AD to Wizards; 2026 is the attempt

AD is so injury prone.

His defensive skill could be interesting paired with Young’s elite offense but suspect defense.

From CBS Sports:

Washington Wizards: D+

For years, Anthony Davis has been considered the ideal teammate for Trae Young. A defensive anchor to cover for him at the rim, and an all-time lob threat to work with him in pick-and-roll. Of course, we assumed this would happen with the Lakers or Hawks, not the Wizards, and that it would come when the two of them were held in a bit higher regard, not where they are now, a world in which Young was cap-dumped and Davis is injured and past his prime.

The basic concept of Washington trading for Young, in a vacuum, made some sense. The team had little veteran presence. Getting a traditional point guard to organize the offense made developmental sense for their young players, many of whom had struggled to grow on a Washington team built to tank. The Wizards have leaned fully into that tank since getting Young, as he hasn't suited up for Washington since his acquisition. Davis, recovering from a wrist injury, likely won't play for the Wizards anytime soon either.

But when he does play, he raises a lot of significant questions for Washington. How many shots and touches do the Wizards want to devote to older players rather than the young talent base they've spent the past few years drafting? More importantly, how much money are they willing to devote to two players the rest of the league seemed mostly ambivalent about acquiring? A month or so ago, the Wizards were primed to have more cap space than any team in the NBA this summer. That space, and the younger players and draft assets it could have brought, is now gone.

There has been a lot of noise about Davis wanting an extension on a new team. To put it plainly, it would be patently insane for Dallas to give him one. Davis is already owed almost $63 million in for the 2027-28 season through a player option. The 2028-29 season is when foundational Wizards youngsters Alex Sarr and Kyshawn George are set to start their likely rookie extensions. Davis should be off of the books by then. Will Young be? He's under contract through next season. The Wizards haven't extended him yet, and without knowing how he looks in Washington or who the Wizards draft in June, it's too early to say whether or not they should. But as we see with James Harden most deadlines, players of a certain caliber expect to be paid long term. Young and Davis are in that dangerous territory in which they were once good enough to expect that sort of treatment but lately haven't been.

This frankly reeks of ownership impatience. The Wizards have been among the NBA's worst teams for three years now, and prior to this rebuild, had a reputation as a team that never tanked -- at least intentionally. Washington still owes a top-eight protected first-round pick to the Knicks. They'll do what it takes to keep it. But the messaging here is clear: the Wizards expect to win next season. That's a dangerous position to be in when you're relying on Davis to stay healthy, Young to defend and a bunch of very young players to grow up fast.

I was shocked when I saw this, but the more I think about this, the better it seems.

Yes, Davis struggles with fitness, always has, probably always will. When he plays though, he is an elite talent. So, a team that hasn’t been able to find a truly elite talent since Wall left, now has two. Davis and Trae take up something like 65% of the cap, but with all the youngsters, the Wiz can fit them in.

I doubt that Trae will see the court this season, and the Brow may not either. 2026 draft is looking solid in the top half, so Wiz are going to want to protect that top 8 pick. Word around is that 2027 and ‘28 drafts will not be nearly as strong as this year’s, so grab another piece this season, then start trying to put out a team that can challenge for a playoff spot in years where the drafts won’t be as strong.

Seems a decent calculated gamble by the Wiz. They add two all stars at positions of need without giving up any of their core youngsters: Sarr, George, Coulibaly, Johnson, Carrington, and Riley. Davis likely will be in DC the following two seasons, as he has a player option for ‘27-‘28. If he does play, and play well, he could be a candidate for a trade deadline day deal that gets the Wiz more draft capital.

I see the trade as a bit of a gamble for the Wiz, but one that shouldn’t hurt them much if Davis doesn’t play much. Also, getting Hardy in the deal was nice. Should provide some instant offense off the bench. As I type this, Wizards are playing really well tonight, with a double digit lead over the Pistons nearing halftime.

Yikes, Wiz just beat the Pistons. I hope they don't translate that to needing to trade more youth for injured players. They are really trying to set up for 2026 and protect that first pick; a clear strategy. So, if they are "done" I guess now competitive Ls are what they want to see?

Hallelujah! The Wizards grab the #1 pick in this year’s draft!

AJ Dybantsa, welcome to the DMV!

If Trae and the Brow can stay relatively healthy next season, this team could easily jump into a playoff spot.

Dybansta has superstar potential written all over him. Starting 5 of him, Young, Davis, Sarr, and Coulibaly, with George, Bub, TJ, and Riley looks strong on paper. Add a couple mid range vets and this team could easily be around .500, if AJ hits the ground running.

I’m actually getting excited for the upcoming season!

I'm surprised there is not more buzz around this. The Wizards have been snakebit on the draft lottery for so many years - to finally get that #1. It has been 16 years since they had that pick and drafted John Wall. I have no idea who they will pick, who they could pick, or if there is any controversy surrounding who the #1 pick ought to be by the experts. But Wizards finally seem to have some mojo going. Nice to see.

What's even more amazing than the Wiz getting the first pick is that they seem to be landing the first pick in a year in which there is talent. This isn't a year where the first overall pick is Kwame Brown or even John Wall. People say D'byanza (sp) and Peterson are good enough to be All Star team-changing talents.

I've been a fair weather fan for years. They're the home team so I root for them, but I don't pay a lot of attention. I have kept feelers out though.

I'll get back on board with the Wiz once they start contending. I grew up watching Wes and Elvin. I lived through the fat lady singing with Dick Motta. Then came Magic, Larry, the Bad Boys, Showtime, and then Michael. The NBA was it during their glory years and then they changed the rules to where I don't recognize the game anymore.

AJ Dybantsa 6'9" small forward is the top player from what I've seen. He's a scoring machine with a so-so 3 pointer so most of his work will be between the free throw line and basket. He doesn't play great defense, but who does nowadays?

For me Dybantsa is a no brainer. He has potential to be THAT GUY. Think SGA only taller. If he realizes his potential, he is a lock 10 year all star. Peterson is a fine player, but not that level.

The only other thing I can see them doing is trade, if they can get an insane haul, which would give them multiple firsts for the next five years. They might do that because they have a lot of players similar to AJ, but I’d rather they trade one of them.

I will say all this talk about Wilson intrigues me. He sounds like the guy with the most upside potential. I keep hearing him compared to guys like Kevin Garnett.

If Dybantsa is THAT GUY, then IMO, they would be crazy to trade the pick.

Wilson is a very athletic, long guy, who can be really active, and should be a defensive monster early. Problem is, he can’t shoot very well. I like him as a prospect, but will need some development. Dybantsa already has a high level floor game on the offensive end, and with his size and athleticism, he could be a solid defender with the proper attitude.

As a true freshman, Dybantsa averaged over 25 a game in a very tough Big 12 conference. I think he’ll be pumping in 20+ a game in the NBA from day 1. He is so silky smooth, with a good array of moves to get himself to the rim, or to eat in the mid range. Three point shooting was mediocre, but he is a good shooter, so I believe it’s only a matter of time. This is the guy that can lead the Wizards back to the top of the league. Just think they may need a new coach to get there.

Yeah I was surprised as well. The Wiz have been in the lottery 25 times and only moved up 3 times before this week. What a change.

As for the team I watched a bit last year, after checking out years ago, and didn't see anyone on this team that I felt could develop into a real difference maker. Sarr and George are nice players but none of these guys appear to be capable of turning around the worst team in the league. Now they finally have that opportunity.

I want AJ big time, just grab the guy and you could have landed the player you have always needed. But this is a unique situation, the Jazz owner is infatuated with AJ and we could take advantage of that. Owners are not smart at player acquisition, they tend to use their heart or bottom line where the basketball guys are more rational but often get overruled.

Going into the season Peterson was seen as the top guy. But there are obvious risks. If he hits, and they can rape NO and still come out with the star player you can build around, well that has to be considered. But only because we are in such a great position with the owner of the Jazz.

From NBA.COM

Dybantsa is a no brainer.

AJ Dybantsa, 6-9, BYU freshman forward

The Wizards finally land their star. Dybantsa could become one of the NBA’s most unstoppable shot-creators. At 6-foot-9, he has a special blend of athletic tools the way he bends, shifts, and explodes with the ball in his hands. Dybantsa led the nation with 25.5 points per game while breaking Danny Ainge’s 48-year-old BYU freshman scoring record with a 43-point eruption. He gets to the rim at will, cooks in the midrange, draws fouls at a high rate, and displays point forward potential. In Washington, the pressure will be alleviated on him early in his career, now that he’s teammates with veteran point guard Trae Young and — assuming he doesn’t ask out — and All-Star-caliber big man in Anthony Davis.

The Wizards could even be quite competitive early on in Dybantsa’s career, especially if their existing young players get even better: Alex Sarr already looks like an effective two-way big, while guards and wings like Kyshawn George, Tre Johnson, Will Riley, and Bilal Coulibaly have all shown flashes at one time or another. But none of them projects to be a superstar like Dybantsa, whose upside will be determined by whether he can become a knockdown 3-point shooter, as well as a more impactful defender to take full advantage of his physical tools. But the native of Brockton, Mass., has a tremendously high floor with his scoring skill alone that gives the Wizards a face of the franchise to build around and the ceiling to be a future MVP.

Agree on Wiz being snakebit. Amazing really. Then consider too, NBA is talking about changing the lottery system now. Ok so NOW the Wizards get a pick, time to change the system? Haha, hilarious to me how date and timing can work out.

Dybantsa has poor D? Ugh, I really think with Trae they need better D options. Still, the level of talent you described can’t be overlooked. Solid analysis: better coaching would be the critical ingredient. Ted has not been good at ALL on that front.

Come on man, it is time!!
