The Front Office: Adam Peters and Roster Construction

My biggest fear for the year is we can’t run the ball, then opposing D’s will take away the flats and short routes and JD will either be running into traffic or throwing it away as he won’t have time to throw deeper. Hopefully more throw aways this year.
For whatever reason, I think we will be able to run the ball ok. Why? I can't quite put my finger on it, but if we really commit to the run, I think we'll be fine running the ball.

Game planning the run game really helps. And we didn't do any of that in preseason.

I will be very happy if you’re correct it would open up everything.

What’s the rationale for believing that though?

If the OL is depleted and piecemeal, that will impact the rushing attack as much if not more than in the passing game.

Sounds like wishful thinking to me.

Agree to disagree. I think those personnel losses affect confidence, right or wrong.
I think both you and Boone are both right. I don't think Dan Quinn coached last year with his hair (or lack thereof) on fire and tried to be bold and aggressive, even when he had the opportunity to do so. So in that regard, I think Boone is right that we lost the aggressive edge we had in 2024.

Flip side, if you are being aggressive and you know you're going to fail because you don't have the horses to be aggressive, well, that's not good either.

That said, we were 5-12 and were routed about 8 times. If you're going to go down, I'd prefer you go down swinging. And I don't think we did that.

It might be. I'm absolutely open to the possibility I am trying to convince myself it's going to be ok.

However, there's also this possibility: If Allegretti is healthy, there is only one different player from the planned starting OL of Tunsil, Coleman, Allegretti, Cosmi and Conerly. There is a re-shuffle, but 4 of the original 5 players are there. The difference is Tunsil out, Paul in. And Coleman is at LT instead of LG.

Now, I'm not going to say that's not a HUGE drop off in overall quality going from Tunsil to Paul. I get they are different positions, but you lose a top 5 LT and end up with a serviceable guard as a replacement because the starting LG slides to LT.

However, I do think the OL of Coleman, Paul, Allegretti, Cosmi and Connerly, which is mostly what they planned on from a personnel perspective, can be fine. I would feel better with somebody better than Paul. But also if Allegretti comes back healthy, having him sandwiched between Colemand and Allegretti, he might be ok again.

The lynch pin is Allegretti. He has to be healthy. If he's not and you have to sub him out and CenterX (Right now I assume Gublin) in, then you have MASSIVE problems. But that hasn't happened in a real game yet. So we'll see.

But they do have some pretty good depth outside of center. I'm betting they bring back Trent Scott and Moreau when they IR Newton and Tunsil tomorrow. If they do that, then they have Wylie and Scott as swing tackles. And I wouldn't be surprised if they start really working to see if Wylie could be a starting LG because Humphries could also be a swing tackle with Scott.

I guess I don't see the OL in as much disarray as others. We need to see it be productive for sure. The Tunsil injury is crushing. However, I don't think all is lost yet.

AP's selections and FA pickups need to hit this year. We have zilch for depth on this roster talent wise or so it appears. First 3 games will be telling. We start off 0-3 we may be looking at another 2025 season and at a minimum DQ gets fired, possibly AP too. DQ can try to save his job by saying a new OC and DC need time but it may not be enough to keep his job. However, GMs under new ownership are given a little bit more leeway.

If they fire the GM after only three seasons, Dan Snyder might as never have left.

What GM did Dan Snyder fire after 3 seasons? Rivera and his henchmen were kept through Dan's demise. Bruce Allen was kept for 9 years with varying job titles but still the same influence. Vinny was around for a decade minus one year of Schottenheimer.

Why do we need to judge the team's FO by "What would Dan do?"

That’s because you are assuming Allegretti is okay. There is zero indication he IS okay. He hasn’t even been able to practice. That’s the reality. So let’s assess based on reality, not best case scenarios. And the best case scenario is that our starting center hasn’t proven he can be an NFL center and hasn’t had any prep time in a brand new offense to prepare to try and be one.

I do think you are right that the OL, even on the worst case scenario, could outperform expectations. That is certainly possible.

I understand what you are saying, but there is also the fact that we didn't have real GMs, mostly just pods of lackeys with a few scout type guys who had no real power...

I don’t hear many calling for AP’s firing.
Maybe some are but that’s hardly the general feeling, so let’s not put that straw man up as what fans are calling for.

That being said - it’s not 1970. GMs don’t get a decade to turn a ship around anymore. That’s just how it is in today’s NFL. Average GM tenure is about 3 years.

Even if Allegretti is okay now, you can't assume that there will be zero injuries throughout the season. I think the preseason games showed our depth was clearly not up to NFL standards. So, we need to upgrade.

I think it's absolutely valid to question the current roster construction. There are some real questions, particularly at center and CB.

However, at least for myself, I'd like to see them play a few regular season games before passing any significant judgement. It's possible they know more than we do.

It's also possibilities. Peters is not as up to the task as he was billed to be. And we're the Titanic steaming directly into the iceberg.

Both are options. Preseason tells us nothing. We are going to have to wait a bit to see how it all plays out. I will say, it's concerning the energy the team has had the last couple of weeks. But who knows, that can flip also.

I will say that I'm still optimistic about the season. My definition of a successful season is still 11 wins and the playoffs. And I still think that can happen. I think they have enough talent and a top 5 QB to make that happen. If they could do it with what I view as a lesser roster in 2024, then they can do it in 2026. And yeah, I know, schedule. Whatever. I hand wave that until it actually happens. We were supposed to have a tough schedule in 2024 and it didn't work out that way. And Warren Sharp can blow it out of his ridiculous mustache with his Vegas win total strength of schedule nonsense.

I would be beyond ecstatic with 11 wins. I actually thin 9 or 10 wins will be enough to take the division.

Agree, which is why I say that Allegretti is the lynch pin. If he's not ok, it's a big deal. But maybe they know more and he is fine, and they're just being extremely cautious and he could have played the last couple weeks if it was the regular season.

I don't disagree they need to find another backup center. Which I still think they're going to do somehow, though how, I have literally no idea at this point.

I am less invested in the coaching staff for this initial five year Adam Peter's contract than I am the actual building of the roster. Plenty of coaches don't last the duration of a franchise building from ground zero and are not the coaches who end up getting to the promised land with the team. Building a roster is more than just landing a super star, you also need reliable depth pieces and sometimes in the draft that is what you end up with but then the next year a couple of picks end up totally transforming those units. I also believe that the coaching staff is also part of the evaluation being done during this initial period as well.

I probably would err on the side of giving AP the full five years of his initial contract regardless of what happens to any members of the coaching staff during the same window.

To me 11 wins is the bare minimum expectation for the season. It's Quinn and Peters' 3rd year. It's the 3rd year of what is probably a top 5 QB in the NFL. They've had 3 drafts and 3 offseasons at this point, and in their first year, they made it to the NFC Championship game.

You don't get to just re-set in year 3. It's supposed to be the culmination of 3 years of development. If we don't get to 11 wins, I'm going to be disappointed. I'm not necessarily EXPECTING 11 wins. But that's my expectation based on year 3 of the GM, Coach and QB. They hit on the QB. That's the hardest thing to do in the NFL. Now go win games.

10 wins MIGHT take the division depending on how much the division teams beat up on each other. If the Giants are actually significantly improved, and they can win 3 division games somehow, then I think you're right, 10 wins might get the division.

Ownership wants results now. It's a fast-moving ship anymore. Like everyone else I/we hoped AP would have turned the ship around in the right direction. He hired DQ. Again, DQ is probably let go of (if we fall like we did last year). Let's hope this team surprises out the gate. Tough 3 game start.

How anyone can sit here and except the lies that both DQ and AP told everyone about Amos having a sore ankle is crazy..Those two should not be trusted on anything thing comes out of their mouths
