The 2026 Free Agency Thread

What frustrates me most is the lack of stability after this year Jayden will have to learn another new set of weapons because maybe we have one more year of Terry and Williams, but we still don’t have a two and even three is because it”s unlikely that Van Jefferson, Burks or Dyami are long term fixes. Even Terry isn’t a sure bet for next season.

So while I can imagine lemonade for this season it bothers me that we won’t have ingredients on the shelf for next year. And none of Diggs, Hill, probably Aiyuk resolves that.

Yeah I am guessing what happens is even though some who cover the team say that Terry is likely gone because he will be 32 and will be getting 35 million -- i bet he stays because they have no choice. And big time WRs really don't hit the market easily anymore. They are hot commodities.

Its a WR rich draft, I feel like they are boxed in to take one, maybe two.

I think Terry returns too. Actually, I hope that's the case, but it is a case of diminishing returns with him. Father Time will win at some point. But again, even with Terry and even if Terry is still good in 2027, we will still only have one quality wide receiver... two if Williams works out. So, the cupboard is bare.

I think we can make due and even be fine this year. I don't like having to reinvent the wheel every season. I really would like Daniels to have a wide receiver corp he can grow with for a few years. So, my frustration is not with 2026, but 2027... and like I said before neither Diggs or Hill solves that (even if I would like one of them for this year [assuming Diggs can clear himself and isn't a monster predator])

Lucky time to be boxed in then!

The way it feels to me at WR with some hyberbole to make a point

A. Season 1. Was not a high priority but then again they probably thought it was a rebuilding year

B. Season 2. Let's run it back. if Jayden can do it with Zaccheus -- damn right he can do with Chris Moore, KJ Osborn, etc. We got maybe the best QB in the NFL, he will elevate ANYONE

C. Season 3. Oops we got a bit full of ourselves and learned that Jayden is mortal. We will chase WR and add weapons, we get it. Crap Pierce decided to stay and Doubs would rather go to NE but no problem we will get Aiyuk on the cheap -- oops Aiyuk is a bit crazy and is attacking his pal on social media, he's now not in play either.

Lets sign someone else if Josh gives us the budget to do it, if not lets rationalize how we were just unlucky in FA and hey maybe our WR by committee thing can work?

Now I hope of course they end up right. But if they are wrong. The zillion narratives like what's below make Peters a punchline -- and like any successful person he likely has a healthy ego and goes nuts to address the spot next off season

13. Jayden Daniels, Washington Commanders

Unfortunately, injuries kept Daniels sidelined for much of his sophomore season, and now he enters his third season with Terry McLaurin and little else on the perimeter. If Daniels is going to take Washington back to the playoffs, he’ll need to elevate a group of receivers, including Luke McCaffrey, Treylon Burks and Jaylin Lane and Dyami Brown, none of whom have ever posted a 500-yard season.

no way #25. While lol I've been part of the chorus not loving what Peters has done for the offense. I love what he's done for the defense. And no of course I think this offense will be better than the defense because of Jayden. But that front 7 IMO is loaded.

JP Finlay was talking about this with Tischler on their last podcast about how the national media has like zero expectations for this team. It's as if 2024 never happened.

Speaking of which, has anyone heard a peep out of BA since he imploded a week ago? Sad that it took him destroying his future to learn to shut his yap

I'll quibble a bit because I'm me.

B. Season 2: We liked what we got going last year but we need youth. Let's bring back one of OZ or Noah and hope one of the young guys emerge. As a safety net let's get some graybeards we can make do with just to play it really safe. We good with that plan? Good. Fine. Ooh! We can get Deebo on the cheap, too so let's sign him and re-sign Noah over OZ because if Brown stays healthy there's more upside. Yeah? Yeah! Okay, let's get it done.

And then injuries and holdout happened and we never even got to see if the plan could work. Still, a plan that never worked is a failing plan even if on paper it was "okay."

Nope. It's possible even BA realized he took it too far. Probably got scared by all the reports that the Commanders were no longer interested.

Keim has said on two different podcasts that the front office's thinking going into 2025 was essentially this:

A. They knew they were taking a risk at wide receiver.

B. They believed one of K.J. Osborn, Elijah Moore, or Michael Gallup would emerge and make the position work for at least a fall back choice -- ala one of them would be that years Zaccheus.

That doesn't strike me as much of a youth movement. Taking Lane in the fourth round was a worthwhile lottery ticket, but that's what a mid-round receiver usually is—a flyer. Around here, we sometimes talk ourselves into Day 3 receivers becoming major pieces, but if a team is truly serious about upgrading wide receiver, they typically invest first- or second-round capital.

To me, the plan felt much more veteran-driven. The expectation seemed to be that Terry wouldn't slow down, Noah Brown would finally stay healthy and lock down the Z receiver spot, Deebo would handle the slot, and one of those veteran additions would provide enough depth.

I thought it was a flawed plan from the start.

I've seen people say it's easy to criticize now with the benefit of hindsight, but I was saying the same thing last summer. It looked like a risky approach then, and unfortunately that's exactly how it played out. And it wasn't just me—plenty of others questioned whether they had done enough at wide receiver before the season even began.

I'm guessing AP didn't want to risk signing Pocic who is coming in off the Achilles. He is a really good C when healthy. According to various sources I've read the contract is very reasonable. Hopefully this isn't a missed opportunity. I will keep fingers crossed with Allegretti but he scares me some and not sure of who will be his backup as Gulbin is raw and nott sure about Good-Jones.

The Ravens are adding a veteran center to compete for the starting job.
Former Browns center Ethan Pocic, who started 97 games in nine NFL seasons before tearing his Achilles last year, has agreed to terms on a deal with the Ravens.
The one-year deal is worth $3 million with another $1.5 million in incentives, per The Athletic's Jeff Zrebiec.

Disagree here.

We want the rookie to compete for the job. During OTAs I might be misremembering but I think they gave him some time with every unit. Although maybe it wasn't the 1st team?

If you sign a veteran you're cutting the rookie and hoping he doesn't get poached off the practice squad. No team is keeping 3 centers. 2 at most.

So either the rookie makes it as the backup or is cut? Are you sold on Allegretti being a good starting C? Especially after how hard they went after Linderbaum and that they have misplayed the Biadasz release?

I am not saying the rookie doesn't make the squad but there were definite questions about his readiness. It often makes time to develop OL. Part of me is saying Pocic could be a much better option than Allegretti.

Thats a lot riding on someone who tore their Achilles in, what...December (?) to come back to form. He's also 31 years old.

Old & injured. Sounds right up our alley.

I get the concerns with Allegretti and a rookie Day 3 Center. But chasing Pocic is not something I think we should do. I'd rather have Allegretti and Gulbin get more snaps and familiarity with the new OL coach, the new OC, and the new Scheme.

By not having Pocic, we can have the two guys get 50% more snaps in training camp to figure things out.

That's part of why our WR2 situation seems bleak. We have an open competition of like 4 guys. It's going to be tough for Jayden to trust timing with any of them getting significantly less snaps than if it was just 2 guys.

I took some grief for quoting this same fan on another point. lol, i know its not JP Finlay or whomever. But look I see it the same way, that why I am quoting it.

They sign a WR like Diggs it changes the trajectory.

nope the idea that Sinnott would get more play in multiple TE sets doesn't change my view, people telling me Terry will be healthy just because doesn't change my view, or pretending that Chig is the first time Jayden will have a TE as his #2 target doesn't change it either, or this brass and some in the local media upon further thought they will be fine/

I don't think the Vegas 7, PFF 7.5 wins is nuts. I think they are somewhere between 7-10 or 9-8 as is. 10 wins if they add a Wr, maybe even 11.

The problem with the point JP Finlay and others are pushing, that lots of teams have had success without a legit WR2 so therefore so can Washington is that Adam Peters apparently had this same mindset going into the 2025 season. He actually let the best WR we had not named Terry McLaurin walk for chump change, and doubled down on injury plagued guys and project WRs who have never proven they could be durable or consistently productive. How'd that work out for AP?

Peters clearly thinks the WR room is subpar - otherwise he wouldn't have tried desperately to upgrade in early free agency. He wasn't successful and that's not necessarily his 'fault' - there is a ton of competition for skill position players in free agency and players ultimately make their own choices. But the fact that Peters swung for the fences on several potential upgrades is a clear indication he doesn't believe 'we are fine' with the guys we've got. Maybe the draft changed that a little. But our WR room is still highly suspect.

If Peters is going to make a final big addition, it will happen in the next 10 days. They will want to get that addition in here for Training Camp.

My issue with Finlay, who I like, and some of the others is that they're pointing to things that almost every team has as if somehow its unique to Washington or is special here. Yes, Washington has running backs who can catch the ball. So do a lot of teams. Yes, they have pass-catching tight ends. Again, so do a lot of teams—and in many cases, those teams have players with much stronger resumes than ours.

Then there's the "Blough will scheme it up" argument, which honestly makes me cringe. It's becoming the default explanation from some in the local media for why the receiver room isn't a concern. Grant Paulsen went there on a recent podcast, even while acknowledging that Sean McVay—Keim has said he heard the same thing—admitted he struggled as a first-year play caller and really took a leap in Year 2.

So Grant, who I also like, is essentially saying Blough is going to have rookie growing pains while simultaneously treating him as the secret weapon that's going to make this receiver group work. That's a lot of rationalizing for me.

Look, maybe all of the best-case scenarios happen. Maybe Ben Sinnott turns into a star. Maybe Luke McCaffrey develops into the kind of player his brother became. Maybe Blough breaks the mold and is an outstanding play caller right away. Maybe Rachaad White becomes prime Austin Ekeler as a receiving back.

Could all of that happen? Sure. I don't know.

What I do know is that's a whole lot of maybes. If you're trying to build a legitimate contender, you don't want your offense resting on that many optimistic projections.

Even Keim, who's become more supportive of the offseason moves, has repeatedly said this roster has a major problem if Terry McLaurin gets hurt because there's no true No. 2 receiver to step into that role. To me, that's the biggest issue of all. Every team would miss its No. 1 receiver. But I think Washington would be hurt far more than most because there's no proven player behind Terry capable of carrying that load. That's the risk I've had a hard time getting past.

lol, sign Diggs and I endorse everything. But its tough for me to look at this team playing with this tough schedule and thinking stuff like wow will Blough dazzle and or yeah our Z isn't getting open but hey we can throw to Racaad White try to stop that. Or pretend Zach Ertz never existed and go wow Jayden now has a TE as his 2nd target how novel.

Honestly, I think we've said all we can say on this and there's nothing more to add.

I'd love us to get one more trustworthy, vetted weapon. Without that, we are at best fragile.

On the negative side of the game of ifs:

Terry gets hurt or he gets old. None of the other receivers step up and the rookie plays like a rookie. Chig is a one-trick pony at TE and can be canceled and is just not good enough to be the #2 target. White is JAG.

On the positive side of the ifs:
Terry comes back and has a Terry-like year. Luke shows consistency. they guessed right about Williams in the third round, and Burks, Dyami, and Van Jefferson cobbled together do enough good things that we are fine. More, Chig was held back by sub par QBing and breaks out and becomes someone impossible for linebackers to cover and difficult for safeties to tackle. Bill nails down his pass pro, and White picks up the slack that we lost when Ekeler went down.

But really, we've said it all. We've turned it over and inspected it from every direction. I really can imagine this working, but I can also imagine one injury derailing it and expecting zero injuries in football is a fool's game. So, I'm going to hope that the positive side of ifs work out and that we get a surprise upside signing or trade. Because why not hope for both.

I can imagine it working. If #1 Terry stays healthy and Antonio is as good as I think he will be and can stay healthy -- he was often banged up. If I had to pick a surprise maybe its Luke. All the other arguments -- retreads emerging, mid round WRs energing, run of the mill things like a pass catching TE-RB, and we got the dude to scheme it up feels like either fluff or betting against the odds.

I can imagine it not working. Terry getting hurt would be a disaster with this configuration. Antonio as a rookie takes time. And guys who have been just guys remain just guys.

50-50 to me. Banking on good luck. Maybe they are due for good luck. 2024 as lucky as a team can get. 2025 as unlucky as a team can get.

My whole point at doubling down is man do I see Diggs as a game changer. I agree with that fan's post. I don't usually feel this way where one player is that much an X factor let alone one who supposedly wants to play here, fits a need, and is just sitting there for the taking.

If Antonio Williams is going to play on the outside, Diggs won't be taking any reps from him because Diggs will likely play in the slot. I see it as a win-win.
