Finding ways to lose

Gregg Williams syndrome: the system is more important than the talent.

Speaking of things being bang on...

And it's not just Kyle either.

I like a lot of things the Shanahan's have done, especially Mike-a lot of things.

But one thing I perceive in him and he apparently passed this tendency on to Kyle, is what you refer to, Lanky, as the Gregg Williams syndrome. As you expressed it, the belief that the system can mold players-that they can "grow" into the system dominates. Players can grow into, or adapt to a system and play well within that system but sometimes there are limits to how well that adaptation can take place. Not every player's physical and mental skillset is as malleable as the Shanahans seem to think. Some are just physically not as well suited-or mentally not as well suited, or both, for some systems as they are for others. Some are hard-headed and refuse to try to adapt, others are both physically not suited and hard-headed-or sometimes there are combinations of all of the above. (a rather obvious reference to two huge headaches in the recent Redskins past-now thankfully gone).

I would be a bit more comfortable if I got a sense that the Shanahans realized that the system itself must be flexible at times and to a certain extent to accommodate the variations in players. There is no "one way is right and the other is wrong" here, I'm talking about finding an optimal balance between the advantages of the system-and Shanny's system has many pluses to it-and taking advantage of player skills and minimizing player weaknesses in order to optimize team performance.

It's ironic that when Joe came back Jon Jansen said the team was running a 1992 offense.

Well, with 290 pound offensive linemen running a scheme that won the Super Bowl in 1998, what are we now?

All of the principles of a spread attack and utilizing the liberalized rules to accentuate the passing game seem lost here.

Serv, I call it shanny syndrome actually lol, and I couldnt agree more.

some things they have done extremely well, and thats change the attitude from the club med atmosphere to one where guys want to work, some things they have failed epically at include obviously forcing a transition on defence, not modifying the offence to what we have or what works today and finding the right guys to fit.

the biggest fail IMHO aside from the defence, was Shanny going after and getting the QB of his choice in Mcrapp, on the surface, he did look a lot like Elway, strong arm, fairly mobile, experienced, but it was the mental aspects that he lacked so spectacularly. The way he needed several throws a series to get in a rythym where Elway might only throw a few passes but they would be bang on.

running back by committee is something Shanny pioneered in the modern day, but his Oline philosophy seems to be failing with alex gibbs there to coach guys up to be marginally dirty.Denver in Shannys heyday was famous for cut blocking on the away side, we rarely do it and it does have an effect on pursuit. The Broncos had some undersize guys but they compensated for it by moving well. we need a better FB as well because in this system a fB is a must have, but we seem to run a lot of one setback sets, this confuses me tbh. Shanny also called games quite differently than his kid, rarely would he go away from the run so quickly. I honestly thought that seeing the success that the patsies are having with 2 TE's who arguably arent as talented as ours, that we would maybe incorporate some 2 TE sets and be aggressive with them.

outstanding post. its not 1998 anymore a 290 pounder then is about the same as a 320 pounder now.
