The 2026 Free Agency Thread

Now, you can say the game we beat the Bears with the Hail Mary was equally flukey but at least in that game, we led for all but one series. It was the Bears who almost stole it back before we required our miracle.

By this logic, I’d like us to add another CB, and maybe even safety, so that injuries in the secondary don’t derail all of the defensive expenditures.
We have' to add depth before the season at corner. It's a paper thin group that might not be very good even at full strength. One injury and we'll be playing Robbie Chosen at corner or some comparable street free agent.

I'm guessing Peters will address this after the June 1 cuts or the waiver wire cuts after rosters are set. We are scary thin though. WR is bad, too, but at least we have some numbers. Not that we don't need another good player. We do. We've got Terry, a rookie, and hopes.

Not meant personally, or personally directed at you. We’re all friends here.
Wholly agree--all friendly debate...well, mostly...but comparing our roster now to defending Jamin Davis or Emmanuel Forbes is as unrealistically pessimistic as thinking Treylon Burks is going to give us 90/1100/10 is unrealistically optimistic.

Also, I think this roster is far better than the 2024 roster.

Free agency looks grim next year. Woof. Not a lot on this list worth saving our money and rolling it over for.
There are some very attractive 1-1 receiver options who won't see the light of day: Drake London, Pacua Nakua, Treylon Burks, George Pickens. But there's also Chris Olave, Tank Dell, Christian Watson among others that are more likely to be available, as well as 2nd TE options like Michael Mayer.

We also have several key free agents that will need to be addressed: Armstrong, Luvu; potentially Chiasson and White. We also have Daniels' 5th year option and extension looming.

Or he could have used the entire previous year to do something besides signing only Deebo (yes, he got Tunsil and Connerly. Sweet. But the acquisition of 2 linemen should not have blocked out the full offseason schedule for doing anythng else). But Rivera sucked 2 years before that, so that really limited AP's chances at landing a FA WR on a team that made it to the NFC championship game.

Here's the list of WRs signed in 2025, well the top 20 with Noah Brown being 20th in overall value. Cooper Kupp is probably the only guy I would have invested real money in

Is WR still a need? Yup.

Was there a wall to wall buffet of premium options available? Not so much.

The list of WRs that went in the draft after Conerly, but before Amos (meaning we 'could' have taken them at 29 were:

Jayden Higgins (34th overall) - Houston - 41 rec / 525yds / 6 tds
Luther Burden (39th overall) - Chicago - 47 rec / 652yds / 2 tds
Tre Harris (55th overall) - LA Chargers - 30 rec / 324yds / 1 td
Jack Bech (58th overall) - Las Vegas - 20 rec / 224yds / 0 td

A couple decent results there in Higgins / Burden, but again... would you trade a starting RT protecting your franchise QB for a wr that averages LESS THAN 4 catches, about 30 Yards, and a TD every 3rd game in year 1? Yes, i understand development, but a day 1 starting RT vs those stats is a swing and a hit. Again, the cupboard wasn't exactly stocked. We traded for Deebo and got:

4 years. 4 years of ineptitude that required Peters to overturn 60% of the roster, year one. That's a lot. Paton and Poles, who have "run circles around AP" took three years to have a winning record and make the playoffs. Peters accomplished more than Poles has in 4 years in year one. It took Paton 5 to match Peters' success in year one. People are crapping on Peters because he has done more in two years what other GMs have taken 3-4-5 years to not even match, while praising those same GM's efforts.
I don't understand your dual point approach of "Rivera crippled the team, it's going to take over 3 years to fix it" and "AP hit the lottery year 1 and that's it. The summit has been reached and the rest still haven't reached it yet. Stop looking at what they have done for other 2 years".

AP did a rockstar job at making the roster into a championship game team. But instead of using the abundance of cap space to continue patching the holes while healing the worst parts of the team, he left WR and edge unpatched. The team got burned very, very badly. Burns so bad that it damaged the franchise QB for trying to make up for the offense being unable to move without his own sacrifices, and the defense being unable to stop anything at all.

The offense is in the same situation as it was entering last season. The defense is not, and that's good. But the offense is not good enough. One injury to any of the 3 players whose job it is to go down the field and the offense will be crippled. Again. And when it's crippled, it will fall to Jayden to put himself at risk with wild scrambling to open up the field again. It should not come to that. There have been two seasons with significant cap space to try to fix it, by signing an actual player. Not just intending to get one and failing. Getting someone. ANYONE.

Rivera's awful franchise management did not make it impossible to use cap space. Empty cap space is perfect insurance. The team needed that insurance, but didn't use it. And the offense at this moment has made marginal improvements over the course of 2 years.

That is unacceptable to me. I want AP to prove me wrong and have all his draft picks work out in the same year when the team needs it most. But wanting things to work out is not going to fix anything if the shit hits the fan for the second year in a row.

I know it wasn't a wall-to-wall buffet. That's why what I have been asking for is so sad to me. I haven't been asking for a guaranteed hit when looking at it from hindsight. I am stating that the team should have tried any of those players rather than sitting on Chosen, Moore, and a Michael Gallup after a year of eating potato chips on his couch.

But the team didn't try. They got a gadget WR and a couch potato and called it job done. To try and fail is better than to not try at all.

Want me to pick a random name? Fine. I wish the team had signed Stefon Diggs last season. Or literally anyone else on that list. It would have been damn well better than Chosen and Moore, and probably still damn well better than Dyami Brown immediately after he's washed out from the Jaguars.

I never said any of that. I said Peters is getting dismissed for doing more in his first year than other GMs, who have routinely praised, only finally accomplished after years on the job

The offense is in the same situation as it was entering last season.
No it isn't. It's much deeper at RB, and more versatile, we have a younger, more athletic receiving TE, and a younger, healthier WR room, if uninspiring past McLaurin. It's the same formula Paton employed last year, FYI.

Rivera's awful franchise management did not make it impossible to use cap space. Empty cap space is perfect insurance. The team needed that insurance, but didn't use it. And the offense at this moment has made marginal improvements over the course of 2 years.
Again, a completely false statement. Every aspect of the offense is far better now than it was 2 years ago, except MAYBE receiver, but that's debatable.

so you're upset we didnt do more to overpay for players that didn't perform better than what we did get?

What did Paton do prior to last year? Shored up the defense, did very little to improve the offense. Re-signed Courtland Sutton, relied on unproven Marvin Mims and Troy Franklin. Signed Evan Engram and JK Dobbins. I'm sure I'm missing a move or two, but that's largely what they did. Boy, that approach sounds very familiar. No one killed Paton for "not bringing in enough weapons to support Nix" last year. They finally made a bold move for Waddle in in his sixth offseason.

Poles has done next to nothing to improve a wildly mediocre defense, at best, defense (23rd in PPG)--instead throwing resources to offensive weapons, but had to replace DJ Moore. Their pass rush was almost entirely 30-yr-old Montez Sweat, who's fine, but passed on Romello Height for a third TE. Maybe the TE turns into another weapon; maybe Height gets buried at this level by better OL. But that sure seems like Poles is ignoring glaring holes on his roster.

Likewise they won 11 games last year, and a playoff game...by setting an NFL record for 2:00 minute comebacks. The Broncos last year won all but 2 games by more than one score.

With even moderate health last year, we beat the Cowboys at least once, Broncos, Falcons, Bears, and the Dolphins, at least.

I praised Peters for going BPA versus need at some spots during the draft. So I can't hit Poles for also going BPA. i like Height. But IMO Sam Roush is likely the better player, monster size-throwback -- the dude can block with the best of them, big dude with good hands, good athlete, smart dude too -- has some of those Styles like intangibles -- great student at Stanford, computer science major. I would take him by a mile over Sinnott. And this isn't me with the benefit of hindsight -- this is me remembering college Sinnott versus Roush.

Their defense isn't hot but they are great at getting turnovers. Similar to this team in 2012. But yeah they prioritize weapons over defense. And lol that's OK with me.

Now we assume our defense will be rocking in 2026. I got some hope on that front, too. But its not a given. I was reading something from a national media dude, forgetting whom who dived into this and still thinks this defense will suck. I think it will be improved but I also thought Peters did really well at improving the secondary last year and clearly that didn't hold.

They are weak at CB, and Wr. The RB are ok no game changers

They will probably sign T. Diggs at CB. They will probably sign one of S. Diggs, T. Hill, and. B. Ayaik at Wr.

All past there prime. We are paying the price for the Rivera era draft. Not only did they not pick impact guys, most of them are not even on the team.

The Lattermore trade was a big mistake, other then that are GM has been ok, not great. We need another young impact playmaker.

In recent years you only got give or take 4-5 decent options in FA at WR. It's part of the reason why teams aren't foolish to expend high capital at receiver in the draft because the top guys don't hit the market anymore.

It's interesting to me that the premium spots on offense -- LT-WR have become really hard gets in FA. But for defense there tends to be enough players at premium spots -- CB and DE hitting the market regularly.

LB and safety there always seems to be plenty. TE isn't that easy in recent years as to FA.

I still think Bill can be a game changer. He's got the speed and cutting ability. I look back on this year's Super Bowl where both teams stacked the box. The running back who won MVP got so many one and two yard carries against that stacked box. For the most part, he did nothing. Going back to us, once teams realized they could stack the box and never get burned by Mariotta and our receivers, Bill's productivity declined. In fact, everyone lauded Bill's vision at the start of the year and then said he terrible vision in the second half of the season after eight man boxes became the norm. What that suggests is that if Chig, McLaurin, et al. earn even the normal amount of defensive respect, Bill will do much better and that speed, vision, and cutting ability will show again.

You don't think any of them could have been better than Robbie Chosen and Chris Moore? Not a single one of them? The WRs whose only value is that they could run routes. They couldn't have jumped over a bar buried that deep beneath the ground?

I also think Kliff was too enamored with RPOs and dive plays. When you have a player as fast as Bill who cuts well why we never ran any stretch plays or sweeps. It was just a misuse of talent.

AP Draft picks other than Daniels:
Newtown: Probably the one I am most down on, looks like a bust.
Sanristil: Very good first year; poor second year. Still lead the team in turnovers last year. Not lukewarm
Sinnott: Overdrafted, sure. But still misused in Kingsbury, I still have hope for him as a possession/red zone type 2nd TE/H-Back type...even if I am the only one
Coleman: Bounced around and injured early last year, took time to recover, still contributed well later in the season as a 6th. Still has an opportunity to take the LG position. Cannot say he's a bust
LMC: Potential All-Pro KR (3rd in the league in Yrds/KR), showed flashes as a receiver before he got hurt last year.
Magee: Slow to develop and now buried on the depth chart. I think he's a miss.
Hampton: Total miss, cut.
Javontae Jean-Baptiste: Decent rotational DE in the 7th round.

Conerly: An improving, long term RT. Definitely not lukewarm
Amos: Promising CB. Not lukewarm
Lane: Dynamic PR, promising receiver. Not lukewarm. Also, look at the options after him: there are maybe 4 picks who were as good or better in the subsequent 3 rounds.
Medrano: Special Teams, 6th rounders that's what you expect, really.
Bill Crosky Merritt: 7th round steal, a focal point of the offense this year. Definitely not Lukewarm

2026, I am not going to go through each one until they actually play a snap, but Warren Sharp identified them as the #1 team getting value on their picks.

I get we only won 5 games last year, and there are holes, JFC but people are acting like we have no talent, and we're actually relying on Jamin Davis, David Mayo, BSJ, and Emmanuel Forbes.

Interesting, I like the pick by pick work. Here are my takes

AP Draft picks other than Daniels:

Newton: Looks like just a guy right now, and considering it was an early 2nd, bad pick for the moment
Sanristil: Decent first year, not great, really struggled in the slot, was decent not great playing outside, but his opportunism is unique to a defense that doesn't do turnovers. Atrocious second year. Still lead the team in turnovers last year. Feels like a hot-cold corner, not a shutdown, but turnovers.
Sinnott: Good move blocker. As a receiver, I don't like what he has said about himself on that front or what I've heard about him. Don't love the rap that he's not the best seperator and by his own admission his thing isn't route running in the mode of Ertz. To me its drafting a fullback in the 2nd.
Coleman: Good pick. If all he ends up a swing tackle, good pick. I don't love Keim's rap on his poscasts that this team thinks he needs to be tougher, he doesn't like playing when he's banged up
McCaffrey: decent pick considering its at pick 100. Good blocker. Good special teams player. Decent #4 type WR.
Magee: Don't think he's a miss but disappointing considering how that FO seemed hyped about him. Feels like a backup LB. That pick is fine.
Hampton: Total miss, cut.
Javontae Jean-Baptiste: Decent rotational DE in the 7th round.

Conerly: An improving, long term RT. Jay Gruden thinks he sucks. It was interesting to hear Logan say on a podcast today that he was average to below average but you are betting on potential. I can ride that. I like the idea of taking a tackle in that draft.
Amos: Promising CB. Another player that Logan addressed in today's podcast. We are betting on potential. Below average PFF grade. Zero picks. Struggled to stay healthy even before his season ending injury. But I like the thought behind the pick. It likely works out. TBD.
Lane: Dynamic PR. Meh as a receiver. Disappointed in his hands. But wildcard as a WR similar to McCaffrey. And if all he does is be a good PR, considering its a late 4th rounder, solid pick.
Medrano: Special Teams, 6th rounders that's what you expect, really.
Bill Crosky Merritt: Good pick. I wanted him in that draft but some of our fans IMO overrate him -- he fumbles, poor pass protector, not a passing weapon. But good rotational RB. So good pick.

Styles -- freak athlete, intangibles through the roof, love the pick
A. Williams -- love the pick, last time I felt on an island before the draft on the draft thread about an early 3rd rounder it was Terry. I've been pushing this guy on and off for months. High floor. A rich man's Jamison Crowder with a higher ceiling than that.
J. Joseph -- raw boom bust prospect but I like the gamble especially at edge
K. Allen -- like the player, seemed a bid of an odd selection considering IMO they just dumped a similar player in Chris Rodriguez. But he brings a high floor power style running that was lacking post the Rodriguez release
Gulbin -- seems like an odd fit for a team going to a zone scheme -- power-gap style player who isn't much of an athlete
The QB I got no idea but lol some in the media hate the pick

100%

Premium WRs are not just walking the streets, which is why I push back a bit on the narrative that Peters is some how failing miserably at addressing the position. The options out there aren't exactly blowing me away with what 'could have' been. Nobody is saying that the position is set. It needs addressing, but what I don't want is to do is hinder ourselves long term for some sort of short term security. We have had so many needs, that you simply cannot address everything. Yes, it's his 3rd off-season, but he can only address things as options come available.

You don't think any of them could have been better than Robbie Chosen and Chris Moore? Not a single one of them? The WRs whose only value is that they could run routes. They couldn't have jumped over a bar buried that deep beneath the ground?

Robby Chosen and Chris Moore were not in the plans when those free agents above signed. It was:

Terry McLaurin
Deebo Samuel (trade)
Noah Brown
Jaylin Lane (2025 draft pick)
Luke McCaffrey (2024 draft pick - starting progressing in 2nd half of 2024)

Chris Moore was signed BACK to the PS on Aug 28 after getting released from his 'futures deal'
Robby Chosen didn't log a snap til October

These two were not signed during Free Agency to be part of the WR room. They were desperation signings.

During the off -season we signed some former starting, flyer type players.

KJ Osborne
Michael Gallup

As well as some shot in the dark guys:

Richard Cracraft
Michael Strachan
Braylon Sanders
Tay Martin
Kaz Allen (RB / WR hybrid)
Ja'Corey Brooks

The plan was also to have Ekeler (torn achillies in week 2) as a viable pass catcher out of the backfield, and Zach Ertz (50 rec / 500 yd / 6 TD) before he got hurt late in the year.

I'm sorry but to act like they were going through Free Agency with the idea that Chris Moore and Robbie Chosen were going to be part of the WR room is wrong. They had their hand forced to bring in guys off the street, and Moore had been in the system for a year at that point. Burks was an unexpected Free Agent, and Chosen had a history with Kingsbury from Arizona. I would imagine Kliff had a say in him being brought in as an emergency plan since they had worked together already.

I agree with the premise that there weren’t a ton of great options at WR in free agency—but I take that point in a very different direction.

Conn laid it out well: reading the tea leaves, they misplayed the WR market. They took swings on higher-end targets, those didn’t land, and while they were waiting, the next tier of options got scooped up. That’s not bad luck—that’s misplaying the FA game.

And yeah, I’m not pounding the table for guys like Rashid Shaheed or Jalen Nailor as exciting WR2 solutions. But if you told me the outcome was walking away with Van Jefferson and Dyami Brown as complementary pieces? I’d take that in a second over where they ended up. If the market is scarce factor that in your dealings IMO.

Same with the veteran tier, the previous seasson—Stefon Diggs, Davante Adams, even Keenan Allen. None of those moves are long-term home runs at this stage, but they’re still a clear upgrade over rolling into the season with an injured Noah Brown as your starting Z. That’s just raising the floor—and right now, the floor matters.

And if the argument is “we didn’t love the free agent class,” fine—then attack it in the draft. Use a first- or second-round pick at WR. Do it once if FA isn't going to be their bag at WR.

Look at the Chicago Bears—they relentlessly stack pass-catchers. WR, TE, over and over. Meanwhile, we’re celebrating a third-round receiver like it’s some big investment. For them, that’s a bonus pick. They took a WR in the third and a TE.

Their “extra gravy” moves at those positions are more aggressive than our primary strategy. And when you’re building around a young QB, that difference in approach can add up fast.

Or lets throw all of this out the window. And focus on it this way. There aren't too many teams that don't have a legit #2 WR. This team is one of the rare ones without one. So is three years asking for too much for Peters to land a measley #2? Some of the players you aren't high on, would still easily be a legit #2.

The plan was to come into the season with the starting WRs to look like:

Terry Mclaurin
Noah Brown
Deebo Samuel

They were supplemented by 2 young draft picks in Luke McCaffrey (showed promise toward the end of 2024) and a 2025 4th round draft choice in Jaylin Lane. This would be supplemented by Austin Ekeler, a very capable pass catching RB, and Zach Ertz (50 rec / 504yd / 4td) before he got hurt late in the year.

But that offensive group is exactly what made the plan go so poorly.

The entire offseason, the team's argument for not paying Terry was that he's getting old and with age, he's not going be the same player he once was. They doubled down on that by refusing to give in, and they could not have been more right about it.

Noah Brown was an injury prone WR who did what he did for more than half his career: He got injured.

Deebo was a good pick, I am okay with him. He was the only reliable receiver over the whole season.

Ertz was old, and unfortunately, he continued to age.

Ekler was awesome the year before, but again, getting old.

Relying on an injury prone WR to not get injured was a terrible choice. Relying on Ertz to not age, McLauren to not do what they spent the entire offseason arguing he would do, and no backup plan for a pass catching Ekler was also a bad choice. They should have forseen that any one of those 3 variables would turn out badly, and tried to patch the hole.

They have done better by replacing Ertz with Chig, but no backup plan behind him besides hoping that Sinnott won't be so awful this season. They replaced the RB room, excelllent. They replaced the only healthy reliable receiver that Deebo was. And that's it. If Terry goes down, the WR corps is down to a rookie and some players who hope they might be as good as the rookie. God forbid Chig is out for a few games.
