Do we need big numbers from Diggs ?

Haskins wearing #7 was blasphemous, but Diggs has done enough in his career and is respectful enough of JT that I won't mind it

Theismann should qualify the number by saying that they can have it after they return a punt.

Haskins would have never done that, or been capable of doing it either.

Yeah, the team should never have let that happen.

I actually would prefer Diggs not wear 7. More because I don't like WRs wearing single digit numbers than anything. But it really doesn't matter.

If he wants 7 and Joe is cool with it, go with God.

And FWIW, I don't think 7 should be retired, and I don't have so much a problem with somebody wearing it. If Daniels had wanted it, fine. I think the retiring numbers should be reserved for HOF players. And Sean Taylor. The reason I put Taylor on the list is actually because I think some damn fool would want to wear the number down the road and that would cause a lot of people to be very made, and just having it retired saves everybody from themselves.

I was one of the old curmudgeons that liked it when the only number retired was 33, from Sammy Baugh. That was kindof a thing that was different about our team. You want your number retired, basically you have to invent the forward pass.

What?? Hell no! Stefon Diggs coming here for one season should not get Joe Theisman‘s number. No way. It should’ve already been retired a long time ago, and I don’t want to see Joe put in the position of having to be the good guy and say yes again. Diggs frankly ought to have more class than to even ask. I really hope ownership is smart enough to squash the idea this time.

Commanders only have 7 numbers retired. The 7th is soon to be Riggins who will be retired next year.

Every year of Josh Harris's ownership has had a jersey retired so far. Each of them are in the Hall of Fame, so it makes sense.

I do not believe in massive jersey retirements like the Boston Celtics, but I do think some numbers should be semi-reserved.

A Day 3 rookie shouldn't get Ryan Kerrigans (arguably the franchise sack leader) number it should be harder for a player to get. A 1st round pick? Ok. A high profile FA? Ok.

But a point in Diggs favor is that his NFL resume is great. For a non-retired number shouldn't that be enough?

60 rec 850 yards and 6 TDs would be pretty solid for a #2. Then McLaurin with 80/1200/9. I can see that as a real possibility.

I am more intrigued by the Diggs effect on Antonio Williams's development & growth. Terry will be Terry as long as he is healthy. I think there was a good chance Williams would end up at the WR2 spot eventually this season had Diggs not been signed so now it could shift Williams's role in the game plan to where there is less on his plate early on and if he is making strides during the season his role will grow on game day.

Williams will be a playmaker and turn heads this season being in Carolina I watched a few Clemson games and this kid is a solid football player runs routes well and solid hands and is football fast

But play calling and situations will factor into his numbers also

That’s really hard to do. I know Blough said it but I don’t believe it.

I think only 2 WR got 10 targets per game last year and one was Justin Jefferson. I didn’t look that up recently so I could be wrong.

If you go on the premise there will be 30 passes a game, the highest targets are probably going to Terry and Chig, there are probably 15 or so targets left between slot, RB and WR2.

I think you can pencil in RB for 5. And slot is a highly targeted spot in this offense.

So then to answer the Diggs question, how much is he playing in the slot vs outside?

I think he’ll get 4-5 targets a game in general.

It's because teams prevent him from being able to be open, targeted, and make catches.

Stefon Diggs, even at nearly 33, will eat teams alive if opposing defenses don't respect his talent. That is going to open up things for McLaurin in a way he has not had the benefit of his entire career.

Just having him on the other side with open up the entire offense can’t put 9 in the box to stop the running game and he will make them pay if the double terry

I think that's partially true. I think there are multiple factors to why Terry's been stuck on 1000:

1. The lack of other weapons, as you mention.
2. Idiot OCs for the first Jay, Norv Jr., EB for the first 5 years of his career. ** KOC was the OC for Bill Callahan as an interim coach, but Bill only let him call 7 passes a game, so that doesn't really count. For those Jay defenders, even you you say he knew what he was doing, he only lasted 6 games into Terry's rookie season before Ol' Man Callahan installed the "Run and Run and Run some more" offense so they could lose games closer.
3. QBs: The only QB who Terry played with until Daniels who could be considered good was Alex Smith for whatever it was, 10 games. Otherwise, Keenum, Haskins (RIP), McCoy, Kyle Allen, Taylor Heinicke, Garrett Gilbert, Carson Wentz and Sam Howell all just absolutely blow chunks. And I left off Fitzmagic because he played 6 snaps or whatever then broke his hip and retired. I'd argue there isn't a viable starting NFL QB in that group who should be starting games for any team at the point they played for Washington. Wentz was viable with the Eagles early in his career, then lost it for whatever reason. But he wasn't viable by the time he got here.

Terry has been about the only functional part of dysfunction since he got here. And it's everything, not just one thing.

Though I don't disagree getting more weapons will help pull coverage away from him. I don't necessarily believe that weapon has to be the other WR spot, I think it can probably be any other weapon, slot, TE, RB, even QB though that has it's other issues. However, Diggs is the second best weapon on the team right now, so it checks the box and I'm happy we have him. Well, third best behind Daniels. But again, we don't want him to run TOO much even though I want him to run more than most.
