In fairness, Oreos are a product of Nabisco and Mondelez. Not exactly a smalll company. If you rose to market for a multi-billion dollar company and probably one of the top ten snacks in the world, you aren't small time.

Still, it was pretty hard for Snyder et al to botch a uniform rebrand since they wanted to keep the colors and yet somehow they managed it.

Although Snyder made a fortune, he didn't build it by running a large conventional organization. Owning an NFL franchise requires leadership, delegation, and organizational skills that are very different from those needed to succeed as an entrepreneur. Those shortcomings became apparent during his tenure as owner.

The NFL should have learned a lesson with his tenure here on what not to do as well.

He made a killing for a long time as Redskins owner because he used those same approaches to maximize profitability. But in terms of creating a high quality product that could consistently win, you can't say he didn't 'try' - but he just didn't know what he was doing. He likely created so much ill-will over the years that his fellow NFL owners eventually turned their backs on him and weren't willing to provide cover/protection for him when things began to unravel. The fact that the Redskins brand used to be a league leader in profitability (which all of the league benefitted from) and that in the end even that was evaporating, sealed his fate. The other owners wanted him gone and when they could no longer point to Snyder's revenue generating machine as a rationale to accept his other unsavory qualities and behavior, that paved the way for the league to finally rid itself of the guy.

Yep, the other NFL owners were willing to tolerate his buffoonery so long as it didn't impact how much money the team/league made. Once the revenue started dropping, they were on him like a pack of rabid hounds.

Under Snyder/Wright's mismanagement, it's stunning how many 'fails' this team had. It was bad enough before Wright was forced on the team by the NFL...which ironically only made things worse. It's true what they say: a fish rots from the head first, which explains why some poorly-owned teams (Cardinals, Bengals, Browns, Titans) may have some success for 1-2 seasons but can never sustain anything... other than losing.

I never would tell Washington to not bring back the past since there are way too many fans of that branding. What I want to know is when will they actually stop. Every piece that has been slapped onto the Commanders brand has literally NOTHING to do with the name itself. The helmet on Major Tuddy is the only branding that is Commanders-centric. And no, the Greco-Roman spear doesn’t count because it is a loophole to bring back the Redskins spear. The crest is just words.

Anyone who is happy with what we have and want nothing more added, clearly hate the Commanders name and wants every opportunity to bring back the Redskins name, which will never happen. I don’t love the name but I believe in working with what we were given.

If our identity will never be focused on a specific Commander or a specific theme, that doesn’t mean we should only have the W as our Commanders-centric brand. Chargers can have a lightning bolt that deviates from their rally-cry origins, Browns have the bull mastiff to deviate from the owner origin, so why not have an image to be our identity that is Commanders focused and not reliant on the past ?

I will never stop promoting the German Shepard but also the dog tag shape as that identity. But that doesn’t mean it can’t blend with our recent brand additions. Using the dog tag wrapped on the spear as a substitute for the feather is a good transition idea. Using DC flag in the dog tag is a nice wink.

I know I will never be heard. But if we are the Commanders, then we need to sometimes actually be them and not just wishing to be the Redskins.

It’s also just pretty weird to work something so specific into the branding. Plenty of people out there have nothing to remember their lost loved ones by but the returned dog tags they were identified by. Monetizing that and incorporating it into a sports brand is absolutely silly, some would argue bordering on insulting. And I’ll avoid making it political but I’m the furthest thing from fetishizing the military like Rivera, so for me to be saying that, you know it’s borderline.
