The 2026 Free Agency Thread

I could not agree more with you burgold. The addition of two new inexperienced coordinators alone is a massive change that will impact everything this team does in 2026. Daniels will always give a decent team a puncher's chance at making the playoffs, but I think we should expect it to take a few seasons for this team to reach it's potential (and that's assuming Quinn and Peters survive the next couple of years.
And, I don’t think this is the case to be clear, but this season for Daniels is kind of a big deal. He has to show he can be healthy for the vast majority of the year.

A year we need to find success is a year we reset with inexperienced coaches.

I'd say that's a fair take. Two new coordinators, new playbooks, new schemes combined with a major turnover of players. All of this and coming off a 5 win season doesn't spell champion. It should be a build up year where we need to improve and reach the playoffs. That would the team a year two trajectory to take it to the house

I guess I am more optimistic than some. I think any outcome is possible with this team. Feels like a total wildcard but that includes going on a run.

I am big on QBs who play big when the lights are brightest -- and Washington has got that guy in Jayden.

I think the defensive roster is easily better than 2024. And if you add another strong piece, the offense is better, too.

New coordinators, etc might take time, sure. But there are a bunch of teams with that dynamic this season.

Coming from the dude who was afraid that Mr. T would kick Rocky's ass, said so last summer because I felt Rocky's lost his edge. i like Rocky's chances to regain his edge in the rematch. Hearing from Quinn among others that Jayden is uber determined to right the wrongs of 2025, makes me fired up about the season among other things.

I hate to break it to you, but the current Qb market excludes paying top market for WRs. JD is either a top QB or he isnt.

What high level WR, not drafted, did the Patriots, Chiefs, colts, packers, Seahawks, Steelers, anyone, sign?

Let's make a list of WRs of SB winners.

Seriously, what team, since the 2007 SB loser Patriots were a.WR, not even a WR2 from winning the Super Bowl

Ok. This is just not factually true. Tons of SB winning teams have had very high end receivers.

The Eagles had AJ Brown and Smith. Seattle just signed JSN to the biggest WR contract in history. I fail to see why the fact that they drafted him is relevant. They are a SB team with a super high end WR1, that they are paying that way.

Plenty of teams with franchise QB’s have franchise receivers. Joe Burrow. The Chiefs won a SB with Tyreek Hill. Dak always has weapons and puts up MVP caliber stats. The rams have weapons. Most of the QB’s in the top ten in yards do.

How has Mahommes looked lately without weapons?

You don’t think that Josh Allen might have won a SB if he’d had better weapons around him?

So, you can lean into Tom Brady as an example, but Peyton Manning always had weapons. Or lean into Mahommes and his two post Tyreek Super Bowls, when the Chiefs drafted their way into the top defense in the league. Do either of those teams look like us?

Also, Tom Brady wasn’t Tom Brady year 3.and we shouldn’t be asking Jayden to be Tom Brady in year three.

Also, I give up. I’m resigning myself to the fact that there are no big moves coming down the pipeline to upgrade our WR group and I’m just going to focus on who the Wizards are going to draft at #1 instead.

We named it 'Burgundy and Gold Obsession' because 'Lukewarm about the Burgundy and Gold' didn't have the same ring to it :)
Would you say it's....extreme?

What is this role reversal day?

And yeah, I think the playoffs are in play. That should be the minimum goal. I just don't know that all the pieces will click together fast enough to make it all the way to a Superbowl.

My optimistic side hopes for ten or 11 wins and at least one playoff victory. My lesser optimistic side sees 8-10 wins with a strong late season surge. My inner critic sees a collapse like we did with Shanny, Zorn, and Rivera which ends with us needing to fire everyone and reset. I honestly believe the last is the least likely, but boy the PTSD is strong to fight some mornings.

All that said, I want Peters to assemble the best squad he can for now and for the future. Now, is a Diggs move. The future could be Aiyuk? Really though, the future is just not trading assets for a receiver unless it is one who you think is starter worthy for 3-5 years like a BJT. I still like BJT for Payne even though I imagine the Jags wouldn't go for it.

Don't give up on the possibility of a big wide receiver. Anthony Mix is still out there waiting to be signed.

But IMO this is a distinctly stronger roster, not on offense
Shockingly, I am going to disagree. I know. Take a moment, if you need it. Another point I've been making, it absolutely is.

OL is better. Instead of tackles Coleman and Wylie, we have Tunsil and Conerly. 2024 starters are now back ups, although Coleman may start at LG. Gs are pretty much the same, unless Coleman really steps up. C is debatable. I think there's more depth too.
RBs are better. Bill is much more explosive than Robinson, White/Ford can replicate what Ekler gave us (700-ish total yards 4 TDs). In fact, I might be disappointed if that's all either did.
Unpopular, but WR are at least a wash, younger, healthier, deeper, more explosive. Other than McLaurin, they definitely have more upside than Zaccheus and the Browns. IMO, LMC and Lane offer a lot more than Zaccheus and Noah Brown do. That doesn't include Williams.
TE is a wash--I think we'd all be happy with 2024 Ertz production out of Konk 66/654/7.
Jayden is Jayden.

One thing you mentioned about Lane was what his strengths were coming out of college: hitches, screens, routes like that (correct me if I'm wrong, you're a far better scout than I am). Did we ever see him run those routes last year? Same with Sinnott--I don't think he was used properly, either. It's possible this was part of the parting of the ways with Kingsbury--and I wanted Kingsbury back.

lol, for me its no role reversal. I said last summer, I was concerned about their off season and general approach to the season and expected a setback, not to the extent of what happened but I didn't expect that level of injuries. But I also said even through the tough times of that season, I expect a bounce back this year.

I've complemented Peters off season -- FA and the draft and like a lot as to what he did for the defense. I don't like so far what he's done for the offense. And to those who say let Jayden elevate the WR corp, lol it drives me nuts. Not because I don't think he isn't capable of it. But because I want to do everything possible to make his life easier.

For me not celebrating Peters work at Wr this off season, has nothing to do with me thinking they will suck. I don't think they will suck. It's that I feel at the moment its incomplete. Do I think they can beat the Rams in the playoffs right now? Probably not. But its not impossible. But if Jayden had two legit proven WRs -- it would make him more dangerous and also protect them from the season falling apart.

Grant Paulsen for example is in the camp of let Jayden elevate the corp and they can go to war with it -- but even he acceded that if Terry gets hurt it all falls apart.

I don't want a scenario where if one guy gets hurt or declines it can unravel the season.

The question when it comes down to offensive weapons (assuming no additions and I imagine there will be an addition) is this

Can a team with a strong QB, good OL, good TEs, and good RBs be a dangerous team if the wide receiver room is below average.

This is my pull it out of my rump assessment of our rooms

QB A
TE B (Chig and Bates are good at what they do. I think Sinnott can at least serve as depth.)
RB B (Bill is a dangerous runner. Hopefully, he gets better at ball security and pass blocking. Allen, White, and Ford all can be positive contributors. I could see this group as a B+)
OL B+ (assuming Alegretti isn't an embarrassment at Center)
WR C- (Terry is still likely a very good receiver, Williams is an unknown, and the rest can play a role but are not inspiring. I'd love to see Lane and/or McCaffrey make a surprising leap.)

O line is better I agree than 2024. My mind was on the weapons.

I don't love Noah Brown but he was decent that season and actually played 11 games. Ekeler had a good season. Zaccheus had a good season. Crowder had his moments as a backup. Ertz had a good season. All of those guys are gone.

Are they younger now and that's good? Sure. Are they better than those versions of those players in 2024, my feeling is no but as I mentioned one WR away from yes. How many seasons has Chig had like Ertz that year? Zero. I like Rachaad White, but he was signed for peanuts for a reason, I don't think he's as good as Ekeler. We don't even know Ford makes the team let alone combines with White as two pass catching RBs.

Will Antonio be as good as Zaccheus from the jump or better? Maybe. But he's a rookie. We don't know.

Is 31 year old Terry as good as 29 year old Terry? I doubt it. Will see.

As far as Jaylin Lane and Sinnott both are complete wildcards, if I had to bet on one versus the other, I'd bet on Lane. But I am not really blown away by either ones future. I do like those players though -- Lane IMO could be the best PR in the league and I like Sinnott as a move blocker, but I don't see either ending up as marquee players but not busts either, but I'd love to be wrong. If I am going with a young player shocking the league from this team from the jump, it's Antonio Williams. But that's of course a guess. I don't know.

I think the main disconnect in our disagreement is its not that I can't see players emerging, and our most optimistic hopes playing out for all these guys. It's perfectly possible. It's also perfectly possible that it doesn't. And I don't like betting on things that way unless I felt this was a rebuild.

When listening to Sheehan and some other locals talk about why power rankers, Vegas, mock drafters are on the aggregate very down on this roster and part of that is they don't have name weapons like some of the bigger contenders. I disagree with the national pessimists on that. I think they can make due with what they have but making due IMO lowers the ceiling. Lowering the ceiling is the rub for me.

And I don't disagree with you that if all our fondest hopes and desires for these players can come true, it actually can be a good supporting cast. But lol, no way I'd go to Vegas and bet on it. And I don't like betting on it in a season that might be the last one on a rookie contract. If this was name that random season in the past, what the heck, lets see if Jaylin Lane emerges as a star. But in the shrinking window for a rookie contract where Jayden can go from 10 million on the cap to something like 65 million sooner than later. I don't want to fart around and take chances with this time frame.

But I don't find my take negative at all and its actually driven by a ton of optimism. To me there are different camps on this.

A. Most of power rankers, national media, mock draft community -- to a lesser extent Vegas. At best this is a mediocre team, but more likely a bad team. And yes in their minds the lack of weapons compared to other teams is part of their narrative why.

B. They can make due with what they have. It might not be great but let Jayden elevate the roster and feed off a better defense

C. Actually this supporting cast weapons are sneaky good or at least the potential is high enough to see it play out. Be patient with some of these players who have upside, and even if you don't see it like that, Aiyuk can save the day so why not trust it?

D. This team can make the SB, Peters did a good job overall, but why not finish it? Why not load up Jayden to help him look special -- he's the future, building Jayden by extension secures the future.

For me. I reject point A. I think point B is possible but I hate the mindset behind it. I think C is a hope and a little bit of a prayer -- not saying it can't happen but I am not betting my season on it. I solidly believe in point D.

I was going to average this into a 4 point grading scale and see where it put our overall GPA (equals 3.0) however I would make the point that since QB is by far the greatest part of the O it becomes bonus points. Adding those points in, I feel our overall GPA becomes a B+. Certainly enough to get you into the paloffs and possibly beyond. Especially if our D also stays in the B/B+ range. Biggest question is how does the coaching affect our grading. That plays just as big of a role as QB play.

Now question AP! He's doing it right, for once.

Try me, I'm in the Philippines, it's noon here

Are you just saying stuff to say stuff or what? Because it's pretty clear looking at some SB losers that WR was a weakspot.

  • 2005 Seahawks went to the SB because they had a dominant run game. 2 Hall of Fame O-Lineman, an All-Pro Fullback, and Shaun Alexander who broke a rushing TD record with 27.
    • But their WR's were a clear weakness
  • 2011 Patriots had some dynamite middle of the field threats Gronk, Aaron Hernandez, Wes Welker...but
    • They had no outside WR's, just a pair of old and about to retire Deion Branch and Chad Ochocinco. Both were beyond washed up at that point.
  • 2012 49ers, great run game, great defense, but only 1 WR in Michael Crabtree
    • They had to beg a retired Randy Moss to give it one last shot. Somehow his 400 yards were easily the best non-Crabtree production
  • 2015 Panthers, great run game, great defense
    • Receivers stunk
  • 2017 Patriots, classic Patriots offense with good Slot and TE production
    • But no outside WR's. Brandin Cooks was a no-show in the playoffs, they traded him just 2 months later
  • 2019 49ers
    • WR room was awful, rookie Deebo folded in the playoffs
  • 2020 Chiefs, Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce were dominant but...
    • They had no WR2, WR3, or even WR4. It was obviously an issue in the Super Bowl
  • 2023 49ers I know it seems loaded on paper but...
    • Deebo and Aiyuk have consistently pulled a Marvin Harrison in the playoffs, they fold under pressure. Catch Rate, Touchdown Rate, Yardage, YAC all fall off a cliff in all of their playoff appearances
  • 2024 Chiefs, they got mollywopped by the Eagles
    • Rookie Xavier Worthy led all WR on their team with 600 receiving yards for the season...they could have obviously used 2 more WR's here
  • 2025 Patriots
    • There is a reason they're shuffling the WR room around again and trading for AJ Brown.

There are some SB losers that had star talent at WR, like the 2021 Bengals, but their opponent had the best WR in the league that year too.

As far as weapons. They don't have a star RB, don't have a star TE, arguably don't have a star WR but its close. So potentially I can see the rooms being good. But its not like any of these guys are take over game types. But the larger point to me is this...

If they lose Chig, they don't have a proven pass catching TE backing him up.

If they lose Terry, what's to stop defenses doing what they last year, that is play man and blitz the hell out of Jayden. Jayden struggled against Dallas, Minny, Seattle with that recipe -- exception was that first drive against Minny with these obstacles.

My point is why risk that again?

I am really fired up about the new defense potential. Assuming they can get all the communications and feel for playing together early this should be an exciting attacking and disruptive defense

The offense I am hoping can be similar with a solid QB and OL

Yeah I am not in a hold your horses this stuff doesn't happen as to transformation of defenses in one year. It happens. That's the unit that can change fast for better or worse from season to season.

NE's 2024 defense sucked. they made many moves. Ended up with a new D coordionator during the season and it all turned around in one year. I like Daronte Jones. I like the scheme. I think they can be good.
And they in my mind fixed the D line with an all in approach, that I love, they left nothing to chance.

My angst lol is totally driven ironically by optimism. Give Jayden a legit Z for three reasons.

A. I want to give the young Qb every tool imaginable to be successful
B. I do think its the missing ingredient for this team to be competitive with the big boy talent teams like the Rams. They wouldn't be as talented but it would close enough of the gap to hopefully upset some teams in the playoffs
C. If you don't have a legit #2, its easier for the whole season to fall apart when you lose your #1.

If that makes me a whiner, hater whatever, cool, I don't care. :p I see myself the opposite of that. You seem with me on this.

Finish the Death Star, its close to complete, I am not interested in 2027 right now, they can win this now IMO.

I don't love Noah Brown but he was decent that season and actually played 11 games. Ekeler had a good season. Zaccheus had a good season. Crowder had his moments as a backup. Ertz had a good season. All of those guys are gone.
Noah Brown: 35/453/1
Olamide Zaccheus: 45/506/3
Jamison Crowder: 9/72/2 in 6 games...

I'll take the youth and upside over those JAGs.

Our biggest philosphical difference is you're focused on what they've done, I am more worried about what they will do. I am not expecting the world from Burks, LMC, Lane, or Sinnott--but I think they'll out-perform the 2024 receivers, as well as JAGs like Mooney or Austin.

I think they may have a star running back or one with the potential to be. We've disagreed about Bill in the past, but I stubbornly remember what he did to defenses before they realized they could entirely disrespect our receivers and tight ends and just stack the box on every play. I admit he has things to clean up, but even if he was an old rookie last year I still think he was a rookie and has a chance to improve. Moreover, even if he is largely the same (as a runner) he will appear to have improved if defenses can't play eight in the box on every play and if every run play isn't an unimaginative dive play.

I think Ertz was truly on his last legs in 2025. Even in 2024, when he was still good at finding holes in zones, he just physically couldn't do much else. Chig has the ability to test and threaten a D in a way Ertz can not. Ertz would catch a ball and fall down. He provided almost no threat of YAC. Chig has the ability to break off bigger plays even if he is not as savvy as Ertz. This will force more honest and diverse coverage which could ripple to help out the running game and other receivers.

It's not from what I can see the biggest philsophical difference. Not even a litte bit.

It's about how close this team is to competing for a SB and in turn what do I want to leave to chance on that front. That's it. I've explained enough why I think this is leaving it to chance and too much to my liking. You disagree. That's cool. ;)

I can take on every point you make here but they are all meaningless in the structure of my argument, so it would just take the conversation off course because they all have nothing to do with my overall point.

Debating the nuances of this team and other teams falling short in a spot, but what is the worst version of that in my mind -- takes it all off course. I don't want Noah Brown or Mooney or Dyami as a starting WR. Whichever one is the worst of the three doesn't get to the core of my point.
