Schefter tweets - Stay granted, lockout is on, complete win for owners

Millionaire players and billionaire owners aren’t the only ones losing money during the lockout. Here’s our rundown of which teams are cutting employees’ salaries and which ones have vowed not to do so:

Arizona Cardinals: A one-week forced furlough for all non-contracted employees. Cardinals coaching staff are contracted employees and have already seen their salaries cut by 35%.

Baltimore Ravens: An across-the-board reduction in non-player pay of 25 percent.

Buffalo Bills: Plan no layoffs or furloughs but have imposed pay cuts for all employees, up to 25 percent.

thats what is important too..the jobs of the normal people that are now struggling even more.

Yes. I sincerely don't understand why the pay cuts now. It's not like their losing money yet. In fact, they raised the prices of the replica jerseys, so theoretically, they should be making more. Why hurt the staff until you actually start losing money?

IMO they should both have to eat the costs to make sure the employees who have nothing to do with this dont suffer. people like jerry jones and dan snyder can afford it.

What a PR win it would be for the players if they were able to contribute to some sort of fund to help these people. I don't think many of them would be able to do so due to lack of savings, but if they could, that would be a huge win.

For those of you bagging on DeMaurice Smith:

3. NFLPA boss DeMaurice Smith watched the workout and met with the players for about 15 minutes afterward, answering their questions about the lockout. Smith, in a rarity, declined to speak with the media. But the players liked the opportunity to talk with him. “That uncertainty lingers,” Beck said, “so you want to know what is happening.”

wait a minute...capitalism is good for the players but not the owners? The Cardinals reported the other day they are losing upwards of $70 mil. Some other franchises are also having cash flow issues. When revenues suffer guess what gets cut?

I maintain: players...be careful what you wish for. you may end up with real world contracts.

Well, someone who truly was all about himself wouldn't pass up any opportunity to self-promote, IMO. The fact that he was out at Redskins practice just to support the players speaks volumes. Too little too late? I guess maybe for some of you - but how many of these incidents go unreported?

If a Pizza Hut owner locks out his dough-provider, he's going to start losing money b/c he can't make any pizza. This is not capitalism, its stupidity. :)

and Pizza Hut owners can fire players who do not perform on the spot. Their employees don't receive guaranteed bonuses, guaranteed percentages of gross revenues, no trade clauses...blah...blah...blah. The players have been planning these actions since at least Gene Upshaw formulated the strategy. I personally support the owners playing hardball and squeezing the players hard.....:clap2:

so open up the books and show us how they could possibly be losing that kind of money.

if im working at pizza hut and TGI fridays offers me a substantial raise , I can leave immediately, have you seen the free agency rules in the NFL? not so free. it cuts both ways.

Teams can cut or trade a player whenever they want, I'm not sure what your point is.

The players have been planning these actions since Gene Upshaw? You do realize it was the owners who locked the players out, right? Where in their scheme did 'manipulating the owners into locking them out' fit in?

1) True enough and I thought about that before posting. You're largely right...but there is some difference...most especially the Players Union....and of course all the contract items I mentioned that don't show up in the contracts you or I sign.

2) And you do realize that all sides have a strategy? Like any struggle there is a strategy based on probable courses-of-action each side expects the other to pursue. That is how this all started if you recall....move and counter move over what the next step would be. From the NFL perspective...they knew all the way back to Gene Upshaw days that decertification was a step the players' leadership wanted to follow....followed by a lawsuit THE PLAYERS FILED. They also know that the other players' lawyer in all of this - whose name escapes me at present - wants an end to the draft and all salary cap restrictions. The owners and the players are playing hardball. I have no particular affinity for the owners.......but I could care less about players who don't shoulder the real financial risks in all of this...but who already capture what?.....50 to 60% of total revenues? rich men suing other rich men. who cares? the fans end up being screwed NO MATTER WHO WINS.

The Players' Union can't do squat if a team wants to cut a player. Where the Union comes in is for injury settlements and making sure they get the guaranteed portion of their contracts when cut.

Of course the players had a strategy - they signed the CBA back in 2006 to get market value for their services and play football. Sounds like a great strategy to me!

I will agree that in the end, the fans will end up being screwed. That's the saddest part of all of this, because without the fans, the players AND owners have no money to squabble over. Its sad how easily this is forgotten.

and who decides market value? why the owners of course since they are hiring!!!! not the fans...not gross revenues...none of that: it's what the company is willing to pay. players can withhold their services if they like - but not get paid. the players went on strike and a CBA the owners didn't want ensued. either way...that is not germane to what is going on today...which is high stakes poker being played out in the courts. to repeat...I've reached the stage where I no longer care......if the Union lawyers get what they want the players will suffer in the long run (as always happens when Unions get involved) as will the fans....especially those at the bottom of the pay scale. I'm laughing at the absurdity of mega-millionaires like Manning and Brady filing a lawsuit ostensibly for "fair pay".... I hope these cats all roast in you know where while 14 million+ enjoy the perks of unemployment!!!

but if it makes you feel warm and fuzzy because there's a U somewhere in the conversation....go for it!!!!

This is interesting, apparently the NFL Coaches Association filed a brief yesterday calling for the lockout to be lifted. And the Redskins coaches were not included, did not want their names on that brief, evidently:

Have received a statement that says that the Redskins coaching staff didn't give its backing to the NFLCA's Amicus brief. ...

The statement from the Redskins coaching staff on the NFLCA's brief has 17 signatures on it.

I have verified the authenticity of the letter from Redskins coaching staff. Very interesting.

From the Skins coaches' letter: "We stand united with our ownership and the brief does not reflect our thoughts on the matter."

Hey, if you're planning a major operation in free agency the last thing you want to do is antagonize the guy who'll be signing the checks.

Agreed. I'm a bit surprised that coaches throughout the league apparently went in on this. That is interesting to me. I understand they want to show the players they back them to improve team morale or whatever, but I would think they could find other ways of doing it, aside from biting the hand that feeds them.

They don't really have a dog in this fight, do they?

a little quick to judge there Mike.

Lanky is standing firm for what he believes in vis player rights. I may have poked a bit at it - but nothing wrong with sticking to his principles. And I am voicing my disgust with a bunch of sqaubling rich guys - each trying to claim the high road.

the moment this went to the courts any hope of a quick turn-around ended. I hear all the "they just need to get together and fix this quickly" talk on the radio, TV, etc. But once it went to the courts...the stakes and timelines magnified.
