(New Poll) The Washington Commanders Brand 2.0: Beer Drinkers and Hail Raisers

How do you feel about the Commanders Brand 2.0?

  • Vastly improved, if this is THE brand moving forward I’m satisfied.

  • I like the direction, but I still feel more to do. I will/have specified in thread.

  • I don’t like this new direction. I didn’t like the old either. They can’t make this work for me.

believe what he has stated very clearly is that we are going to be the Commanders. I don’t think he’s ever stated forever until the end of time. Again, just my two cents on the matter.
I believe the phrase he used was " stick with " Commanders, and yeah, I get the same feeling from his comments that you do. " Things up our sleeve" was another one.
It may never change, but I agree, I don't think the door is completely shut on the name never changing, and there are a couple of windows open, like we've talked about before, with the new stadium and the 100th anniversary in the not too distant future.

I’m only speculating that if they establish this Greco-Roman identity, it may open up the door later to something else, probably to coincide with the new stadium.

I have nothing to base that on at all other than intuition.

I don’t understand this comment. They have clearly and overtly already established the Greco-Roman branding and are doing it as we speak. That is the direction they are going. The stadium plans have columns for Gods sake :). It’s not an ‘if’.

What I’m suggesting and maybe I’m not being clear enough is that I think they are using the visual identity to establish the name…not the name to establish the identity. A Cowboy is a Cowboy. An Eagle is an Eagle etc. etc. A Commander(s) is…well lots of things depending on the context. Now they are establishing the Greco-Roman variation of “Commanders”. They are doing this out of necessity, but they’re still doing it.

I agree they are clearly establishing the Greco-Roman theme. I think that leaves open the possibility later for a more fitting name based on the Greco-Roman theme. If the only thing missing down the road is an overtly Greco-Roman “name” after you have spent several years solidifying that branding…maybe it opens the door.

You would think Harris & Co. would have been told before the purchase of the team, whether a name change was possible.
After they bought the team, Harris and Rales both talked about doing some " testing " on the name.
I think, for whatever the reason, this has been an ownership decision.

He can absolutely change the name, owners are allowed to do that. Normally when it comes to logos/uniforms they have to wait five years, but that doesn't apply when a team is bought by a new owner. Remember he also said changing the uniforms wasn't a priority back in 2023-24...but now they have changed them for the better. I think the train for changing the name that doesn't have 'The Stench of Snyder' will gather steam after the alt logo is adopted full-time by next season (my prediction, at least.)

I think Harris can change the name too, but I think the real question is "is there any benefit to reopening this can of worms?" I don't think there is. No matter what the diehards who loved the old name feel, having more name changes than Super Bowl wins would return this team to being the punchline to embarrassing jokes that drive away new fans the team so desperately wants. And that's without considering the fact that there will still be no name that everyone agrees on.

The name change was a scar. That scar will never fully heal. Fans can keep picking at the scar, or they can let it heal as much as it can and be done with it. It will never be pretty, it will never be as good as the untouched name. But I have come to terms with the team not having a name I wanted.

Yeah, I'm not saying he can't change it either. Some people seem to think he's been told by the League that he cannot change it, and my point was, if that was the case, he would have almost certainly known that at the time of the purchase, and if he was told that, why did he and Rales talk as if it was a possible ( ? )

Yeah, I think if he couldn't change the name he would have said so too. I'm sure the other NFL owners have to agree with a proposed new name, otherwise this team would have changed to the Washington Slack-Jawed Yokels many years ago. :)

But I don't think changing the name again would be a bad thing...I doubt fans will complain about all the changes, especially if the new name was an improvement over the old one and doesn't remind anyone of He Who Shall Not Be Named.

For me, one possibility could be they plan to change the name with the new stadium. If that is the plan…there would be no good reason to tell us that now, and we would be getting answers from Josh along the lines of the answers we have been getting. “We are sticking with Commanders”. We still have 4 more seasons at Northwest to go.

As a fan base we may be all over this by then. Especially if the is a Lombardi within those 4 years.

If RFK opens in 2030 and we are still called the Washington Commanders on opening day, we will have our answer on the long-term.

Possibly, but I still think the 100th anniversary in 2032, would be an opportune time.
Why would the HOG change the name at that time? It would mark the 10th anniversary of Commanders. JD5 would be embarking on his 9th year in the league. We very well could have Commanders inscribed on a Lombardi trophy. Memories and attachments will be formed by a significant chunk of paying customers…

And then we’d change the name again? Sounds preposterous to me. Only a tiny notch less so if you’re suggesting the name change coincides with RFK 2030.

Seems obvious to me sticking with Commanders heading into 2025 was the least bad option among a pool of choices that did not include going back to Redskins. Hard for me to understand arguments otherwise but I don’t really care about that debate now. It’s the idea we will change the name again several years from now that really baffles me.

Perhaps you name change hopefuls believe Redskins has a shot at returning? Even if that were on the table in 2030, or beyond, I don’t think it would be worth the investment by then. Absent the team going winless for the next 4 years and JD5 falling into a sinkhole mid game, the Commanders name will have laid roots too costly and too tedious to get rid of.

Why would the HOG change the name at that time ?
If they were, it would be as good a time as any.
It would mark the 10th anniversary of Commanders.
Don't think anyone cares.

This is certainly debateable.

You keep bringing this up, and no one here is talking about this.

Not a chance in hell for Redskins ever returning. Nor would I want it to at this point because the negative attention would be intolerable.

We can live with Commanders and hope for Sentinels, Spartans, Centurions, Gladiators, etc. etc. eventually. There is nothing wrong with that. Maybe we get to the point when literally nobody cares about this issue anymore but we are still not there yet.

It's crazy that all of those names are better than Commanders!!

Exactly. From what I saw in various places, the new uniforms brought a another wave of " Now ... About this name."
You seem to want to change the name.

I’m asking you why you want to change the name.

From the HOG perspective, I can’t see how a name change would be worthwhile unless the perception of the name took a drastically negative turn from where it stands today.

I think you feel differently and I’m trying to understand the perspective.

In my professional life experience just because you may do something doesn't mean you can.

Discretion is often the better part of valor. If the League has enough backroom pressure so that Harris feels he cannot change the name again, it would be a poor move to let on that is the case. It would make the League look bad and him weak. I may be totally wrong, but I suspect there is more league pressure to not opening that can of worms again than we will ever know.

I think if the HOG thinks they can make more profit by renaming the team they will do so. Especially if they involve the fans in the choosing of the new name, which will increase fan happiness and lead to more profits, etc.

…because to be blunt Commanders is mid at best. We could do better. Some people flat out hate it, some people are like me and think it’s….meh…others just want the name issue to be settled.

Wherever they land on the issue from managing it, nearly everyone I know WOULD change it if they had the power to do so.
