Covering the Commanders: Keim and Company Discussion

There is conjecture on just about every possible thing this team could ever do - so when some of that conjecture comes true, I think it's less about 'leaks' than that every potentiality has been debated ad nauseum and something has to prove to be correct, lol...

This is the most disciplined Front Office of our lifetimes. That's not a high bar, but I think it's true.

Some of the conjecture, yes lol from Keim has been very specific and turned out correct.

But yeah Peters definitely does keep a tigher ship no doubt.

I'm not saying no one has insider info. You've done a great job of giving Keim his due on that front. I'm just saying when guys like JP Finlay and Grant Paulsen get something right, it's not because of leaks - it's the blind squirrel finding an acorn thing...

I like Standig a lot but lol he missed on some stuff this FA, including disagreeing with Keim on their intentions at TE but I appreciate him trying.

So he's automatically wrong if he disagrees with you about the teams intent at TE? 🤭

Lol, I can feel the hostility creeping back in from you again.

Getting past that, what I think the team may or may not do isn't based on what I want them to do. I'm just discussing the rumors, the reporting, and how I interpret it. Whether I agree with the team's approach is a completely separate conversation.

But good jab even though you got me how it makes any sense.

Naa, I just saw the opportunity and I took it. 🤭

Everybody knows that if Keim says something you will proselytize for his cause no matter what he's talking about 😂

So I was just pointing out this fact while also giving you a hard time about it.

✌️

Them really digging Quinn big time as a coaching candidate.
I agree with you on a lot of stuff you say. Hard not to, because you tend to back up your claims with good, hard evidence. I try to do the same in general.

That said, this one - they were digging Quinn basically as their third option. I think it's fairly well established across a lot of credible sources and reporting that their number one choice was likely going to be Ben Johnson. Note I refuse to say they would have given him the job; he needed to interview face-to-face, and he declined to do so. So be it.

Their second choice was clearly Mike Macdonald, to the point that they offered him the job. Again, plenty of credible reporting and evidence on this one, this is known fact.

So it's definitely not the case that DQ was their top choice, and yes, I note you didn't say that. You are saying - I think - something Keim reported after those two candidates turned the Commanders down. Keim THEN started beating the drum on how much the team liked Quinn.

He wasn't really saying that BEFORE those guys were OUT on the Commanders though.

I think you and I share some of the analytical tendencies; meaning, we like to deal with observables and sort of keep track of who is right/wrong, and give us some kind of credibility score for our sources which informs our trust. Well, for Keim, he's got great trust, no doubt. However, in this particular case, I do think he was trumpeting the team's PR story that they wanted out there. He didn't say much that I recall about how DQ was their third option or anything remotely close. He left that to us to see and understand, and for many fans, it won't really be the case I think. They may very well focus a lot on the reports (Commanders PR) on how much Peters and co. liked DQ, he was great, they really thought he'd be a great fit. You see, what I like about how Peters spins, he's careful to tell lots of at least arguable truths. Those are likely a lot of truths. The only thing missing is, DQ was very likely their third option.

DQ was definitely not their first choice.

Procrastination or just bad timing awarded this team DQ, but we were kind of close to a SB in year 1 despite a pathetic defense.

Actually I don't. It's purely with him about he's hearing about the team's leanings. That's it. We can all want this or that but its irrelevant if its not what the team is thinking. So if he says they like Chig and will chase a TE as long as he fits them budget wise. I beliieve him. If he says they like Daniels over Maye in the draft I believe him. That's it. As Cooley liked to joke he's almost never wrong because he waits to hear it from 7 sources.

As to Keim's opinions as what he thinks the team should do, I don't really care about them let alone proselytize for his "cause". For example, he wouldn't agree with me about my concern at WR. Ironically Standig would be much closer to my take on that than him.

It's cool although you are quoting my post, that didn't actually say Quinn was their top choice. I said they dug him big time. It wasn't just Keim on that but Sheehan and I recall another reporter, too. He was a serious contender from the jump and was later said it was close.

As for Quinn being their 3rd option. No way to know. But following the narratives that came out, I'd guess he was their 2nd in the end. It's known that they were ready to offer the job to McDonald. So we know he was ahead of Quinn.

As for Ben Johnson, I am guessing based on the narratives he started tops but ended up third. Supposedly he didn't interview well at least not in the minds of this brass. They were though going to interview him again and he bowed out.

In the mix of the brass who interviewed them, one said I think it was Sheehan but don't recall for sure that it was Peters who dug Quinn a lot among that brass.

As for Keim on this, I don't recall him ever ranking who they liked in what order. But Ben Johnson initially, McDonald, Quinn were the hot candidates. And his main thing was early on there was this idea that Ben Johnson was a lock, and he said that's not so. Sheehan sort of pushed it a bit more. Quinn sort of came into this with the rep as a retread, and both dudes but especially Sheehan said from what he's hearing, he's a very serious contender from the jump for this. But the early front runner was Ben Johnson, I recall that well, I kept pushing for Johnson and that NFLchick kept pushing back and wanted Bobby Slowik.

I'd guess 4th would be Raheem Morris who supposedly contacted them when Atlanta offered him the job to get a counter offer and the Washington brass wished him luck, instead.

I'm not sure I buy the narrative that the team was souring on Ben Johnson when he pulled his name. After all, if I remember it correctly, Peters and Harris were in the air flying to Detroit to meet with him when he pulled the plug. That was part of why it was so galling. Johnson waited 'til they were on the plane. It was just so unprofessional. If he was uninterested or if his interest changed he should have made it known sooner.

And yes, Kiem did throw up a lot of caution flags throughout the process, but you don't hop on a plane to talk to someone you are luke warm about. At least I wouldn't.

That was from Mike Garafalo if I recall who said he heard Johnson didn't interview well.

Now the thing was it was a zoom. I mentioned they were going to do a follow up one. But I don't think a follow up interview, considering if I recall they interviewed multiple candidates twice, preclude the idea that Ben didn't interview well in that zoom. If you like a candidate, especially with on paper pefect pedigree for this team, and don't love his zoom interview which was done in the mix of a playoff run for the Lions where perhaps he was harried, you'd give it another go.

If you go with Ben Johnson's camp theory, its not that Washington was unimpressed with Ben Johnson but it was the reverse that Ben was unimpressed with Washington's brass in the interview.

But no way to know.

Washington was also a big unknown at the time too. Ben Johnson might have figured he stick with Detroit one more year, put everything into getting that championship on the resume in order to get the red carpet laid out the following season.

I think originally in my post I leaned a bit too far to Ben Johnson, although I do think the story is probably a bit more complicated.

If you read and remember a lot, and sort it all out, these themes stood out the most from reliable sources:
- Ben Johnson was high for SOME of the search group
- Macdonald was higher for SOME
- only after Mike Macdonald said no, DQ was talked about as higher than others

The stark reality is DQ is guaranteed the team’s second choice. At this point, we are at the 99-100% that Macdonald turned down the team’s offer.

When Keim started talking the most about DQ was after the Macdonald situation played out, if I remember correctly.

Not exactly the commanders, but dumbass moron Jay finally has a stable job.

But nepo-baby Jay had to get big bros help to get a pay check.

Jon, for whatever his other faults, was awesome on TV and in the media.

Jay’s presence will obviously lower the intelligence, insight, wisdom, credibility, thoughtfulness and quality of the show.

But he is kindof funny sometimes.

Colt McCoy needs to be a guest on their show at least once. I'd love to hear a deep dive story about McCoy finding out out he was going to be the one to perform funeral rites for Gruden's Redskins career when they played the Patriots.

What I appreciate about Keim (which has been talked about by you before) is the fact the he is very careful with what he reports, he tends to ensure it is solid before reporting as fact. When he does throw out opinions he always prefaces it by saying it is only his opinion and based on what he has seen/heard which makes him believe it may occur. He doesn't throw crap against the wall.

I mean, Colt is Jay's son, so it would stay all in the family.

I don't plan to listen to a single second of that slop, but somebody tell me they do get McCoy on there, because that could be high entertainment...

He will also say he's wrong, or mention if information changed. I like that too. I think the biggest thing that throws people off about Keim is he's not interested in breaking stories -- and that's why he gets so many scoops. I deal with media in my business and I trust reporters with background info much more if they aren't into breaking stories first and ones of course that don't betray trust. That seems to be Keim's thing and part of the reason why I am sure he gets so much inside info.
