run.

You give Coach Shanahan all the time he needs. If he wants a new contract, give it to him. Ditto for GM Allen. Why? If Dan does otherwise, no decent coach and GM will step one foot on Redskins Park. This is Dan Snyder's last chance to get it right. So far, so good.

I cant believe how many people are willing to give Shanny sr Carte blanche lol, it just shows how terrible we have been that somehow guys are willing to tolerate so much crap and still have faith.

I would be willing to give until the end of next offseason, IF WE DONT COMPLETELY IMPLODE, CONTINUE PLAYING HARD AND SHOWING IMPROVEMENT. if we just give up and get hammered out like last season after the bye week, then I say sayonara at the end of the year.

Heres why, two of the huge misteps were signing Mcrapp and switching the defence. both of those set us back huge, in the cost of resources and in actual play, we may not have been the most talented team but we did have talent on this team when Shanny took over albeit not great lol.

Shanny needs to show us more of the reason we signed him, he needs to make chicken salad out of the chicken crap that he has to work with and he needs to get the guys he needs one way or the other.

If I see another offseason ignoring the Oline and taking huge chances on projects, I will not be nice about it and I iamgine im not alone.

Preach Patience all you like, its been 20 years of crap here and after watching us waste a year due to shannys ego before starting the rebuild, I doubt very many people will want to watch us tread water for another year. SUSTAINED AND REAL IMPROVEMENT, or buh bye.

I'd give him four years.

Last year was a waste. We tried our hand at a half-assed rebuild and predictably failed at it. If Shanahan had doubled-down on that strategy I'd fire him at the end of this year.

However, he seems to have realized this team needs a more total rebuild and has gone about making that happen this offseason. So I'd count this year and Year One, and give him three years to show some progress, and provided he continues to build this team responsibly in the off-seasons.

Ah, the Henry and Ryman approach is like the old Dan Snyder approach. Give them two or three years and replace. Rinse and repeat forever.

Been there, done that, got the annual jerseys. No thanks. If we go back to what you guys want, I'll stop being a fan of this team and will return if there is a new owner at some point.

I didn't say we had to win a superbowl. I didn't even say playoffs. I said we had to see some progress. I don't think that's asking for the world.

And I gave him a mulligan for last year.

I'm not sure how 'four years' gets translated into 'two or three years.'

LOL BB, my judgement of success isnt playoffs, its sustained improvement, that means we stay young but show improvement every year and fill holes with more than stop gap players.

I am not giving him a mulligan for last year , it was his judgement that resulted in us taking that extra year and he is accountable for that, however I am willing to judge him by what I see on the field, and that includes improvement.

as for being impatient? were you a fan during the never nervous norval years (sarcasm btw) we gave him a long amount of time and sa wnothing for it, I have seen turnarounds in a year and sustained turnarounds in 1-2 seasons, so I know it can be done.

You got to give him the 5 years. Look at the mess he inherited from Vinny. It will take that long to restock the team.

I give Shanahan and Allen credit for trying to stockpile picks. We are in dire need of quality depth.

Let them work their plan.

Four years. I think after that time Snyder will probably have to make the decision on whether to extend him anyway, like it was with Gibbs at the end of 2007.

Of course we don't know how Beck will play the rest of the season, but I expect Mike to draft a QB in 2012, probably get the guy some playing time that season, and for him to be our starter in 2013. If we don't have a playoff berth in that season, you have to strongly consider letting Shanny go. A winning record (9-7 or above) might save him, but I dunno.

If we wind up at 6-10/7-9 this season and then choose not to address QB in the 2012 draft (because I don't see anyone out there in FA, short of Drew Brees, who will be franchised), I wouldn't even blame Snyder for cutting the cord if we continue to flounder.

Sorry.....we might be doing some things right, but the FO has bungled the QB position the past two years.

Ryman, I am about twice your age and owe you no explantions regarding my fanhood.

BB for one thing you don't need to be testy, nobody is questioning your fanhood, I had no idea how old you are or if you were around for the "lets be patient" Norv years. IMHO anyone who was around for that should understand why some of us are leery about "giving it time." obviously with any coach there will be hiccups, my issue is wondering at what point do they stop being hiccups and start being patterns. Shanny sr has displayed an alarming lack of ability to adequately judge players who will fit his scheme and the D scheme he wants to run, having a couple home runs and a pile of strikes is no good, we need to start getting some singles doubles and triples mixed in there (sorry about the baseball analogy, now I need to kick my own ass).

I remember Norv ignoring the defence for a long time aside from some big name additions we invested almost nothing on the D side, I remember BAD special teams being a hallmark of those teams as well, remember Marty ball took a team that was virtually the same and went on a big winning streak at the end before Danny fired him.

BB, off topic. Do you have any idea how old Ryman is? If you're really twice his age, you're a whole lot older than I thought you were.

Some grumpy mo-fo's this week. Understandable, but it doesn't really help matters much.
