The Front Office: Adam Peters and Roster Construction

Certainly don’t advocate being reckless with late summer trades, but it would be really good to see AP make a couple of shrewd moves to address the roster issues we currently have. Get ahead of the cuts and negotiate some moves.

- I don’t give him credit for Daniels. Everyone was picking either Maye or Daniels. As I said in another thread, it worries me he had McCarthy instead of Maye in his draft rankings. If we had had the #3 pick in the 24 draft and had taken McCarthy, he would’ve already been fired
Eh. I mean, do you give Polin credit for drafting Peyton Manning? It was the consensus pick, but he pulled the trigger.

- Newton is not only a bust but he was also a bit of a luxury pick given we already had Payne and Allen on the team. Also, if they wanted to go DT, the next two taken were T’Vondre Sweat and Braden Fiske. Both guys are starting DTs in this league
I don't think there are such things as luxury picks. You pick the guy who is highest on your board. Newton was a bad pick. I think it's as simple as that. Injury and ineffectiveness. And he probably is done in Washington. He probably lasts through next year's training camp, but he won't be guaranteed anything and he's easy and cheap to cut.

- Sainristil is currently a bust where things stand. This is a “what have you done lately for me league” and he was one of the league’s worst corners last season. For the record, in the trade back, everyone brings up DeJean but AP the next two picks after DeJean were Kool Aid (a legit starting CB) and Lassiter (Pro Bowl CB).
I don't agree here. I think he played well his rookie year. Last year, the entire defense was broken due to bad decisions, injuries and horrific coaching. Before I pass judgement on him, I want to see him play this season in what appears to be a better situation. I'm not entirely sure peak Deion Sanders would have looked good in our situation last year.

- Sinnott is currently a bust. Even if he ends up being productive, when you reach for a TE graded by consensus as a rd 3-5 pick, that guy better be a starter
I have said over and over, the consensus media draftnik board is just that, a media consensus draftnik board that relies on 1/3 of possible information, and has no input from actual teams. Relying on it is a meaningless exercise. You can find plenty of places where guys go above consensus and are great, and go after consensus and are great, and go before and they suck, and go after and they suck.

There is no such thing as a reach. That term was spoken into existence by Mel Kiper's hairdoo.

I agree he's currently a bust, but I put the bust on position match more than anything. He was a bad pick for Kliff's scheme. Peters should have known that. So don't disagree it was a bad pick.

- For Coleman, yes injury played a role last year but he lost his starting job to Paul after his poor play in the GB game. If he can play an average starting LT for a least 3/4ths of the games this year, he is a hit
He beat Paul out in camp for the LG job. But he played through injury in weeks 1 and 2, and that's why he lost his job.

He needs to stay healthy.

- You call Luke an elite KR but is he really providing unique value? Deebo and Ekeler were also both elite kick returners here.
I think if he continues to excel at ST, kick returning and such, he's got a good on the roster.

I also think the coaching staff didn't do him any favors in the way they developed him at WR. They asked him to learn all the positions at once, and specialize in nothing. He has the tools to be very good. I have been saying they need to just stick him somewhere and not keep moving him around. He was doing better as a receiver last year until he got hurt.

- Magee is an oft injured backup linebacker who was thought of so highly that AP decided to bring a starter in in FA in Chenal to pair with Luvu and then drafted Styles too. He is still on the roster so not a miss.
We'll see if he makes the final 53. My guess is yes. But he's going to have to play ST's in order to be active. I think he stayed more healthy last year and I don't think he's been banged up this year. But I don't really count 6th round picks when looking back at a draft. If they hit, whoopee. Most are out of the league in less than 3 years.

- JJB is a hit for a 7th round pick. Got some production out of him
Yeah, that was a good pick.

Big year for the 2025 class but it definitely isn’t one that makes you go wow. Bottom line is one major reason the fans were excited about AP is because SF absolutely killed it in Day 3 during his tenure. There is no Kittle, DJ Reed, Hufanga, etc that looks like it is coming out of 2024 or 2025 Day 3. Hopefully, Josephs can go hit a Pro Bowl caliber level down the road from this class
I'd argue Bill could be that guy. I think JBB is really good for a late round pick, and we'll see what happens with Josephs.

I'm more interested in seeing what the 2024 draft does. If they have to cut 4 of the 6 2nd/3rd round picks next year, that's going to be a real disappointment.

I think we overcomplicate these things.

Good players play well. It doesn't matter what the scheme is, who the coaches are, or where they were drafted.

Some GMs are great at finding good players. Other GMs struggle. So far, I would have to say that Peters is closer to that 2nd category than the first.

I called Will Harris a scrub and a poor excuse to replace Chinn from the beginning. Should’ve never been signed. Another bum the media here tried to polish and carry water for

Unfortunately, Adam Peters record as GM isn't too hot. Hopefully, his drafts and free agent signings (other than year one of free agent signings) shapes up better this and or next year. He may be getting close to being replaced if not. Here's hoping he and it does.

Year one of free agent signings is 50% of his time here that we've seen a return on the field...

Last year, was a soft off season, and Harris was a miss, but the rest were just depth guys. You could argue Kinlaw hasn't performed to what we want, but at $15M a year... not exactly a glaring contract for a rotational DT.

This is absolutely our biggest off season regarding Free Agency, and the additions are not small.

His drafts are weak

I believe we had the second most cap space remaining in 2025 at the end of free agency. AP, in retrospect, should have been more aggressive in signing more legit starting caliber players. Would've been cool, for example, if he had signed his former All Pro Hufanga vs Harris. Furthermore, they cheaped out on Demarcus Lawrence and should've brought in Diggs vs Samuel last season.

Great call on Hufanga. He was one of the FA's I really wanted and AP had familiarity with.

Having him under a 3 year deal would have solidified another position and given more consistency with a young talent

I didn’t say he was perfect, just that RWJ mentioned Free Agency not being too hot except for year 1, and that’s literally half the data we have.

Peters has missed, but I will not say I hold not getting Diggs against him. North of 30, 7 months post ACL, not a risk I would have wanted to take at the time. No, Noah brown wasn’t the answer, but I won’t hold Diggs against him.

Ultimately, the contract Diggs signed with the Pats was easy for the Pats to get out of after a year. Had he sucked last year for us, we could’ve easily moved on.

Juxtapose that with trading a pick for a guy on a 1 year deal in Deebo coming off the worst professional season of his career

Deebo the player was adequate. The team's willingness to get rid of him after he did okay makes it a bad trade. It's a shame they spent a pick on a toy for Kingsbury and ditched Kingsbury so soon after.

He was adequate but we could’ve just signed the better player in Diggs without giving up picks

I would say so far Peters has very mixed results at drafting players, but I also think we need some context on what the average of hits vs misses is for a typical GM and what that looks like when trying to build a roster up from the ground floor when you were handed ONE PLAYER from the previous regime that is worthy of sticking around (when was Bates drafted? So...2 players?)

The question is are we expecting something of Peters that isn't the norm, which is hitting on such a % percentage of players from the draft that the roster would be young & talent rich in three seasons? Free Agency is a different beast which I think we should judge differently due to various factors.

Mixed results? Not one player Drafted by AP besides JD would start on any of the NFC east teams..The guy just flat out sucks at his job.

I hate to say it but I’d say so far the drafting results are NOT that mixed. We’d love for them to become mixed. I don’t think expectations are unfair at all, nobody is expecting an unrealistic hit rate. Right now the hit rate is abysmal.

It really all depends on if some of the sophomore slumps rebound. Heard Sairnristil got a pick against the Ravens. So if Coleman, Mike, and JD hits from draft one that's okay. I think my issue is that AP's best hits so far our singles. He needs some homeruns. If JD stays healthy (need an o line for that to happen) that is a homerun, but no QB can be a superstar without protection. Otherwise, we still lack any stars from the draft picks.

As much as I like Bill, he had too much of an up and down year to be considered a home run. I do think we can think of him as a double or even a triple though for a seventh rounder.

One of AP's issues is kneecapping some of his picks in a manner that they'll never get to prove themselves as home runs.

1) Coleman would've been called a home run pick last year had he played a solid LT for us for 12-13 games
2) Sainristil is a terrible slot corner, yet the drafting of Amos forced him to stay there most of the year.
3) Magee flashed at times last year but is now on the roster bubble after the additions of Chenal and Styles
4) Lane and LMC are both natural slot receivers but we got Deebo last year and Diggs this year

I could go on more and this is not to say that acquiring Tunsil, Diggs, etc was wrong but it points to how things have played out

You can’t have a sophomore slump when you were a freshman flop. Most of APs picks haven’t ‘slumped’, they’ve disappointed from the start.
