Official Game Thread - Preseason Week 1 - Dolphins @ Commanders

Was glad to see that the new coordinates appeared comfortable. Didn't notice any delays, confusion etc between plays. Going to be growing pains from both but I get the sense neither will force "my way or the highway" like the guys they replaced. They are hungry to succeed and will put in the extra work.

Small thing: No delays of game. No false starts. Only one flag for covering up the tight end.

Pretty clean first game for the young coordinator leading his first offense and calling his first game.

I really, really believe our RB room should be White, Bill, Allen and Henry.

However… the issue is Ford, McNichols bring a ton of flexibility and skillset. So the young guys have to show their versatility to make that a thing.

But I’d keep those four at RB.

Receivers: Terry, Stef, Antonio, Treylon, McCaffrey or Lane (not both), Dyami

TEs: Chig, Bates, Yankoff, Sinnott

I didn't watch the game. I followed it on my ESPN tracker. I may have joined later into the game (2nd quarter) because I was working late. But within just the first few plays after I logged on.... it was a false start against Togiai on a 2nd and 8 (after an Allen 2 yard run) - pushed it to 2 and 13.

I think they really want that to be the room if they could make it work.

They could probably get either or both to the PS if they wanted to, and RBs get hurt, so it's really possible they go this way. I think they're trying to give the young guys reasons to not roster McNichols and Ford. But they have to take advantage of it.

The one question I have, if they carry 4 RBs, can they get all 4 of them active on gameday? They all have to play teams, or they would run into a numbers game on gameday.

But I’d keep those four at RB.

It would be absolutely shocking if they didn't keep all 3 of the draft picks, especially Lane as a 4th round pick last year who was a true weapon at punt returner. McCaffery, by reports, actually was having a really good camp and getting the most targets until Diggs was signed. It's doubtful they release him.

There seem to be 5 locks: McLaurin, Diggs, Williams, McCaffery and Lane. Then the question is what do you do with Burks, Van Jefferson and Diyami. I think they like components of all three of them. It's going to be interesting to see what they do.
My guess is they keep 1 of those guys in the end. Which one? Not sure.

I TEs: Chig, Bates, Yankoff, Sinnott
I think most of the predictor folks have it this way.

QB is going to be super interesting now. If Mariota is out, what are they going to do? I see no world where Hartman can make the 53. I thought they would put Athan Kaliakmanis on the PS, and just release Hartman to focus on his modeling career. But now? Maybe they carry 3 QBs. If that's the case, that's a roster spot squeeze somewhere else.

Sharp has been one of the negative nellies in the national media. I think he ranked the RB room and OL worst in the league, or something like that.

Not suggesting he's wrong, but he's been very negative about the team. Hence the comment Chris made.

Shoot. Foggy memory.

I'll buck the trend here and say there's no way I would keep Kaytron over Ford or McNichols. He had a couple good runs. But he also displayed that he's way too slow to ever even attempt a run to the outside. And the stat about all positive runs seems cherry picked to find something positive. . I thought #30 completely outplayed him.

I think it's way way way too early to pass judgement. One preseason game.

Keim did say they see Henry and Allen as essentially in competition and it doesn't matter to them one was a draft pick and one was an UDFA. I think the competition is really between them.

We need to see a whole lot more before making any type of judgement call.

#Commanders halftime overreactions!

🏈Both coordinators are not showing anything deep in their playbook (trust me, this is not how they looked at practice)

🏈Johnny Newton still leaves a lot to be desired, he is my most disappointing Peters pick until proven otherwise

🏈Seeing Tyler Owens as more of a linebacker interests me

🏈Really liked Jordan Magee’s speed and run disruption

🏈Sonny was playing on his heels, he and Leo weren’t stopping inside runs

🏈Robert Henry was the obvious standout heading into half, but Jaylin Lane had a couple of nice catches (extra points for no gloves)

🏈Did not like the bad reps by Chris Paul and Julian Good-Jones I saw

🏈I was feeling hungry until Hartman served up that quarter pounder with cheese

🏈Ricky Barber is showing something in this fight to cover the injured Tim Settle

🏈Can’t understand why Antonio Williams’ production has been so low during camp and now the preseason, the kid gets open

#Commanders beating the Dolphins 20-7 REACTION!

🏈I thought that there wasn’t a discernible drop off between the second, third, and fourth string players, which does speak to the bottom-of-roster depth

🏈They are hiding Antonio Williams and Daronte’s scheme

🏈Ricky Barber and Byron Cowart put on a show for that backup DT spot

🏈Johnny Newton, meanwhile, did *not* put on a show

🏈Robert Henry Jr won the day, Kaytron Allen had a couple of nice plays, but I wasn’t that impressed overall

🏈The “the ball is life” mantra is no longer false hope, they caught three picks and had a chance at two more

🏈Kaliakmanis has had up and down days at camp, but he just showed the world what we saw all summer, which is that his arm talent is above Mariota’s

🏈Sinnott and Yankoff both looked good moving in space and fit in this offense

🏈The opening series was really bad in the trenches, time will tell if that was a “first game” thing, or they are seriously in trouble

🏈I wish Antonio Hamilton Sr. was 10 years younger like we all thought he was

That has to be one of the absolute worst throws I have ever seen in watching football at any level: peewee, HS, College, NFL Europe, NFL, flag, whatever.

1. It's hard to tell if he was throwing to Diyami or McCaffery. ** This by itself is an indicator of how bad a throw this is. If you can't immediately tell where the ball was going, that's bad.
2. If he was throwing to Diyami, he's open. However, you have to drive it in to him between defenders. There's no way Hartman can make that throw. I'm pretty sure Daniels or Mariota could.
3. Also, if he was throwing to Diyami, he missed the throw by 8 yards. That's like missing a barn door from 15 feet away with a sniper rifle in the NFL. That's a BAD miss.
4. But throwing to Diyami is the wrong read, because McCaffery is wide open, lead him in front, and he probably walks in. At the very least, it's a super easy catch. So, if he was throwing to Diyami, bad throw AND bad read.
4. If he was throwing to McCaffery, he missed the throw by 15 yards. Which is kindof like failing to throw a rock into the Atlantic Ocean while standing in the Ocean in Ocean City Maryland. Like, how the hell do you do that?

Also, he had all the time in the world.

My God Man. This throw by itself might just be a "gots to go" situation.

Hall of Fame? That’s crazy! At least my post was reasonable saying 10 years of greatness together. 😎
Total underselling of the moment.
