2026 Commanders Training Camp

JP Finlay is blogging from camp. He thought they looked good on day 1.

Other reports suggest the offense struggled today. Terry McLaurin said something to that effect in an interview.

Oof, he essentially said Julius Good Jones (I've got the name right?) was bad enough at Center to torpedo a series. He implies, I think, that JGJ was so bad it was difficult to evaluate the receivers on that series.

Side note, interesting that Quan Martin was getting first team work as a 3rd safety for goalline drills.

Yeah I heard a mention someplace else that once Allegretti went out they experienced some bad C play. Sounds like they will be scouring the available FAs and waiver wire for OL with C experience.

It also begs the question, do they move one of our other IOL to take some snaps there with Gulbin and would Coleman be one of them? They initially wanted him competing with Paul for the LG spot

Lets see how Quan holds up there. I recall Daronte bringing his name up in his opening Commander interview

This really stood out in Finlays day 2 report, especially the word "maybe". Why maybe? JBJ should not have been the veteran backup because he lacks experience.

"With Allegretti out Julian Good-Jones got to work with the starting offense, and the results weren’t great. JGJ has been mostly a practice squad player throughout his NFL career. In fact he’s been active for only one game: Week 17, 2023, a 38-10 loss to Dallas where he played two offensive snaps.

Now that’s not a reason in and of itself to freak out. 1) Quinn says Allegretti will be ok. 2) NFL rosters are currently sitting at 90 men. By the end of August those rosters will be at 53/70, so there will be experienced centers either hitting the wire or available to poach off other practice squads. Maybe this Allegretti calf issue will encourage Adam Peters to add a veteran after roster cuts."

I've seen Nick Martin play center. If JGJ is bad as Nick Martin, I'd be freaking out.

I remember the "Is Terry a true No.. 1 receiver" chat both here and on ES. Ironically, last time it really flared up was when Aiyuk was getting into a contract dispute with SF and a bunch of people wanted to trade McLaurin plus assets for Aiyuk. But I think the core of the argument is some people seem to think there are only four or five actual number one receivers in the league. When they say number one, they mean super elite, something a few levels above all pro.

Terry's been in that very good range. He's not Jefferson or Chase, but a tier below. It would have been interesting to see discussions of Terry if his best QB prior to Daniels wasn't Hienike. Really, he's only had one year with elite QB play and one might argue only one year with good QB play and his numbers in 2024 were his best. In some ways, that's part of the reason why I do expect Chig's production to be better than it has been in the past because Terry's was and OZ's was, etc. I don't disagree with SIP that we should depend on our QB turning water into wine or cabernet into champagne, but we should anticipate that Daniels will elevate whoever he plays with.

Still, there's only so much you can elevate canned tuna. Terry was already a good player without good quarterback play. He was routinely talked about as one of the underappreciated receivers in the league prior to Daniels even with bad quarterbacking so it just makes sense to shop for higher quality ingredients. If Daniels can raise the letter grade of the talent he has why not get him the best stuff and go Micheline Star?

Yeah Terry is the one hold over gem from a mediocre era of this organization. It's a shame a huge chunk of his career was producing numbers through the chaos and uncertainty of the Snyder era. As a fan, it is one of the biggest reasons I would love to see a Championship won on Jayden's rookie contract because I am thinking that could be about the time Terry is hitting the "different role with different type of contract or good luck to you, sir" twilight years of his career and I would hate for him to miss out on something he has put in the work for his entire career.

Ok... so thought of the day

The Vikings have had a high degree of success with QBs under KOC. Can we attribute any part of that success to having to play against the Brian Flores defense in practice.

Does the exotic blitzing scheme help fast forward a QBs development? [Im sure you can see where I'm going with this].

And yes, I'm sure there's more to it than this, but wondering if this plays a larger part than we've thought?

Any updates on Burks or Allegretti's injuries?

Burks was foot soreness, Allegretti was calf strain. Neither was thought to be serious.

Mitch brought this up on JPs pod that the two positions which were the biggest "lightening rods" on offense were the WR2 and C. And now one potential starter at WR is already hurt, as is his way, and the starting center is hurt and there really isn't any backup plan.

Eeek.

With luck maybe the Broncos will release Michael Deiter.

I did not say good luck BTW.

They'd have better luck moving Conerly there than Coleman. Coleman has the prototype OT body. Long arms, broad shoulders. It would be a little too easy for these thicker DT's to get into his chest when he's coming up after handling snaps.

They could try I guess, but there's probably a reason that Centers have pretty short arms compared to OTs.

Is there any coverage of training camp which isn't podcast or YouTube videos? I can read articles...but seems like almost no content is written anymore.

The best reporters tweet about the plays they’re watching during practice, so if you have twitter you can read their updates there
Don't have twitter. They've made it much harder to post content. Way back when, people would post gifs of training camp plays, but that hasn't happened in years.

Keim and Finlay blog about camp:

I think the Washington Post still has coverage, but I don’t really read newspapers much anymore. The last I read it regularly it was not the same as it was back when Tony Kornheiser was writing bandwagon articles. You’ll probably like the media thread if you’re interested in this sort of thing:

Problem is a lot of these articles are like a day or a day and a half old. They keep the newer content for that training camp day to podcasts/videos.

Nice tidbit.

Apparently, the coaches have been blowing the play dead when JD5 starts to scramble. They make him go back and go through his progressions. They are trying to break the habit of him bailing out if he doesn't see a receiver break open immediately.

That is good news if the protection can hold up. While scrambling is one of his top qualities, it also gets him banged up. So it is both his superpower and his kryptonite

More time learning to read defenses will give him the ability to make quicker decisions and hopefully learn to trust himself and some of his receivers.

DQ said Burks is back at practice today
Bates out a couple weeks with hammy
Allegretti out today, day to day possibly a week.
