Health & Physical Fitness/Training Thread

Chris has helped me get to a level of fitness I have not been seen for decades. I think his approach/philosophy that exercise and getting stronger and nutrition are all habits we need to build into our lives is the key to it all. I'm not an angel and I still enjoy some things that are not healthy, but the vast majority of time I am sticking to positive changes. I feel good.

Your check is in the mail. 😉

Getting back on track. Managed an hour on the elliptical followed by another half hour on the bike. I really need to start doing weights, too, but I got lazy and am just trying to build my endurance back up first.

Biggest thing is just committing to incorporating into your weekly routine. I think *what* you do is less important than THAT you do it... but I can't recommend Chris enough if you decide you want to start adding some weight training. I am also glad to help (glad to share what Chris has taught me that is - I'm no expert).

Returned to cycling in January this year after a break of almost 3 years. Starting back again from scratch for someone who who raced competitively as an amateur up until I quit was tough. Even just sitting on the saddle for more than 20mins was torture. Before I quit normal weekend rides would be 5+ hours both days so quite a difference! But I’ve slowly built it up again and now I’m back into a reasonable shape physically and mentally again. I’m not quite in race shape, I’m not sure if I want to go back there again, but given the progress I’ve made it’s possible I could next year should I choose to do so. Most importantly though I’m enjoying it again. Don’t get me wrong on some days it’s still an effort to get out the door or to step onto the indoor trainer but that’s only natural. I always say that the hardest choice is to start.

Somewhere along the way I adopted a mindset change that has been transformative…I reframed ‘I have to workout today’ to ‘I get to workout today’. It has become a subtle but powerful distinction for me.

I don’t always want to, but I do regardless. Never once have I completed a training session and thought ‘I wish I hadn’t’ done that’.

I actually always feel better walking out of a workout where I wasn't super motivated before hand.
