The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

Whether he wants weapons or not, Jayden influencing anything isn’t an option for me. Not how it should work.

Sounds like Love is clear #1….could we move up…don’t see getting to #3 being an option, the pick value drops a bit after that. Jump to #4 if he’s still available ?

Tate or Styles at #7, or trade back. Think I’m going back if we get an extra 2nd and 3rd or 4th.

I have no problems taking Love at 7 but no way am I trading up for an RB. As much as I want Love, I'm not trading up from 7 for him. That is too much draft capital for an RB.

Right, I wasn't clear. I was saying 7 + Payne wouldn't do it. I proposed what I thought they might accept, which I wouldn't offer.

Sure. Why not? I never said I wouldn't trade Payne for the right prospect.

What I've always pushed back on is the assumption starting back in October Payne was going to be released because of his cap hit because it would cost more to replace a player at his level than the savings and you are opening up a hole. And why would you do that? There's no logical reason to do that.

Trading him for a contributor? No issue. You are still opening a hole elsewhere, but in this scenario you get maybe the best player in the draft and a difference making on offense.

I'm totally good with that.

I must admit I thought about the idea of drafting 2 WRs or a WR and a receiving TE but I don't like the idea of having too many developmental players at one position. I still see most of the WR room as developing

I’d want at least one receiver that is fairly polished as a route runner. A TE I think matters less on that front having Okonkwo ahead of them.

Agreed on the route ruing based on some of the issues we heard of last year

Regarding TE I was thinking more in terms of the players labeled TE but are really large receivers like and hopefully good with contested catches

7- Washington Commanders: Caleb Downs/S/Ohio State

I’m contradicting myself, as just last week I reported the Commanders would not take Downs. But I also said they love Love, and others reported head coach Dan Quinn was in favor of Styles. I could very well see this pick being Downs’ teammate Carnell Tate or cornerback Mansoor Delane, but Downs is too good a value to pass up; he’s no ordinary safety, particularly because his coverage instincts, slot flexibility, and deep-field range allow him to function as a true defensive multiplier in Quinn’s coverage-rotation system rather than a traditional single-alignment safety.

I also think we are taking Downs, thats of course if Love is off the board, I went back and watched alot of tape on Downs even as far back as his Alabama days. I think after Love, Downs is the next best player in the draft. I would love the pick. It will be like having Jamal Adam's in his prime.

I think Styles gets taken over Downs - if it comes down to those two players at #7.
 
I'm giving AP the fully alloted amount of time on his contract because he inherited a s**t show of a franchise that had been neglected for 25+ years. I know he chose to take the job but I don't think he was fully aware of how bad it really was. I am less dedicated to DQ, but we will see.

Maybe its just me but it just seems that both Styles and Reese made alot of plays being unblocked in college, whereas Downs seemed to sniff out the plays almost like he knew what the play call was. It all makes sense that Downs is able to react so fast to plays especially when you hear coaches rave about his intelligence on the football field. I was screaming at the tv when we didn't draft Derwin James, I hope im not screaming again at the tv in a few hours.

I was screaming at my TV too as to Derwin James. Downs is a different type of player. Derwin is a freak. Downs is a great read-react player his super power is his brain. Love the player though -- stud.

But I wouldn't scream at my TV if they took Styles. Styles is a freak just like Derwin is. A leader just like Derwin is. He can stack and shed. Has great sideline to sideline range. Had 6 sacks the season before. Can run seanlessly with TEs.

Styles plays a different position than Derwin, although he once was a safety like him -- but ironically Styles is a good camp to being the LB version of Derwin IMO.

Right now Downs feels underwhelming to me. If he were the only one remaining off most big boards besides OL I'd be praying for a good trade back offer

To me it’s more about maximizing resources. How hard will it be to find a player of similar impact at a different position. For instance, it’s a struggle to find top edge players or OT’s and if you don’t take them high when you can, you might be out of luck.

WR’s don’t come available as free agents that often, but you can draft them later in the first or in the later rounds and still find good ones. Same with CB’s. In the 7 on 7 era, there are just a lot more of those smaller speedy guys that are also skilled.

Because this is one of the few years where the majority of the best are not at the premium positions and most don't feel like hardly any of them are blue chip anyways
